dungeons and dragons (D&D) anyone?

I got a galaxy tab 2 7.0. It was on sale, probably because the next galaxy tab are coming out in a few months. I would have liked to gotten one with a bigger screen, but I can't really afford it at the moment.

I wanted the Galaxy tab, but this is what I could afford at the moment. Really, for what it's being used for, it's enough. Yea, I'd have liked a bigger screen too, but it's perfectly passable for my gaming stuff. In the next week or two it's going to get rooted so it can read USB sticks. Then I can access my pdfs as well. ;-)

I would like to take the opportunity to point out here that our last session I did not fuck up in any kind of way!

Well... except for one where I may have screwed over the entire group... but that wont come back and bite them until much later, I hope...

Do you have a keyboard that goes with it. Reading and looking things up in game is doable, but I think it would be hard to write notes in a middle of a session using just the touch screen.

I think another good thing about having a device like that is being able to use dice rolling apps. I would still use normal dice most of the time, but it wold give me the option of doing a silent dice roll without my players knowing I'm making one without having to go through the trouble of writing a bunch of them out before hand.

Look at it this way. At least when crap finally hits the fan you will probably just be getting back at them for all the times those other people's characters plotted against you. Then you can lie and say you planed it all along.

No, didn't get a keyboard with it. I'm not using it to take notes during the session. If I do, I still do that on my trusty paper pad and then jot it down later via the computer into Evernote.

I rarely make rolls myself, so I'm not using it for dice rolling either. When I do, I like making them squirm by how many dice i take out of the box. They know they're in deep crap if I'm rolling about 15 d10s.

Petra, were the folk there at Conception who sell larping weapons this year?

I think going for colour scheme is best attribute for my dice. I enjoyed 1st edition, 2nd edition and 4th edition.

I did get to play some Call of Cthulhu earlier at the end of last year, it was pretty good but unfortunately most our characters didn't really fit the adventure very well.

We are converting some of the rules now into Next (although I haven't had time to catch up and learn the playtest rules) better do soon because I am running a game this Friday.

yup, the larp booth was there again. They're there almost every year.

Loads of CoC was played as was SW and free form games. I was the only one running paranoia and there was 1 or 2 WoD games. Living Pathfinder had more tables than ever this year too. I think we raised about 13,5k pounds total this year.

Most of the people I have played with are good at not metagaming, but sometimes if they shouldn't know what the roll is for one of their abilities or even know a roll is going to be made it's nice to have it where they don't have to worry about doing it, even if it's only on a subconscious level. That's why I like it every so often.

My group is so so with meta gaming. Half are pretty good at not doing it, the other half are much better. I do let them meta game a bit if it cuts down the strategy session time a little bit.

i had to explain it once or twice to my new group what that meant. two of em were true gaming virgins.

now, they know that they don't know what a zombie is. how they might know, but their character doesn't.

im actually really proud of one of em. he looked up the history of his race (githyanki), and is now acting like a greedy money grubbing pirate, traps be damned.

good for him.

and he knows his natural enemies, mind flayers.

im waiting to unleash a few on his ass at some point.

I'm running my game tomorrow, so I am looking forward to it. Some people meta game, but I am pretty stern on it and will come right out of character and just tell them. Its a buzz kill but its working so far and they don't mind, any other suggestions on how to tell people not to meta game (generally the old tactic of "Yes but your character doesn't know that) works, but it often leads into various conversations which slowly drift off from actually playing.

Other versions of meta gaming people have got stuck with? There are a few, I just can't remember them at the moment as they don't happen too often.

Sometimes when the jokes and laughing goes on and on, its sort of distracting, anyone else agree. Sometimes it the same joke told by a different person. Maybe I just want the players to get stuck into the adventure and dungeons. Why am I complaining, I do this myself a lot ! *facepalm*

I myself might go easy on them with something like a zombie in my game, just because I would think in most fantasy gaming worlds a zombie is well known enough that even common people have heard a great deal about them and it would fit under general knowledge, just like they have probably heard about vampires and ghost. That doesn't mean they would automatically know any detailed information on them or their weaknesses. I could even see a situation where things like most incorporeal undead might just all be considered a "ghost" to unknowledgeable commoners and a lot of the rotting looking physical undead might just be "zombies" to them.

Something else I like to keep in mind, and can often be forgot about, is that the opposite of metagaming can happen also. While player's characters shouldn't know information their players only know there will be times where their characters will probably know something that the person playing them won't. They might be playing somebody more observant or smarter than the person playing them, for example and it would be unfair to not give out some things to the player because of that. Lets say, the characters are trying to figure out how to solve a puzzle (I usually don't like puzzles that the actual players and not the characters have to figure out, but that's another topic.) the person that's playing a super-genius character shouldn't be hindered because the actual player might not be good at solving puzzles.

I never write anything out these days.

The most that gets done for vampire is giving stats to my stable of NPCs since the players will probably be asking them for info. I like my NPCs rolling their knowledge rolls vs. me just giving the PCs the info.

For the rest? I know where the game ended last, what they should probably be doing that they won't bother to do, and the rest is pulled out of my ass during the session.

Although, last session they drove me to drinking. Literally.

im staring at a blank battlemap. game day is tomorrow when i wake up. i have a few paragraphs written out...

why is it that no matter long log i have, i never get this done in time?

too many variables in this next session, like your vampire, im sure. i cant predict their next move this time. i could go out on a limb, but we all know what happens when you do that.

For me, it just got to a point where I didn't want to take 8 hours planning a session. It stopped being fun and it was more of a job for me. I decided to not prepare anything and just wing a game. I mean, I knew the monster manual (if it was likely the players would run into a certain monster type, I had those bookmarked or written out on index cards), I knew the rules, I knew the world. Why the details that players just ignore anyways??

Even today if I'm going to try to lead them into a crypt crawl or a huge manor/mansion, I'll come up with a floor plan (wizards has a great 3.5 map archive I make use of). However, aside from that, half of the time I've no idea what they players find until they discover it. I think some of my best storytelling comes from where I pull things completely out of my ass.

Now, what I DO happen to do, is if I come up with something that I pulled out of my ass, I do write it down in my notes for next time. Otherwise I'll forget about my stroke of brilliance. Then I'll build a new town (loosely described in my notes), new NPCs, etc around it.

However, believe it or not, I do plan Paranoia since I use props. So I need to know with my Mission Alert is(the thing they never get directions to their mission briefing on), where the briefing room is, what the mission will be, what the actual mission is, and where the debriefing will take place. This usually takes up about a quarter of a sheet of paper and tons of thought goes into it. No, really, it does....

We are very proud of this. :)

Also... I have a feeling its somewhat tricky to plan for us.... things tend to not always go as intended.

You've no idea.

ALL you had to fucking do was knock on the gawd damned door....

As time went on I have went more to using modules and adventures and other things that have been written to use. I don't like winging it and I like having structure, but I also don't have the energy anymore to spend that kind of time and investment in creating my own people, places, and things like I used to. The days where I would write out my entire freaking homebrew campaign setting, or at least had a good idea of just about what everything was and did and it's entire history (which my players would never even know or use most of it.) is probably over or at least much reduced. Now I use pre-written adventures and mine the hell out of a lot of other material while adding a lot of my own things and changing the things I want that don't suit me.
