Last week i was online and my ps3 started acting weird, the screen froze & got distorted + it went completely black, i turned the system off from the back because the power button wasn't working.

After a few hours i turned it back on by pressing the power button, because it wouldn't turn on with the controller all my music & game data was still there, but after like 10mins the same shit happens every time. yesterday i deleted everything from the system but i still have this problem. this is the first time this happened is it a virus or corrupted data :dunno:

Btw i've had this ps3 for 3 years with no warranty

Never heard of that problem before. I think it would be safe to say your PS3 is fucked. Have you thought about getting a 360? I heard they're great.

My friend is on his 5th 360. They don't fare so well.

I've never heard of this problem, though but it does sound like your PS3 is shitting out on you. With no warranty, it's gonna suck. I'd take it to a game store to see if they can repair it or perhaps call Sony to see if they'd repair it, but I doubt they will and if they did I assume they'll charge ya due to no warranty

I recently had a problem with my PS3. The screen wouldn't come up at all, but I could see that it was running. :dunno: Eventually all it was, was just a bad hdmi cord. I bought a new one and now it works great.:2 cents:

the video cable problem has happened alot, try to change the cable and see

OT:you could save your data by removing your HDD and transfering it to your PC for the time being

I've never heard of this, although I've never had an 80GB, on 40 and 250.

The game store near my house is charging $115 but they are some shady mofos. so i called Sony and they charge $180 to repair, i rather wait & get the ps3 120.

Sounds like you've got a short, if I were a betting man, I'd lean towards a GPU short. Does it still run while the black screen is on, or does it just idle?

THE PS3 160gb is out and 320gb will be out on 15th so forget the 120gb one

also where are you from?

in except SCEA areas

the 320gb MOVE bundle will only be 349euros

Sorry, but I just don't know why people make a big deal out of how many gigs a PS3 has anymore.I bought the 120 slim model, and I also have a 160 gb external HD connected to it.If it really made a difference,I could always put my 1TB external to it,but I really don't have a reason to right now.

Also, with only 2 USB ports on all PS3s now,I've decided to use a 4 port USB hub to connect anything else that I need to.

I will say though,I'm my particular case,I payed a grand total of $75 for both external HDs because I got the 160 for free.So for under $100,you could get a 1TB and probably never have to worry about storage again.Too lazy right now to do the math to see if having that much storage will offset the cost from getting the 120 over the 160 or 320,but chances are,you wouldn't run out of memory by the time you are willing and ready to get a 1TB.

I checked today the screen didn't turn black, but it froze system was still running, and i could hear the sound of the keyboard when i moved the controller.

Shayd you think it's a GPU short?

Definitely a hardware issue here. I'm thinking it's one of two things:

1. Your A/V cables are shot.

2. You've got either a short somewhere, or you're overheating. Typically if the screen just freezes, it's GPU related, and since the system seems to still be working, it sounds a lot to me like the GPU is going. Has it been running hot lately or when you've experienced the problem?

it was no big deal

i was just letting him know that if you are going out to but you can get the a bigger model for the same price with the new SKU's

and the new models have the 40nm RSX which cinsume less power and the new process would lessen the problem if any were there

the current SKu's have all the same amount of USb ports so nothing there

It's been running extremely hot since the problem started.

The GPU is it expensive? i don't know about this stuff, but i think PS is charging too much.

The GPU itself isn't too expensive, but Sony will probably charge you about $150 if your console is out of warranty. If you're fairly confident in working with the hardware, you could do it yourself, for a total cost of around $60, and there are tutorials everywhere if you're unsure.

Knowing me i'll probably destroy the system, i found a store that will charge alot less than Sony.
