For Halloween - Urban Legends and Ghost Stories From Your Home Town

Note: This thread isn't about wether or not you believe in ghosts, haunted houses, creatures (i.e... jersy devils, bigfoot) or anything else deemed "unexplainable" so please keep that in mind and don't flame accordingly :) However, feel free to express your opinions.

I think one of the side effects of living in a small town is, we often come up with strange ways of keeping ourselves entertained. The urban legend is a big part of that, as I'm sure you know if you grew up in a little speck like my Mathews County Va.

Old House Woods - Mathews Virginia
http://midnightsociety.blogspot.com/2008/03/old-house-woods.html

This was the most complete compilation of all the legends of OHW that I could find when running a google search. However, like all good urban legends, the telling varies from person to person. And if you were ever a young'un living here, odds are you have a personal ghost story or two about the Old House Woods you'd be more than happy to share. ;) (So me and my buddies got real drunk and decided it'd be alot of fun to...)

Still, the earliest sightings of ghosts in Old House woods were recorded more than 200 years ago, and have been reported steadily since. Some of them, like the legend of the storm lady, are pretty chilling.

So do you live near some "famously haunted" site, house, graveyard, woods or some other spooky place? Do old folks in your town talk about Jersy Devils or Witches or phantoms? Any good urban legends to tell?

I eat this stuff up. Halloween is my favorite time of year. Please, share anything.

Ive got one from Scotland

Hope you enjoy it

Repped. Thanks man. I'm only a few lines in, and I'm already hooked.

Alexander "Sawney" Bean(e) was the legendary head of a 48-member clan in 15th- or 16th-century Scotland, reportedly executed for the mass murder and cannibalisation of over 1,000 people.

You had me at cannibalisation. :1orglaugh

Its a good story & Ive been to that cave to have a look in it , I was driving by one day and decided to stop to see what it was like , it was nothing great tbh but it was a pain trying to get back up to the road , its right on the coast and a bit creepy the hills very steep and cliff like

I so want it to be true , these stories are better if theres a bit of truth in it

The original 'Devil's footprints' appeared after a light snowfall on February 8th, 1855, and travelled from Exmouth to Topsham in Devon - even crossing the estuary of the River Exe.
The tracks reportedly continued unbroken for 100 miles - appearing on both sides of 14-foot walls and locked gates.
Pretty fucking cool. 100 miles? You'd think the devil could afford a bus ticket, huh :) errr.. I guess, cairrage ride?

The narrative in the Hairy Hands one was the best part. And the picture at the end was priceless. Thanks man. Repped. :D

Blue Mist Road

Pittsburgh Ghost Hunters
The group has investigated many sites throughout Western Penn-sylvania, including Dixmont State Hospital in Sewickley, Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Hopewell Township and Frankfort Mineral Springs in Raccoon Creek State Park.

I have been to the mental hospital when I was in high School, at was already abandoned and creeeeeeey as shit. If funny in 2005 they demolished it and tried to bulid a Wal-mart, but ever time they got something accomplished on the Wal-mart, something would go worng. Wal-mart decided not to build and let the land return to nauture. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixmont_State_Hospital#Demolition_and_Wal-Mart

It's such a great story. And after reading the wiki you can really see how it inspired so many other great stories (like the Hills Have Eyes) Kinda Like Ed Gein. I'd love to see the cave. Wicked :)

Not quite on my doorstep, but not very far from where I am..

The tale of 'The Bishop of Barf-Fell'
1256903654.jpg

The White rock shown in the centre of the picture above, commemorates a rather macabre tale of the area when two centuries ago, a Bishop, after overindulging in the local hostelry, took on a wager to ride his horse up the mountain.
The inevitable happened and he fell, breaking his neck. (I don’t know what happened to the poor horse) The rock has been whitewashed ever since as a landmark.
I was always told as a kid, that the rock was actually the horse's head, which had been cut-off as it had fallen..
but as you can see it resembles, well, a rock :dunno:

Thank you sir. Growing up in Devon there were loads of myths & legends.
Me & my mates camped out on the moors once & got spooked by the silhouette of what looked like a gypsy dancing outside our tent! We were too scared to have a look!

& a friend of mine was doing some night fishing & felt like he was being watched, he turned to see what he described as a hairy pixie like creature staring at him! Whether what he saw was real or not it scared him shitless & he ran all the way home!

That would be awesome, man. And very much appreciated

Thanks Tunsty, Lech and Jason. Repped, all.

The stories behind the blue mist road are so killer. I want to go.

After reading about the patasola, I had to run an image search. Found some pretty cool stuff. Here are some of my favorites.

That is awesome. Especially the little freaky gremlin thing. I would have shit myself. :1orglaugh

Where to begin? There are loads of ghost stories in my local area.

I'll start with this one. Almost every month someone reports events like this over the local moors.

http://www.sheffieldontheinternet.co.uk/ghost.html

On a side note, the Derwent & Ladybower Reservoirs mentioned in the article are where the airforce practiced their runs for the famous second world war dambusters raids.

Texas Road, Amherstberg.

It's a long road, which ends in a dead end sign and a little bridge and path. If you follow that path, it winds through a forest and ends in a graveyard. People have "seen" a ghost like lady crossing the street and walkin right through cars; a man holding a lantern in the graveyard and nearby field; wolves howling; people talking to you from the forest; something banging on your car as you drive away, etc.

I wish I could tell you the origin of the horror of Texas Road, but I have no idea, and everybody has a different story about it.

A local director has actually made a movie based on it.

I haven't seen it, but I'm sure it's awesome ;)

I guess it is a spooky place. Cool place to go with your girlfriend, get scared and then go hold each other in bed.

That, I think, is a big part of why these things stick around :hatsoff:
(thanks man. Apparently I gotta spred the rep around, but I'll get you.)

In April 1995, retired postman Tony Ingle saw the sun blocked out by the shadow of a plane 40/60 feet overhead. He could see the propellors rotating but there was no sound. He saw it banking and then it seemed to go down over a hedge. When he ran to the field, it was empty. His dog, which he was taking for a walk at the time, now refuses to go into that field.

 Makes you wonder, though. Thanks for the read, Slay.

The fact the we have numerous baby toys in our house that light up and sing song and stuff like that is pretty creepy. We have a sing and play dog that went you touch it it sings songs and lights up. well last night when i put it away after my son went to bed, i made sure the power was off of it, about 3am its started to go fuckin nuts playing throus all the song s and all the lights going on. my dog was just sitting there barking and growing intently. I payed no mind to it and hit the off button on its leg, then I realized it was already turned off. My dog has NEVER barked at anything like that in the 9 months we had his toys. Needless to say I was pretty freaked out.
