New sniper rifle model for British Army
Wednesday, October 10, 2007

"The British Army is replacing almost all of its 3,000 sniper rifles with a new model that uses a different caliber round to allow better performance.

The current rifle, the 7.62mm L96A1 will be replaced with the new “Super Magnum” L118A1 model. While the rifles are very similar, the newer version has been modified so that it can use the 8.6mm Lapua Magnum caliber round. The new rifle is 50 inches in length, weighs 15 pounds (without a scope) and has a 27 inch barrel and a five round magazine.

The new model comes after British snipers in Iraq, and Afghanistan complained about the L96A1’s long range capability and how heavy the rounds were. The 8.6mm Lapua Magnum round has an effective range of about 1,500 meters which is nearly a 50 per cent improvement from the 7.62mm round which is used throughout NATO.

The 8.6mm round is not new to the ammunition field. It began being used in the early 1990s, and grew increasingly popular with police and military snipers. The success of Dutch snipers using the larger rifle and round in Afghanistan convinced British officials to make the switchover

The L118A1 Model and the 8.6mm Lapua Magnum are manufactured by Barrett Rifles."

I think we've discovered Trebus' deepest, darkest secret. He can't read. Me? I can't write.
I just start tapping on the keyboard and if something looks too big I hit the space bar.

That's cool, I guess. You have to be kind of a pussy to shoot a guy from a mile away, but I guess it's better than just dropping a bomb on him. I'd be more impressed if he killed the guy with his bare hands.

Actually, I'd be most impressed if he killed a bear with his bare hands instead.

eh, changed my mind.

It's a pretty nice shot. To be honest though shots getting to that distance probably involve more luck than skill. Even if a person could have theoretical perfect accuracy, which nobody does, even the best tuned up guns made don't have that consistent accuracy. Even the very slightest variation would be enough to miss a human sized target, and what a lot of people don't understand is with something around the caliber of that bullet in he normal weight for it at that range it probably still took 5-8 seconds for the bullet to arrive at the location. So if the target moves after the shot is fired it’s even that much harder. If there is any wind you might as well say a prayer.

You know, it's been said that if you have an infinite number of monkeys hammering away at an infinite number of typewriters one of them will eventually write Shakespeare. Is that how you operate? :)
