They want a nice guy who keeps himself in shape and is at least trying to put together a stable, worthwhile career among other things. It's all about what you bring to the table. A lot of folks are nice but are doing little else with their lives. If a woman or man has a lot of options, they can be discerning.
Yeah.... but it's also traditional for the woman to be completely subservient and her role in society be relegated to nothing more than her husband's wife. Depending on the religious/cultural background of the families, there's all kinds of bullshit that can be passed off as tradition that seems outmoded in the enlightened 21st Century.
I don't think it's "ridiculous" for a woman not to want to give up her name just because THE MAN wants her to, if she's proud of the person that she has become under that name. I'd love to get married if I met the right person, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to change my name, so I completely understand why the lady might not want to, and shouldn't have to, just to satisfy hubby's need to brand her with the ownership stamp of "mah wahman." My attitude as the husband would be - I fell in love with "(woman's full name)" so if she wants to stay "(full name)" that's fine by me. I don't need her to take my surname to know we belong to each other.
When women are in their 20s and HOT - they won't give most "Nice Guys" the time of day. They want the "Bad Boy" so they can lead an exciting life and not be "held down" by their boring b/f or husband who has a normal job and makes a decent living.
It isn't until they get into their 30s, and when their looks start to decline and the Bad Boy has mistreated them, that they give the "Nice Guy" another look. NOW they realize maybe being with someone who will treat them right is better than the Bad Boy and also their baby-making time clock is sounding off louder than Big Ben. They now know if they want to get married the guy they ignored is now the only guy who will be interested in them so now they realize being with an accountant who will provide a stable and steady home life is something they want because if not this - they will never get married and never have kids and die alone and with 25 cats
I can name too many Playboy Playmates that fit this description "To a T!" with Karen McDougal being #1 on the list. The women who want to be ultra feminists - go right ahead just realize you better make lots of money because you are living the rest of your life alone!

All this nice guys can't blahblah seems bit bullshit. Are you guys sure it's not something else or maybe you are looking from wrong places? I'd consider myself that boring normal average guy -type that all women hate, but that hasn't stopped some very good looking women with all kind of personalities from liking me... Must be the rummors of my mammoth sized dick for sure... it was actually me who had to hold them back...
Add to that people that are more ruthless and cutthroat tend to me more successful than people that aren't because they are willing to do thing to get to that point nice people are not willing to do, and it can add to that factor. I can maybe see some for of selection bias that makes it look like women go for the jerks more in that it's not that women want to go for jerks, but they go for other things like strength, success, and wealth that just happen to have a higher portion of bad people among them.

I'm shocked that nobody has speculated on how this is a strictly Western issue. If you stay away from American, Canadian and Western European women, you are far less likely to have these problems. I say this from personal experience. Going after American women, or Americanized immigrants, I've gotten those vibes of elitist feminism and usually lose out to "douche bags" who are less attractive but more confident than I am.
Meanwhile, women from Latin America thank me when I open doors for them. The Russian lady gives me answers on a test even when I don't ask for them. The Filipino woman takes me out to lunch and tries to pay for my meal. The Ethiopian woman doesn't mind me looking at her cleavage. What has this to do with being a nice guy? We/they come in all shapes and colors. It never hurts to be nice. You may be fooled into thinking that nice gives you everything but it won't. If for anything, it will give you good karma.
For my 100 years here I will tell you that nice undoubtedly got me the most attention and finer looking women and the best attention from women. I'll put my looks at 6 and my women have always been 8s and 9s.
