Harry Patch dies at 111

Not comparing one Artist's Art to another ,but Shakespeare's Plays (if you weren't so ignorant) was considered 'low' art during his lifetime. It is even believed by some that Shakespeare was only an alias for a Nobleman who wouldn't ruin his reputation with such garbage as Shakespearean style plays.
Not 100% true, the real praise of Shakespeare did begin after his death but his plays were not regarded as garbage by all of his contemporaries & the silly conspiracy theories that he didn't write them are just that, silly! Why would a nobleman consciously write garbage plays?!?
Anyone one thing is certain Shakespeare never fucked little boys!!!!!! :hatsoff:

Enough of this nonsense.
Harry Patch I salute you sir! An inspirational man! :hatsoff:

Guess you have cook outs on Memorial Day, you know that national holiday that each year we remember and honor our fallen soldiers. Or how about Veteren's Day bet you like be off school/work on that day as well. I don't see any national enterainers day or national poets day. I can assure you I will NEVER forget the 5 names listed below.

Thats not strictly true , we have a Rabbie Burns day kind of thing here in Scotland & hes a poet , where everyone eats Haggis , these are called Burns Suppers

http://en.wikipedia.org./wiki/Burns_Night

Sorry I am assuming that Girk1 is American. We don;t have any national holidays for poets or enterainers

Just a quick question.

What makes Harry Patch a Hero?

I can fight. I can fight for causes that I believe in. I have fought to protect loved ones, and personal possessions alike. I have fought over slights. Although I have never fired a gun in anger, I have caused injury. I have never fought for a cause that I didn't believe in. Never been persuaded to fight for reasons I was ignorant of.

What makes a soldier a hero, who's only real accomplishment is having been a soldier? I don't wish to slander, or belittle any one person, Mr. Patch included. Does fighting make you a hero? Does what you fight for make you a hero? If so, then I could be one. But whenever I fought, I always felt bad after, even when I came out on top. True, I never fought for my country. But I have fought for people I love, and isn't that the same thing?

I think it's more courageous to fight with any other means rather then violence. You can't kill a man with a well turned phrase, or a melody, but you can make lives better and inspire goodwill. This is a fighting of sorts. One that isn't meant to harm, but to raise awareness above the mellee and bring the perspectives home to what really matters. Which is life. Life, if at all possible.

I'm not going to touch on the "Mike fucked little boys argument." except to say there is more proof against this then there is for it. I will say, I appreciate his accomplishments just as much as any one soldier's. And respect each individually.

I'd like to bring this back to MY original point. For what reasons should we compare two dead men?

A real Hero (in the true sense of the word) and a Gentleman. RIP Sir :angels:

But you're the one who has missed the point. More over, I believe you have avoided the point- the ones that I have made- entirely.

Why do these actions overshadow other actions just as couragous? And in my opinion, more effective and most definately more compassionate?

One man can only do so much with one life, one gun, six bullets. He can take the life of six men as many times as he can reload, or die for six billion once. I'm not denouncing Harry Patch. He lived a long life and died an old man. At peace.

A hero to many people, myself included. But I think there are other accomplishments just as, and more so deserving of accolade. The kind meant to sew piece through peaceful action especially.

The accolade you speak of could not have been bestowed upon any other person, he was the last, he represented them all - it seems that's what you can't get your head round.

I understand this perfectly.

You seem to think I want to snatch it away from him.

When all I'm saying is why can't other feats of heroism measure up? Why IS the warrior the hero, and the humanitarian a footnote?

I can't state it any clearer than that, I think. And will stop trying.

So its better to revere child molesters including Jerry & I dont know about Elvis but I dont like him anyway than it is for someone who put his life on the line for your freedom & did it with dignity?

Also soldiers who fought in wars are remembered all the time , millions of people go to rememberence days & millions fly over to France for D-day to remember the people that died for me & you

So if your New American Values are what the world is going by , god help us all

We will see how many turn out for Michaels death in years from now

Who said it was 'better' to revere Artists over foot soldiers? It has been , IS & shall probaby always be a FACT that a single 'lowly' foot soldier/Private(like Patch) shall never get the praise that our beloved Artists do. A Fact.

That is not a modern cultural thing that you guys are making it out to be ,but a historical fact.:dunno: HAs always been that way & will be even more so that way as we become more averse to war.

It wasn't a Michael Jackson supporter ,but in fact it was YOU( & a few others)who decided to insert Jackson in this discussion when he was totally irrelevant to someone who wants to respect this old man's legacy.:dunno: YOU are the one who decided to trivialize Patch's accomplishments with your personal dislike against a dead man on a message board.
It's a battle you can't win against the most beloved human on the planet(despite his obvious faults) & definately one that is disrespecting the legacy of the man(Patch) that you claim to honor.:dunno:

And yes Presley married a 14 year old girl & it's hardly mentioned & Jerry Lee Lewis wouldn't have gotten as much flack had the 13 year old that the hick married was not his own 1st cousin:)eek:)

Those guys are PROVEN to be adult men who have heartily lusted after 13 year olds, but Jackson's accusers(only two of thousands he has helped) were laughed out of court. Still trying to figure out the double standard against Michael Jackson & I have a few theories.

Stay off the glue buddy!!!

You are the one thats turned this into a MJ thread , I was only pointing out that a paedo gets more replies from dying than someone who gave more with dignity than the self-obsessed Michael Jackson , then you come on spouting utter shite just to get your pathetic view across , now lets end this stupid MJ thing and leave the thread for people to leave there respects for Harry Patch...............

RIP Harry Patch :hatsoff:

And I was only pointing out that One(death of a single lowly foot soldier) & the most famous entertainer in the world have absolutely nothing to do with one another. Only an idiot like you would bother to compare them in this thread & even started another about the subject(Among the other nonsensical threads you've started I've noticed).

You suggested that bringing up MJ would get a more vigorous response to an otherwise ignored thread & it did.
You got what the hell you wanted so what's the problem.:dunno:

But the only pathetic view I see here is one even suggesting that a single grunt get more attention than a beloved Artist & the whining because it will never be so. Not much to dispute in what I'm saying.
:wave2:

In the trenches they were lions led by donkey's.

The officers there should have been the ones shot for incompetence, not the ones shooting men and boys for so-called desertion and the likes. Some of the actions commited by officers were a crime in it's self and a needless waste of life.

The most famous football match of all time happened in WWI. During Xmas in the trenches when all sides came out and had a game together before heading back to their dug outs. And the officers of both sides started charging the soldiers with offences afterwards. That's bullshit.

R.I.P Henry and Harry.
