Government Shuts Down As Congress Fails To Reach Spending Agreement

As long as their are avenues in place for legistative wrangling it is not hijacking . Hijacking is a crime and if they are commiting crimes then impeach them and convict. They are only doing what our legislative process allows for. This board huffs dong since dirk came back.

The repubs voted to negotiate a deal with the dems and Obama has refused to negotiate with those that are willing to try and work out a deal. Meanwhile he is more than willing to negotiate with Iran who kill their own people and fund terror against Americans. Fucking asshat.

Negotiate? No there is no negotiating on this. The ACA is the law of the land, we don't negotiate on laws. Let me propose a hypothetical to you. What if Obama decided to play the GOP's game and wanted to attach gun control legislation, which is supported by 90% of the American people, to the budget and said that he won't sign a bill that funds the government unless you pass gun control, what would be your response?

The Dems wouldn't do it. Not after this. They aren't that stupid (they're stupid, just not that stupid).

Even the GOP knows they've fucked up and that they're going to take the blame for all this bullshit. They've shot themselves in the foot, but they can't back down now because they'll lose face, and to them this isn't actually a job where the fate of the country hangs in the balance (because they don't give a shit about that) it's a game where the only thing that matters is leverage and which team is winning.

So was the DOMA the law of the land as is the Patriot Act. All laws that the left sought to change and would love to see changed. This law had no Republican support and the Repubs in congress have right to use any rule at their disposal to try and change this law. They are afterall the lawmakers so it is not like there is an armed gang of rogue ideologues holding Capitol Hill hostage at gunpoint. The Repubs survived the name calling and blame game once before and they will survive it again. This horrible law will be before the Supremes again before you know it and whether Obama gets his head out of his ass sooner rather than later the Repubs are going to continue to fight this tooth and nail until Obama caves.

Remind me to look you up the next time I am in Vegas because if you ever deal any Blackjack and have the habit of tipping your hole card like you do your next post it could be a profitable weekend for me indeed.

BC you guys just cannot stomach this law being a done deal. you are willing to hurt your already crumbling party even more over this which is great for everyone else but suicide for you. and considering that it's unlikely you'll be putting someone in the white house in the next few years and there will be democrat Supreme court appointees I wouldn't wager on this getting overturned. Roberts has already given his opinion. if he changes it, it will be all too obvious he was bought and paid for.

We'll see. The first test will be next November. Why are you bitching about it if we are shooting ourselves in the foot? First rule in politics is don't say anything if your adversary is commiting suicide. Looks like you are still talking to me. I'll worry when you shut up.

How was DOMA repealed? through the Supreme Court. What I'm saying is that if the GOP wants to defund the ACA, it's fine with me as that is what is afforded them under our constitution. But the way to do that is through the legislation process, the normal legislative process. As Bob Schieffer said today, “Isn’t there something wrong with saying we won’t fund the government unless I can attach my personal wish list? You can’t do that every time you get ready to fund the government, as somebody comes up with some new thing, that’s their thing that they want done, and you can’t fund the government unless you get that.”

Why are people bitching about it? How about because this has an effect on programs like Meals on Wheels. This is hurting people. That's a bad thing. Politics is not a fucking game and should not be treated that way.

Believe or not some people actually put the well being of people and country before scheming partisan bullshit.

What happened to you, man? Before Sam left you didn't act like this big a dumbass. Trying to fill a void now that he's gone?

The fragile peace I've had with all my real-world conservative friends shattered this week because the Tea Party shutdown has turned into a meltdown. Right-wingers know they've gone a step too far this time, it's really turned into something that's hard to witness.

You forget, GOP obviously does not care about meals on wheels as shown by the fact that they do not want the ACA. Helping people is not on their agenda. It is everyone for themselves and if you are unlucky enough to not have a job then tough shit.

I stand on the sidelines open mouthed that this is allowed to happen in what is supposed to be an advanced and civilised society.

The reactions are hysterical. You have one Republican saying that they got exactly what they want and are in high spirits, who stands around trying to downplay the effects. Then you have the next who whines about the shutdown and blames the Democrats (which is tough to do when you had Ted Cruz screaming at the top of his lungs threatening one...).

And this is after 42 unsuccessful votes to repeal the law. Which isn't exactly a fiscally conservative move...

Last year, CBS News calculated that the first 33 votes to repeal health care reform took up approximately 80 hours of floor time from the House, or roughly two weeks. The Congressional Research Service said it costs $24 million to run the House for a week, so the first 33 votes cost taxpayers approximately $48 million.

The numbers translate to approximately $1.45 million per vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act in the House of Representatives. Adding in the three votes since CBS News’ report last year plus Thursday’s planned vote would add $5.8 million to the total.

In other words, since 2011, the House of Representatives has spent approximately $53.8 million attempting to repeal health care reform. In addition, the Congressional Budget Office estimated last year that repeal would add $109 billion to deficits over the next decade, according to TalkingPointsMemo.com.

And of course that $53.8 million figure was six votes ago, so you can add another $8.7 million on for a grand total of $62.5 million... all for nothing but a show, since they've known full well that they couldn't repeal the law.

You forget, GOP obviously does not care about meals on wheels as shown by the fact that they do not want the ACA. Helping people is not on their agenda. It is everyone for themselves and if you are unlucky enough to not have a job then tough shit.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that the GOP is pro-Meals on Wheels, especially since a lot of the people they serve are not just elderly, but elderly veterans. They also don't want the NIH shutdown and kids to not have their cancer drugs. What we're looking at is the fallout from bomb-throwing idiots like Ted Cruz, who is now trying to blame the Democrats for his own ultimatum. The majority of the Republicans don't want this. Boner didn't want this (he can pronounce it Bayner all he wants, but Boehner will stop being Boner when he ceases to be such a dick). They can't cut and run though because they've started down this path and don't want to look like they're getting de-balled.

Greg Walden has already admitted, “Listen, we have to do this because of the Tea Party. If we don’t, these guys are going to get primaried and they are going to lose their primary.” That's it. Your average Republican knows this is dumb and didn't want any part of it. It's local politics playing out at the national level. It's all just pure bullshit.

So what Happy is saying is that Republicans should play well with others. Where was that attitude when Dems were ramming this garbage of a law through? The American people put the Repubs back in the majority in Congress just because of this law and I am willing to bet you 1000 dollars right now that they will still be in the majority after the mid terms. Wanna take that bet? I'll be here to pay up if I am wrong. How's that for shooting yourself in the foot?

Well BC how about I'm bitching because one side has become about beating the other side, instead of actually representing the people's best interest. it's like the guy who's lost everything and goes to vegas with his last $20 to rebuild his empire. it's desperate and pathetic. but even worse, it affects people's lives.

and the people didn't put the republicans back into power because of this law. get over yourself. the power shift happened with tons of money being spent on candidates and because of locations of the districts that were overtaken. the american people aren't that savvy. the republicans who are against this law didn't change their votes.

This law is going to be a clusterfuck. The Repubs want a one year delay . In the long term this law will hurt far more people than it helps. And in the process destroy 1/6 of our economy . Milano you are the economics expert who thinks the government should keep raising the minumum wage because it will boost the economy too aren't you? What is your latest amount you think it should be raised to?

Did they shut the government down while doing so?

No one is saying that they have to be happy about it. No one is saying that they can't try and appeal it (but, you know, might want to wait until there's a chance of that happening instead of wasting more time and tax payer money when it's a lost cause). There are proper channels for this, and what they're doing ain't it.

You're advocating stupidity. If this tactic gains validity, allowing the minority to dictate (which make no mistake, the Tea Partiers foisting this on everyone ARE the minority, even among Republicans) through threats and ultimatums, then you effectively make democracy non-functional. There will ALWAYS be pet issues. ALWAYS. Those shouldn't stop the government. The Dems shouldn't do it over pro-choice law, nor gun control, nor any of their bullshit and the GOP shouldn't do it either. This is idiocy and it ends in nothing but chaos and anarchy.

This is the kind of shit Sam would advocate. There was a time you were better than that, what exactly happened?

The American people put the Repubs back in the majority in Congress just because of this law and I am willing to bet you 1000 dollars right now that they will still be in the majority after the mid terms. Wanna take that bet? I'll be here to pay up if I am wrong. How's that for shooting yourself in the foot?

I don't gamble. Go ask Bob.

This isn't a garden variety pet issue this is a fundamental change to the way Americans live their lives. Better to resist now than to let something become a part of people's lives only to find out that it is a clusterfuck. Stop trying to play the role of mister compassionate when there are so many other ways that Democrats are hurting families taxes being number 1 on the list. That hurts familes far more than any shutdown ever could.
