MLS is The New No.3 Sports League in America

Far lower ticket prices attract more patrons, simple. College basketball tickets for below average D1 schools cost more than the average MLS ticket. Also, the average annual revenue for MLS teams is somewhere around $15m-$16m, whereas average annual revenue for an NBA team is over $100m. 3 average NBA teams do more in revenue annually than all 18 MLS teams combined. And remind me, what are the TV ratings like for any given MLS game?

Soccer...

All impressive stats, yet MLS still outdrew the NBA in attendance

Well, yeah. But that's due to the reasons listed in my above post, not to mention that the average price of an NBA ticket is more than twice as much as the average cost of an MLS ticket ($48/$22 respectively) and the fact that the average capacity of MLS used stadiums is more than 21,000, while there are only 2 NBA arenas that even have that many seats (NBA arenas average about 17,000). More seats and cheaper tickets by more than half, both contribute to this phenomenon. Not to mention that more than a 3rd (7 of 19) MLS teams play in cities where there aren't NBA teams.

I wonder how many people end up settling on going to Galaxy or C.D. Chivas USA games because they can't afford Laker tickets?

I am surprised to see baseball at number two..and remember, this comes from a fanatic of a baseball fan. I mean, a 162 game schedule lasts forever, it seems - to be able to pull in such a high average is rather impressive, me thinks.

This doesn't really surprise me. MLS has come a long way since it first began way back in 1996. They've added a number of expansion teams over the years and they have plans to add even more in the future. Teams are constructing fan friendly, soccer specific stadiums to enhance the game day atmosphere. Don't be surprised if in 10 or 15 years we'll be talking about MLS being the number two sports league in America.

I love soccer, but I just don't see it passing baseball in popularity. While the MLS is improving, it and US soccer in general have a long way to go before even being competitive on the global scale.

Stats can manipulated. It is nice to see the sport growing in popularity as far as the fan base and corporate sponsorships are concerned.

Like Dana White and the UFC, the MLS has been smart in its business model. Instead of assuming the fans will show up, it has given them reasons to.

Not if we don't keep our best players on this continent here. Also trying to fill stadiums the way they do in the EPL would never happen, as our expendable interest as far as athletics goes is pretty much depleted after the NFL, NBA and MLB. I only have so much time and energy to pay attention to the Major Four, and throwing into that the MLS is just overkill for me. It could happen though.

Nobody I know watches the MLS. It's like watching minor league baseball. If I want to watch soccer, I'll tune in to the EPL. Are MLS games even televised?

And let's be honest, at best the MLS is the 5th most popular sports league in America behind NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaas!!!

America is finally catching up. The MlS sucks compared to the other leagues but it is good to see that Americans are finally seeing what a great sport football is.

America and Canada are the only countries that don't like such a majestic and beautiful sport

blah blah....tell me the total attendance for MLS vs other sports. I guarantee you that it's somewhere behind the NBA, NHL, and probably Arena Football to boot.

Soccer doesn't suck, but it's a sucky spectator sport.

The MLS is growing but it will take time for it to come close to the Standards of the EPL or La Liga

I love Soccer (LIVVVERRPOOOLLLL, LIIIIVVVEEERRRRPOOOOLLLL!!) and its going to take the US team getting into the final of the world cup before it gets the national recognition it deserves!
