NHL '09/'10 Season Thread

Anybody got any predictions for the awards?? I do.

Hart - Alexander Ovechkin will win his 3rd straight. Although I think Ryan Miller deserves it. Buffalo would be a lottery team without him.

Calder - Tyler Myers. Tavares and Duschene have gotten all the hype this season, but Tyler Myers is contributing big minutes as a rookie on a division leading Buffalo squad and putting up the points as well.

Vezina - Ryan Miller. Since he won't win the Hart, this will be the make up award. Bryzgalov could steal it from him though.

Norris - Duncan Keith/Drew Doughty. I can't decide between this guys, so as a Kings supporter, I'll go with Drew!!!

Jack Adams - Dave Tippett. Obviously. He will win the award. 100% guarantee.

I agree with you on all of those picks except I would give the Hart to Miller

Do you think he has a realistic chance of winning though? Goalies winning the Hart is like pitchers winning the MVP in MLB. They both have their own award (Vezina and Cy Young) and often get overlooked for their leagues respective MVP awards. Miller should win though.

Pens would have clinched a playoff spot with ATL losing in regulation. Unfortunately gonna have to wait since ATL only lost in OT. 1 point away...

Like you said , based on the fact that Buffalo would be no where near the playoffs if they didn't have Miller , I think that in itself makes him a prime candidate to win.

Tampa Bay 5, Boston 3

Niittymaki stops 47 of 50.

Great performance ! If only Niitty had been that good all season Tampa would be in the playoffs.

And the Toronto game, holy damn did Ondrej Pavelec keep Atlanta in that game! So many amazing saves it was hard to believe.

And five or six times Toronto beat him solidly, but hit the post. Toronto really deserved to win that game. A more reflective score would have been 5-1 Toronto.

I'll revise these when the season ends, but as of now:

Hart - Ryan Miller (prediction AND opinion). I know what you're saying when you question whether or not he has a legitimate chance and I look at your baseball analogy and completely agree (you know I'm almost as die hard a baseball fan as I am a hockey fan, we've had some nice back-and-forths on the baseball threads too), but the precedent is there (Jose Theodore with Montreal), so as long as it's justified, I think it should and will happen. Miller has his team going into the playoffs as a division winner and top three seed. That team would be one of the bottom-feeders without him. In fact, I would say that Ilya Bryzgalov is the runner-up for the Hart too, considering how good he's been for Phoenix and how well they're doing, for sure going in with home advantage, and maybe even the division, even #1 in the West is conceivable.

Calder - prediction - Tyler Myers. opinion - Jimmy Howard. Howard has been awesome since taking over for Osgood and has righted the Red Wings ship, especially in the last few games, which have been the most important of the season for Detroit, and have propelled them into the playoffs, and they aren't likely to drop out again.

Vezina - obviously Miller.

Norris - I would narrow it down to the same two guys you did for sure (Doughty and Keith), but I would have to give it to Duncan Keith. Slightly better numbers than Doughty across the board. More ice time per game, more points (although one fewer goal), more shots on goal, better +/-, but all just barely.

Jack Adams - Dave Tippett. This is in stone.

I wonder who'll win the Lady Byng and Frank J. Selke? Hmmmm...they should just rename those awards the Pavel Datsyuk awards.

And how about this? I've been advocating this for years: come out with a new award given to the player who leads the league in assists every season and name it the Wayne Gretzky Award. Anybody like? Like the Maurice Richard Trophy that came out in the late 90s for most goals in a season. Why not do the same with assists?

I can see Pavel winning the Selke over Kesler again. Don't think he's going to win the Lady Byng though. Martin St. Louis may take it back.

And the Gretzky award is a good idea.

Up until now its only been Crosby and Ovechkin in the race for most goals, but I'm starting to think Stamkos might take it and then end of the season.

I wouldn't bet on the Caps in the playoffs Plasma. I think they are easily the best team yes, but I'm willing to bet in old fashioned Caps style, they fall apart in the postseason.

Oddly enough, that can be said about every division leader (except Chicago... I guess).

I doubt that Phoenix will finish first in the West. Second, maybe, but first depends on Phoenix playing near perfect for the remaining nine games of the season; especially against their last game with the Blackhawks. Also, if San Jose gets their engines working again, I expect them to jump back up to the top.

But, I seriously doubt Detroit's potential in the playoffs. They are a spoiler for sure, but I wouldn't consider them a serious threat to any of the top teams, except for San Jose. I expect Phoenix with either draw Colorado or LA in the first round.

Detroit as a underdog would scare any team. The post season is different, you know that oh too well as NHL fan. Phoenix is new at this thing and LA is still up and coming.

GO WINGS!

The Cap's have it all! Hope they head deep in the playoffs!

How many games has Ovechkin missed and he's still tied for first? They should rename the award the Alexander Ovechkin award for the next ten years.
