My thoughts on God

He can't. Don't even give him a chance. No way. Absolutely no proof. Bottom line. If there was really a son of God like Jesus don't you think we would have history on that person??

Not too long ago I realized that god/religion were my excuse of not understand things. That's what science is for. To prove god IS pointless because athiesm is not pushing a claim that holds no proof onto others at the same time not controlling people and taking away free-thought. Which we all have but deny it. Dropping religion is good but doesn't excuse the idea of god which I think takes credit for you choices in life and your morality. Also it's not healthy nor safe to rely on something of no proof. Just saying.

This is exactly why religious people rely on phrases like...

"God's will be done"
"Everything happens for a reason"
"It's all part of God's plan"

...to defend God, when people start questioning why He allows us to suffer.

Don't forget " We can't understand god's works! " thats the fucking cover all phrase to try to shatter all reason.

The whole point of faith is to be able to believe in something without proof. Even I find this hard to swallow sometimes. I was just looking at this and wondering how to put a line through "sometimes" and substitute "most of the time" but then something will happen in my life that will make me rethink my stance on spirituality.

As a lapsed Catholic I don't really feel compelled to evangelize especially to the heathens at freeones but as Jesus said, "If you preach in my name and people don't believe, shake the dust from your feet and........" aw, forget it. I don't know shiat about the bible and hopefully will never get into a discussion with someone who actually does. For all I know Jesus farted rainbows and pissed Belgian Ale.

It is comforting to think that there is a God who loves us and wants us to be happy. That is supposed to be the essence of our existence, after all. People take for granted the simple things in life and latch onto whatever belief suits them at the time.

I used to see it all the time when I'd go to Holy Trinity church in Des Moines. Families would get into their Sunday best and cram into their cars, sit through an hour of church and mumble through the apostolic creed and the rest of the prayers by rote. They'd get the hell out of there as quickly as possible and would be less than holy the rest of the week. Judging people (I guess by this I mean judging my family) for what they didn't have or what designers they didn't wear and generally being assheads.

A few years ago I returned to Des Moines after an absence of about eight years and I went to my childhood church. I didn't know what to expect because some of the kids I grew up with had families of their own. I saw some of my elementary school teachers and talked with them about shared memories, like the time I fell off the jungle gym and had to be rushed to the hospital....but that is another story. One girl that lived up the street from us remembered my family and how my Mom instilled in her kids a reverence for the mass and how when the priest would prompt the congregation with "peace be with you" my family instead of droning back "and also with you" like a bunch of sheep, would almost shout it out. She said it impressed her that we weren't embarrassed and that she looked up to us for not shying away.

My Mom was part of the charismatic movement of the seventies, you see. And that entailed a lot of traditional types of worship that have been either watered down or forgotten since the church decided to modernize a bit after Vatican II. Being an active participant in the celebration of the mass was paramount to receiving grace.

To this day whenever I go to mass (which is pretty infrequently) I still get excited about the eucharist and the symbolism behind it. I get kind of selfish, to be honest. When the priest prepares the sacrament and says things like "take this, all of you.....blah, blah, blah." I'm not hearing, "take this all of you." Instead, I'm thinking "Take this, John"
because it then takes on a more personal significance to me.

I had a discussion about this with one of my drinking buddies, Fr. Tom C@$$@y (I did that to protect the innocent, btw). He said to me that if that is what draws you closer to God than who am I to condemn it, or words to that effect. We were drinking Irish car bombs at the time.

So here's my point, if I had one to begin with; if someone has a belief, even if (or especially if) you don't agree with it, let them have their happiness and don't hate on them. If someone says or does something regarding faith that you don't want to hear, either walk the other way or politely change the topic to something you find less offensive.

My own beliefs have changed over the years and I've never taken the bible as God's word in its entirety. Especially the writing of St. Paul. Don't ever get me started about that prick. After several years of working with a youth ministry I came to several conclusions about faith.

1. It is a personal affair.
2. I won't agree with the church on several key points.
3. There is a God.
4. I'm not him.

I still say the rosary almost every day and I will on occasion read through my bible. I try to be as good a person as I can and tolerate other beliefs (except Scientology) and that is what I expect in return. I respect a person's choice to not believe also. What they do with their soul is their own business.

I have no problem with people believing in something like a god, if it makes them happy and be a better person, fine. What I do have a problem with is religious people in government and how they try to force their views on those who don't believe what they do.

now that is a slippery slope; it needs to be parsed carefully. if there are, say, christians in the government, i sure as heck hope they're acting on their beliefs. to have stated beliefs and then set them aside while working as a politician doesn't show tolerance, it shows a lack of moral fortitude. I don't want someone so weak they are willing to compromise their beliefs.

So, I guess I don't want legislated religion, but people acting on their own religion while in office would be excellent - look at the lifestyle rules of christian, islam, and jew: don't steal, don't lie, don't bang interns. if all levels of government adhered to their own stated beliefs, we'd be in good shape.

 anyone still awake? i'm long-winded this morning.

Religion also comes with a lot of hypocrisy and intolerance.

Let's suppose there is a God. The point is, with the enormous amount of horrible things that happen in the world, why would anyone care whether there is a God? I mean, is God powerful enough to create a universe but not powerful or smart enough to make it so there are not a huge number of horrible things that happen? This seems hard to imagine and contradicts what people usually believe are the characteristics of God, i.e. omnipotence. If God really is not powerful enough to design a universe that has little to no suffering, I submit that God is hardly worth worshipping and should be treated as a matter of indifference.

Maybe we could say, "hey, thanks" but worship seems more sensibly directed towards a being who would have a much more positive resume of helpful intervention in our world then we can presently assume exists. If not helpful intervention, then an alternative design that would have led to more benevolent outcomes through the course of time. In other words, there is every reason to believe that if there is a God then it has abandoned us and doesn't care or that it is outright malevolent. To simply have faith that it cares is to confuse what care means. If I say there is a 3 year old little girl in Africa who has Aids and is malnourished and ask a believer in God why God let's this child suffer and die, and if they say they have faith that God cares, this is nonsensical since the definition of care is to help when you are able and willing. I don't think it makes sense to say you care about something and do nothing to help it. Like if I say i care about the War in Iraq and am against it, and then I basically do nothing to stop it, in what meaningful sense can I say I care other then in an abstract intellectual sense which means nothing for helping those who are suffering? I don't think we should throw around the word care if it is not tied to action. It allows people to get off too easily by saying, "oh, i care, but i do nothing."

Let's substitute myself for God. If I had the power and desire to help this little girl, and I did not help the little girl, someone could reasonably conclude I either don't really have the power or will. Because what other explanation would there be? That I am giving the little girl a test to see how well she can put up with suffering or see how much her parents can continue to believe in a caring god no matter how much the facts contradict that belief? If i did something like this, I would rightly be called cruel. If God does it, it somehow magically transforms into grounds for worship. If I deliberately starved my child and said I wanted to see if he continued to love me in his state of starvation, I would be considered some type of psychopath.

I could say a lot more, but that is all for now.

I agree god & religion is a load of bullshit , this is all I will say on this because I could be here all day picking the bones of religion , god , allah and whoever else if I could be bothered :angels:

But the whole concept of religion can be used to justify anything and within the political arena that is not a good thing. Remember when Bush said "God told him to invade Iraq"? Other than being a fairy stupid remark that makes him look like the first schizophrenic American president. It also allows him to justify his actions because a so called higher power told him to do so which takes us into a rather large grey area where all sorts of actions can be undertaken under the guise of religion and the belief that god is on their side with no other evidence other than the voice in their own head. That's a extreme example, but there are thousands more out there when you look for them.

If you allow someones religious beliefs to become intertwined with their political choices then there are all sorts of grey areas in which a choice could be justified on nothing more than faith. And if faith, instead or reason and the understanding of the facts is the major decision maker when it comes to a persons political choices then theres no telling what a person is capable of when they believe God is on their side.

If a person has a strong set of morals whether gained through religious practice or by other means then that can only be a good thing. But not when taken to the extreme and nor when they inhibit the decisions they need to make in regard to the people they serve.

I have to say i come to freeones for the porn, and tend to stay away from the politics, etc. Anyways, i liked JohnnyStyro's post alot. I've never really been much of a believer, even as a small child i had doubts about god, and heaven and all that....I actually used to freak myself out as a kid just thinking about it. But i digress, the truth is that some people really need this institution and our world is full of people who have no hope otherwise, people who need something more. There are so many people who don't understand the value of truth and existence, and the beauty of real life. they need to hope for something else, but I definitely think that religion is something that is necessary for some people, to give them the comfort of having someplace to go when they die. Atheism, to me says nothing about who we are as people though (imo), I would rather be called a Naturalist, I can agree on the truth, but it has to be through experimentation, verification, and new discoveries.

God is simply man's way of explaining his existence. From the ancient Greeks to modern day Christianity, that's been the entire purpose. Why? Because it's lonely as fuck to think that we're here for no reason. People want to see a deeper meaning in life.

I only read the first page; mainly skimmed through. However, I will supply some answers for you to read. I do not care how to you take it, if you will believe it or not, oh well. Question was asked I will answer.

Between the war in Heaven, when Michael and his angels fought Satan and his angels (1/3 of the angels that were in Heaven), well, Satan lost. He was and his angels were cast down to Earth. He is the prince of this Earth, along with his angels. What he wants to do is bring down as many of us as he can. "The thief [Satan] cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I [Jesus] am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." John 10:10

Adam and Eve lost Paradise by allowing Satan to trick them regarding the tree of knowledge. Thus the fall of man, kicked out of Paradise, and then mankind was ultimately in a world that Satan is the prince of. And we lost our Spirit. No longer whole. There is Body, Soul, and Spirit. Upon getting kicked out mankind, the fall of man, lost the Holy Spirit. Before Jesus came there the prophets and followers of God. Moses, King David, etc. by their faith, they saved many.

Jesus came and he gave his life so we may have eternal life. He went to his Father, God, and asked that we may be reborn again and given the Holy Spirit back. Upon confessing aloud Romans 10: 9-10: 9: "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10:For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."

God knows us more than we know ourselves. He knows whether we are righteous or not, what is in our minds, he loves us so much he gave his only son so we may have life once again. He definitely does not turn his back on us at all. We turn our back on him, but he will still not stop loving us, turn his back on us, or anything. It is if there are believers around and they are living and spreading his word, there is that hand of protection God supplies; if not, then Satan is going to go in and destroy it and be deceiving in the process where people will in fact say things such as "God allowed this to happen" and such. No he didn't. It is Satan.

This is but a snippet of it all! I know I am taking a huge leap sharing this on this board, but the question was asked, I answered. I answered according to King James Version of the bible. It is the closest translation to the original Hebrew (Old Testament) and Greek (New Testament).

God knows we will sin, and most likely every day until we die, but he will not hold it against us. He will not stop loving us for it. He knows what we will do and end up at long before we do it! It came with the package when Adam and Eve were kicked out of Paradise.
