Honda has built a specially prepared 3.5 liter engine that runs on methanol - not ethanol, as the current engines do. If the engine survives the durability tests and the IRL approves the exhibition, some more engines (three or four) will be built and they'll be used to try to break the lap record set by Luyendyk back in the mid 90's. This will NOT be for Indy 500 qualifying. It's an exhibition idea that Randy Bernard came up with to try to get some life back into the Indy 500 for its 100 year anniversary. Since it won't count for qualifying, to me this is just a sideshow gimmick. If they offer one of the engines to Danica (which they probably will), they should also put a picture of Fonzie jumping the shark on the sidepod of her car.
Since childhood, I'd been a HUGE fan of the Indy 500 and American open wheel formula car racing. But I haven't really watched the Indy 500 since the split. I did watch most of the 2000 race, when Montoya plastered the field. I'm still pissed at how this race (and this sport) has been denigrated. But in 2012 they'll (re)introduce turbo engines from different manufacturers and a variety of aero bodykits for the new Dallara spec tubs. So hopefully the bad taste of spec racing can be washed away then... and maybe I'll start watching Indy and American formula car racing again.
Til then... Monaco, baby!!! :nanner: Monaco, Spa and Le Mans are my favorite races to watch - and I never miss them! I'll be at the lake and will probably still be too hung over to watch it live, but we'll catch the DVR showing of Monaco later in the day. My girlfriend's nephew wants me to take him to the Coke 600 that evening, but I don't see that happening. Best hope for him is I might take him to the All Star race. I'm just not into NASCAR enough to deal with the Charlotte traffic and crowd.
