MLS is The New No.3 Sports League in America

LukeEl

I am a failure to the Korean side of my family
Major League Slots, how the fuck am I suppose to get excited by some retiree sitting in front of a slott machine for 2 hours straight, screw it I'd rather watch soccer.

Average attendance can be really misleading. They say nothing about paid attendance. How many of these spectators are comped as a promotion? MLS is also generally played at football stadiums with seating capacities of 50,000 or more, most NHL and NBA arenas are in the 25,000 to 30,000 range. Anyhow the point is that you make the numbers say anything that you want them to say.

Apparently Nascar wasn't considered, when it is, it ranks #2.

Oh, we're talking about actual sports. Sorry.

Nobody I know watches the MLS. It's like watching minor league baseball. If I want to watch soccer, I'll tune in to the EPL. Are MLS games even televised?

And let's be honest, at best the MLS is the 5th most popular sports league in America behind NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL.

Great point. I bet the English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, and the UEFA Champions League all draw better TV ratings than MLS. Soccer is absolutely growing in popularity, so much that it has surpassed hockey. But it's the foreign leagues and international play that draw interest. Not the second-rate MLS.

The article seems to be referring to attendance. So let's see-the lowest attendance at a NASCAR race was 29700, the highest attendance so far is 180000.

So if we are talking attendance as the benchmark, then MLS would be at best 4th.

The only football stadiums used by MLS teams are RFK Stadium, CenturyLink Field and Gillete Stadium and they tarp off the upper sections in these stadiums limiting capacity to under 30,000.

The problem I have with the MLS is, I know I'm not watching the worlds best players. The NHL and NBA have the worlds best players in their league. The MLS? Mhm.

The MLS has afew good players but most of them are past their prime. Keane, Beckham, Henry. It's where the great players of 5-10 years ago, go to retire while playing at a slower pace than at the top level. The MLS is on ESPN and ESPN America all the time here. I can never watch it though, as it is often on at 03:00,

Henry and Beckham probably only went there so they can retire in the sunshine with their millions. Beckham has such and easy life now.
He lives in L.A with his kids, he still plays the sport he loves

I wouldn't say that Henry is past his prime, although I haven't seen him play in a while.

Ace Bandage

The one and only.
The Indianapolis 500 draws 350,000 fans every year. Even if nobody attended the other eighteen IndyCar races, they'd still average about 18,500 fans per races. So average attendance figures for them have to be well over 20,000. I guess they're ahead of MLS too.

:D

Is somewhere outhere.
This must be a sad day for the US to see the MLS overtake the NBA.Although it might just
be the beginning in seeing this sport stay in this side of the Atlantic for a longer spell.

I hope there will be more teams added over the years, and of course for Canada and the US,it
gives the kids a better chance to get into the sport.Who knows but maybe in a few years it
will bring out some great players, but I think if the competition gets better then maybe the
MLS will become as big a league as some of the ones in Europe. If not, then maybe on the same
par as the South American leagues.

I think if I was playing soccer, then I would certenly want to have a spell playing in North
America with all the trimmings ;)

Beckham went to Hollywood and the Galaxy because they tossed him a little 250 million dollar contract, that's why.

Honestly though when we are talking about fans in pro sports, the European football fans put anything that this side of the pond has to offer to shame. NBA fans? Bleh. NHL fans? Not so much. NFL fans? Half of them are closet cases the way they dress up and shit every week and that same percentage never took a real snap in their lives. MLB fans are pretty good, but still have nothing on European football fans.

Being a football fan in Scotland is fun.

I love the huddle, that we celtic fans do. It is so much fun

It is one on the most fun things i have ever seen at a football game. Everyone is always so happy when we do it.

"Let's all do the huddle. Let's all do the huddle. Na na na na"

Football will always be the biggest sport on this side of the Atlantic. I don't think it will ever be as big in America as it is here

When you see riots during an event, you know the fans are into it.

How credible is that site, Will, when wrestling is not a sport. Even Vince McMahon will acknowledge that.
