I'm not much into sports as a spectator, but I've had this long-standing belief that the US could easily become a football powerhouse if it chose to. The population, facillities, and most importantly money are all there. In fact, I've long believed that the US could easily dominate any sport it chooses to, for the same reason... the only variable factor in the equation is "interest level," but even then if you throw enough money at the problem I'm sure you could find enough players to assemble a strong team for international events

that is bullshit, cause you don't have the history and the experience of so many sports. Football is one of the ancient sports in the world. they even played it in the middle ages.
while you all ignore other sports than basketball, american football, icehockey(cause there is also hockey and that is a different sport) and baseball. While you have famous athletes in other sports you just ignore them, how many of you know lance armstrong while he is one of the top. You only care for sports of "AMERICA" while there is so many more to see. Money isn't going to solve that problem and being a football powerhouse isn't about how you play football, it's how your team have played football the last 10-20 years and how many fans you have.

Football, as it should be called thoughout the world because it is mainly played with the feet, is the beautiful game. It is such a great game because it is so simple. When you're walking down the street and you kick a tin can, you're playing football. That is the great thing about this sport, you can play it by yourself with just about anything, a tennis ball, a golf ball, a beach ball etc.
I have never seen another sport which has so much skill and passion as football. Nobody celebrates scoring a point, touchdown, basket, run etc as much as a footballer does scoring a goal.
I watched some footage of one of the U.S.A games in the 2002 World Cup and it showed a bar in Chicago packed full of football fans. When U.S.A scored they were going crazy like nothing i've ever seen before in America. You never know, one day it might be the national sport of America;)

:2 cents:

Yes and no. There's only so much you can do with money; you need to have the talent base to work with or the money's no good. The talent base will only happen when you have kids growing up playing soccer all the time. Right now, though, we push kids into football or basketball or baseball, or even hockey before we push them into soccer. I think that's changing, but it's changing slowly.

Believe me the USA will NEVER win a World Cup in my lifetime (I'm 23) or my children, or grandchildren.......It would be a disgrace to football if that ever happened, just like it was a disgrace that the WC went to the US in 94.

Why would it be a disgrace if the US won the WC? If the US actually got to a point where it coud field the best team in the world, what would be disgraceful about that?

The U.S have a great chance of winning a world cup. They should've got to the semi's in 2002 but were denied by the ref when one of the germans handled on the line. Football is one of the biggest growing sports in the U.S, so they're only going to get better and better. I can't see it happening in the next 16 years, but after that.......who knows!!!!!

Hockey is the best sport there is because it has everything anyone could ever want in a sport. Hockey has hits, goals, fights, speed, skill, heart, goaltending, emotion, etc. It's the best game to watch and is the best game and best of all, its Canadian!

Please people
it's ICEhockey, hockey is a sport played on an field much bigger than the icefield and more intens because you have to run constantly not iceskate and it's much less voilently.
so in the future say icehockey and not hockey

I agree with you 100% but I don't think its gonna happen in the near future. But is they are the best then they are the best.

Well, Belgium should've won against Brazil but the ref cancelled the first goal of belgium while it was totaly not offside.
there's no point nagging about that. I must say I admire the Irisch team for getting that far. Hope they do it again in 2006

I know it's not a legit competition so don't waste your time replying.

I can watch NFL and NBA if someone has it on.

It would be a disgrace because I don't respect the US as a football nation, for me its important that a football loving nation wins it, obviously I wish it was Argentina all the time....but it can't always be, so i would much rather a country wins it, that knows the meaning of it, and can appreciate the significance of winning a world cup.

Americans would never be able to understand the history and significance of such a triumph, and as for the "best team winning the world cup", the team that wins the world cup often ISN'T the consensus best team, for example we were the best team in 2002, but we did not win the world cup, our hated brothers from Brasil won it...and many Brasilians who don't want to be partizan will freely admit they knew going into the tournament that Argentina was the team they feared, and they celebrated our exit even more than their own triumph because they knew we would piss all over them.

If the US ever wins a world cup, i would love to see how many dubious decisions that went for them in the process, no doubt it would be a title orchestrated by that cunt Blatter and paid for by Nike!

In europe it might be correct to call it "ice hockey" ...but in Canada it's just called "hockey".

For example ...a Canadian television tradition is

"Hockey Night In Canada"

It's not called "Ice Hockey Night In Canada".

With all due respect Sutty, thats a load of bollox! I doubt there will ever be a World Cup again like the one in 2002 when all the big nations were either in a bad state, like Germany, underperform big time like Argentina and France, or be fucked in the ass by bent officials like Italy.

Even Brasil were in a poor state at the World Cup, and were able to keep their heads above water.

You will not see a team like South Korea ever make the Semis again, Turkey have been shown up for what they are by failing to even get past Latvia for Euro 2004, and USA benefited from a gutless effort from Portugal.

All these factors are unlikely to come up again, the 2002 WC was without doubt the worst i have seen so far in my lifetime, i hope to never see a tournament like that again, it was a massive massive disappointment not only from my own country's standpoint, but the competition as a whole was not good and was marred IMO by Italy and Spain really being fucked by the Refs big time, especially Italy, surely no team has ever had to face so many injustices?

Football isn't continuous play, soccer is, but the thing that makes football hard is when you do play, you give all your effort. Especially when you are a defensive back or a running back... damn. Also, a turnover in football can make a bigger impact than any other sport. I think what makes soccer so incredibly boring is that it is repetitive. If you record 20 minutes of a soccer game and replay it 5 times that is the same thing as any other soccer game.

Ok, in soccer, you throw it across the field if you're a goalie or kick it across the field, run around, or pass it, or steal it, slide, kick and score, run into someone, or bounce it off your chest or head. BORING.

Most of the time it is run around, run around, pass, run around, pass, steal, run around, pass, pass, miss the goal, throw it to a teammate, run around, pass, pass, pass, run around, :wtf: Basically player skills are based on reaction time, speed, agility, power and accuracy (kick), field awareness, thats it.

In football, you can pass, bullet, touch, shovel pass, run the ball, toss or hand-off, juke/spin, running back option, screen, you can catch the ball, reception or a interception, or swat the ball down, lateral it, break a tackle, evade a tackle, stiff arm someone, sack someone or cause a fumble, return a punt or kick, block, punt or kick the ball, block a punt/kick, probably a few more things.

Theres so much technique involved in football, the way you hold the ball, body control, your positioning and stance/posture, your backpedal, strafing, tackling wrap up, keeping your feet inbounds for a catch... I could go on and on but my hands hurt already. If you played football in high school or college you will know how many techniques and skills you will have to work on.

If soccer dominates the US I will kill myself. I ain't gonna let it happen. Football just requires more physical and mental ability and thats just half of it. Your technique is the other half. Plus it isnt the same thing over and over, I know I won't make any soccer fans love football but you can't deny what I just said. I'm done for today.

I've read alot of bullshit on this board in the past (most of it comes from one person), this however, has to go down as one of the most fucking ignorant ones ever made.

1. The guy that said Football is continuous play was taking about FOOTBALL, not the NFL.

2. You say a "turnover has the biggest impact than any other sport"?????????? (a) so what? (b) any game changing event in a match makes a big impact, only a damn fool would try to say one thing in one sport is any more or less important than something in another.

3. You're appraisal of Football was clearly the thoughts of someone who just doesn't understand the fucking game, THATS THE GAME, ITS A DIFFERENT GAME, IT HAS DIFFERENT LAWS/RULES......people who say things like you did, need to be put down, its like you don't even think before you type.

If you want to see someone pick the ball up and run with it, watch Rugby FFS. FOOTBALL IS PLAYED WITH THE FEET, GET IT? FOOT?

4. Technique? You think there is not much technique in football? Er..............yeah, if you are watching some spastics play the game. Any one on this board who knows even the slightest thing about Football, will just piss themselves at your ignorance of technique in Football....i'm not even gonna go through the millions of names that i could who have technique coming out of their arse, it would be wasted on you.

5. Like you I very much hope football never does well in America, cos there would be dumbasses like Mike Lupica and Bob Ryan pretending they know what they are talking about.

6. You don't need to make me love the NFL, cos I already like it. However, when I hear muppets like yourself talk about something you clearly have fuck all knowledge about it kind of pisses me off, and almost makes me want to say fuck off to any American i come across.

7. I can deny virtually all of what you said, and I just did.

8. You really destroy your own argument by spouting bullshit about a sport who know nothing about, it would have been better for you to simply point out the strengths of the NFL, instead of trying to run down something you don't like with a load of crap.

9. Someone stick a fork in him, cos he definetly is done now.

dude, Iceskating is not easy and it takes alot of leg strength if you want to be good. Not to mention hockey players are doing two sports at once. Ice Skating, and Hockey. so to say that Iceskating is easy your very wronge, I will give you my goalie skates and all my pads, and I want to see you skate and stop pucks from going in the net.
