OK, it just seems to me someone has to say this...so here goes...
I've commented many times that just a year ago...in early 2006, board members were just starting to go over 100 rep points. Now, it's early 2007 and we have people over 10 million!!!
People used to have to work for rep...and it meant something (to me anyway). Now, we have people with just over 100 posts and over 500,000 in rep! Sorry...but rep just doesn't mean all that much any more.
I know this discussion has been had before, but hey...its a new year, and maybe time to renew the discussion.
Anyway...the individual threads for each 'Million' are getting cumbersome. Yeah, I suppose one million is cool, and 5 is ok, and 10 is impressive. But are we going to have individual congratulations threads for each and every million? Especially when people are seemingly getting a million more rep points every other day or so?
(And no...this is nothing personal against Jod. Jod is a good guy and someone I really like here on the board.)

However i like you remember that to get rep you had to post something worth posting and your rep score reflected what kind of member you were.
Even then there were rep whores though thats why not being able to rep the same person too often came into place.
The system has evolved into something else now something not to be taken too seriously and doesnt reflect anything anymore. Its a natural process for a living organism to change and evolve.
I do think the congrats thread is a bit old and lame now though as there is nothing of worth to congratulate about.
