WASHINGTON (AP) — Huge increases in deportations of people after they were arrested for breaking traffic or immigration laws or driving drunk helped the Obama administration set a record last year for the number of criminal immigrants forced to leave the country, documents show.

The U.S. deported nearly 393,000 people in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, half of whom were considered criminals. Of those, 27,635 had been arrested for drunken driving, more than double the 10,851 deported after drunken driving arrests in 2008, the last full year of the Bush administration, according to

Immigration and Customs Enforcement data provided to The Associated Press.
An additional 13,028 were deported last year after being arrested on less serious traffic law violations, nearly three times the 4,527 traffic offenders deported two years earlier, according to the data.

The spike in the numbers of people deported for traffic offenses as well as a 78 percent increase in people deported for immigration-related offenses renewed skepticism about the administration's claims that it is focusing on the most dangerous criminals.

The DREAM Act would allow certain illegal immigrants — those who were brought to the United States as children and who are now in college or the military — to gain legal status and qualify for citizenship. Senate Democratic leadership brought the bill up last year, but it failed to get enough votes to allow a floor vote. This year, there was a Senate hearing on a new version of the bill in June, but its future is doubtful.

The e-mail above claims that "the Obama administration has bypassed Congress and We the American People by enacting the DREAM Act via dictatorial Executive Orders" after the bill failed to pass. That's not true. National Archives records show that Obama has not issued any executive orders on immigration. Executive orders can be powerful tools and many carry the "force of law," although the next president can quickly undo them with another EO.

Although Obama didn't issue an executive order, the e-mail is correct that Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton issued a June 17 memo providing ICE agents and officials with "guidance on the exercise of prosecutorial discretion." The e-mail, however, distorts the purpose and meaning of the policy directive.

The memo said such discretion is necessary because the agency has "limited resources" and "must prioritize the use of its enforcement personnel." It gave guidelines for who should not be detained and deported, and it listed 19 factors to be considered, including if the person is in "pursuit of education" in the U.S. It also listed eight "classes of individuals that warrant particular care," including "individuals present in the United States since childhood." Instead, the memo said, the agency's priority should be deporting illegal immigrants who are "a clear risk to national security," "serious felons," "known gang members" and "individuals with an egregious record of immigration violations." Such policy directives can easily be undone simply by issuing a new policy directive.

The e-mail — which was written as part of a fundraising solicitation from the anti-immigration group Secure Borders Coalition — distorts other aspects of DREAM Act and Morton's memo:

Regarding the California "Dream Act" so dubbed but not what Obama has completely supported, I agree with the following on it;

Patrick McDonough, a Republican member of the Maryland House of Delegates who helped lead the petition drive for the repeal initiative there, said U.S. citizens who are struggling to pay for college should not have to compete with illegal immigrants for scarce financial resources.

I don't disagree with the per se amnesty part..However, I don't think Obama has favored the type of blanket amnesty as was done under Reagan and that's clear from the policies he has supported.

They've been talking about cutting back mail service for ages now. I remember discussions going back before Obama's presidency so it's not him. Honestly, it's about time that it just becomes privatized because lets face it, email is killing the snail mail star.

Postal packages are almost as expensive as fedex/UPS or other alternative shipping companies these days. If the govt would just get rid of the postal service, that would save tons of money as is.

Obama says will keep fighting for immigration reform

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama told Hispanic voters on Monday he would keep fighting to make the U.S. immigration system fairer and blamed Republicans for the impasse that has kept him from achieving reforms he promised.

Addressing the National Council of La Raza, the largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy group in the United States, the Democratic president said he and his party were committed to doing more to help aspiring Americans and their children.

"I will keep up this fight," he said, telling the cheering crowd he understood the "real pain and heartbreak" caused by deportations and the problems undocumented workers face.

"We have a system that separates families, and punishes innocent young people for their parents' actions by denying them the chance to earn an education or contribute to our economy or serve in our military," he said.

Immigration reform will be a key issue in the 2012 election for Hispanics, the largest and fastest-growing U.S. minority group. They backed Obama with a two-to-one margin in 2008 but have been disappointed by a lack of action by his White House.

With Republicans largely opposed to any amnesty or effort to make immigration easier and favoring tougher border controls and sanctions on employers, Obama tried to convince Hispanics he was still their best bet.

"The Democrats and your president are with you. Don't get confused about that. Remember who it is that we need to move in order to actually change the laws," he said.

Obama promised to have an immigration bill in Congress within his first year in office, but that did not materialize as he turned his attention to healthcare reform, an economic stimulus package and other issues.

In another disappointment, he failed last year to secure the Dream Act, which would have given a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children.

Some students who attended Monday's speech said they were unhappy that Obama sought to gloss over his lack of action on immigration reform, citing U.S. immigration and customs data that 1 million immigrants have been deported since he entered the White House.

"We are outraged at his trying to promote his election among Latinos while continuing to deport us at a time when there is no legislative solution to the immigration crisis," Felipe Matos, a student and advocate from Florida, said in a statement on behalf of the group Presente.org.

The Hispanic community was hard hit by the recession, with a jobless rate that remains above the national average. Obama voiced support for a recovery plan to have construction workers upgrade U.S. roads and airports and suggested an immigration overhaul that also affects rules for students and entrepreneurs may help spur economic recovery.

"One in six new small business owners are immigrants. These are job creators who came here to seek opportunity and now seek to share opportunity," he said.

Responding to Obama's remarks, Texas Republican Congressman Lamar Smith said any offer of amnesty to the undocumented would "further bury us in debt" by making illegal immigrants eligible for health, education and other benefits.

"Amnesty would prevent many Americans from getting jobs since millions of illegal immigrants will become eligible to work legally in the United States," said Smith, who chairs the House of Representatives' Judiciary Committee. "The president should enforce immigration laws, not give those who have broken them a free pass."

All I can say is if you're in the Southwest you had better be bilingual if you want any number of jobs down there. In fact any number of jobs throughout the country in the near future will be 'bilingual only'. Gotta love this country.

Obama got about 70% of the Hispanic vote and that's including poorer overall numbers among Castro hating Cubans(Florida) who tend to vote Gop as they stubbornly wish to continue this silly Cuban 'embargo'(Which hasn't worked for 50 years to dislodge Castro).
