NHL '09/'10 Season Thread

i agree. the whole team is just...bad. there's no reason evident. they just aren't playing (well)

Last night they won 6-3... All the best players on the team contributed ( Martin ST.Louis 1 goal , 2 helpers , Vincent Lecavalier 2 assists , Stamkos 2 goals , Tanguay 2 assists ) Now I know that it was against the Saint Louis Blues but I think this is a good example of what the Tampa Bay Lightning could do if all their good players showed up every night : A team that can score a lot of goals. It's totally unexplainable to me why they are one of the lowest scoring teams in the league with all the firepower they have. They should score a minimum of 3-4 goals a game with the talent they have on ofense.

yeah, that was a good one. but the big question is, was it a once in every few games sort of thing or can they stop this unnecessary slide once and for all?

Fuck, how is Phoenix down 3-1 against Anaheim?

Next game is against the Islanders , I hope they use that opportunity to have a 2 game winning streak before that long homestand they have at the end of december.

Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker!
Good showing by the Blackhawks against their rival Red Wings tonight; what a way to "commit to the Indian" by posting a shutout.

and Brodeur makes history with his 104th career shutout. congrats to him

Brodeur proved tonight that he is the only true candidate for the starting goaltender if Canada wants to win the gold at the Olympics.

I can't remember which article I read said it, but it summed it up perfectly: If they want to go with youth, they'll go with Fleury. If they want to be popular, they'll go with Luongo. If they want to win gold, they will go with Brodeur.

What has Luongo really done to deserve a spot on Canada's roster? People say his name like he's a given to be on the team. Does anybody remember when Luongo filled in for Brodeur against the Czech Republic? He got the win, but didn't look good.

Fleury is the future face of Canadian goaltending. Cam Ward should be in before Luongo.

To Luongo's credit he has five more victories than the next closest Canadian goaltender, as well as a better save percentage than Fleury. I'll be the first Canucks fan to admit that Luongo's performance has been a little dissapointing, but given the fact that the Olympics are in Vancouver, I cannot see how he won't be on the team. With the way Cam Ward is playing recently (and the fact he just came back from injury), he has probably dropped off of Yzerman's radar completely. With things the way they are right now Brodeur, Luongo and Fleury are the top three Canadian goaltenders without question. The only goalies I could see slipping in at this point are Turco (unlikely), Roloson (unlikely), Chris Mason (Honestly, I could see it for some reason), or, god help us all, Price. Personally, the only other Canadian goalie I would look at right now is J.S. Giguere, considering it would be for the position of backup's backup and I've always thought Giguere was overlooked in 2006.

Well, Phoenix won, Philly made fools of Tampa, and St. Louis kept Calgary to a single point.

Can't complain.

Wow there are some good conferences in the league this year. Not too many teams with losing records. Someone on ESPN said that most likely 100 points is going to be what it takes to make the post season. Should a fun run, and damn, the olympics are coming up? My favorite sport in the world to watch is olympic hockey...it doesn't get any better.

This is apparently the US roster for Vancouver:

Goaltenders

Tim Thomas, Boston

Ryan Miller, Buffalo

Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles

Defensemen

Tom Gilbert, Edmonton

Tim Gleason, Carolina

Ron Hainsey, Atlanta

Erik Johnson, St. Louis

Jack Johnson, Los Angeles

Mike Komisarek, Toronto

Paul Martin, New Jersey

Brooks Orpik, Pittsburgh

Brian Rafalski, Detroit

Rob Scuderi, Los Angeles

Ryan Suter, Nashville

Ryan Whitney, Anaheim

Forwards

David Backes, St. Louis

David Booth, Florida

Dustin Brown, Los Angeles

Dustin Byfuglien, Chicago

Ryan Callahan, New York Rangers

Chris Drury, New York Rangers

Scott Gomez, Montreal

Patrick Kane, Chicago

Ryan Kesler, Vancouver

Phil Kessel, Boston

Jamie Langenbrunner, New Jersey

Ryan Malone, Tampa Bay

Mike Modano, Dallas

Kyle Okposo, New York Islanders

T.J. Oshie, St. Louis

Zach Parise, New Jersey

Joe Pavelski, San Jose

Bobby Ryan, Anaheim

Paul Stastny, Colorado

I'm not that comfortable with that lineup, but if they bust their asses it could happen. Not that i'd bet against the Canadiens, considering it's their home turf.

^ That looks like a decent lineup. I don't expect the United States to be a huge threat for the gold (Which I think is between Russia, Canada, or Sweden), but with the quality of some of those players - particularily Ryan Miller - the United States could be a solid threat for the bronze, and maybe even the silver. Along with the Czechs, I think the US will be one of the biggest wildcards in the Olympics. Hell, if Miller and Thomas are on their games, who knows what could happen. I'm sure the US will be itchin to avenge their loss to Canada on their home turf; if they come with their game faces on they could very well take us out.

Now that I glance at it again they are a formidable team. I like Malone, Kane, Byfuglien and Martin the best. Did you know Byfuglien couldn't play for one of the best high school teams in the state - Roseau. I can't imagine how damn good they would've been with him, considering they're in the state tournament damn near every year. One of the best high school teams in the country, but I suspect because he played juniors is why he is such a damn good player in the NHL. I wonder how they will break that lineup down.

Russia has released its Olympic roster, and it is one hell of a team.

Goaltenders:
Evgeni Nabokov
Ilya Bryzgalov
Semyon Varlamov

Defencemen:
Sergei Gonchar
Fedor Tyutin
Dmitry Kalinin
Denis Grebeshkov
Anton Volchenkov
Andrei Markov
Konstantin Korneyev
Ilya Nikulin

Forwards:
Alex Ovechkin
Ilya Kovalchuk
Evgeni Malkin
Maxim Afinogenov
Alexander Semin
Pavel Datsyuk
Alexei Morozov
Viktor Kozlov
Alexander Radulov
Danis Zaripov

The potential of this team is amazing. Imagine a first line of Datsyuk, Ovechkin and Malkin. Scary enough, but then the next line is Fedorov, Semin and Kovalchuk. I'd be shitting myself. They also have two top ten goaltenders in Nabokov and Bryzgalov. I'm starting to think Russia might be the team to beat this year.

Russia's defense is suspect.

I can't wait to see team USA at the next winter Olympics. That is going to be a good team. They're a little young and inexperienced to compete with the other powerhouses, but 4 years is a long time to improve. I'd even go as far to say they would be the favourites.

I don't know what's the deal with Okposo pick; I had to watch him for the last 5 or so years being stuck up where I am. Seeing his first season with the Islanders was pretty pathetic.

Those WCHA boys aren't nearly as good at adapting to the NHL as the Junior players are. Otherwise, they are a young team, which is good, considering our legends (Hull, Amonte, Roenick, etc.) are all gone now. Oh god, I can't wait for Vancouver! :hatsoff:
