Debate thread.

i watched the debate on replay when i got home, the VP debate that is. and Sarah Palin i will admit did way better then what i thought she would. i was expected her to stumble around and make a clown of herself, ticket and party. but she did better then what i thought.

Joe Biden gets the win with me on this debate. he was crisp, fluid and answered all the questions professionally and directly. he did not resort back to areas he is more strong in like i felt Sarah Palin did. he also did not use wierd lingo that Sarah Palin did. "well ya know joe, dog gone it". with some of the questions she was asked she basicly just avoided them.

Joe Biden performed exceptionally and him and barack obama will get my vote come november 4th

the debate tonight? much too much reiteration and dodgeing. palin is beyond unqualified, and her record aside, her facial expressions told so. i say that only because so many are sooooo impressed by nothing more than a nice smile. which is why barack and his troupe don't have my support, either. my personal opinion is that a nonunion laborer should be president. maybe then we'd see some progress internally.

nobody has my vote. AGAIN.

and i know my statement is vague and offers nothing concrete, but i know that the more informed, intellectual of the bunch will understand what it is i'm trying to say.
i will not respond to any of the expected ignorant replies, so don't bother talking shit.

I'm biased, but I thought she did well. The discussion on the networks right now is almost universally "she exceeded expectations". Which is not to say that she necessarily won, only that most people were braced for the worst and saw something much better. The contrast will work to her favor, and may have even been planned all along. Overall, my opinion is that Biden won on policy points, Palin won on personality points, but neither one really bombed on either category.

I agree & can actually now see why she does well in debates & is successful in politics. The lady is a fucking wind up doll. Just fill her head full of the neo CON talking points on National Issues ,she obviously has little grasp of , & just let her go. She really didn't even bother to answer some of the moderators question nor was she challenged much by Biden when she didn't which was strategy I assumed. Not to Bully the woman.

Unfornately a moderator does not have the freedom(like an interviewer) to challenge her when she doesn't directly answer the queston & Biden only pressed her once. An interviewer who wanted answers would have ripped her to shreads(even the softball tossing Couric showed her the be the real empty suit in this race) & is obvious why she hasn't made the usual VP candidate rounds on the morning political shows like Meet The Press.

Just two(2) glaring examples of when she didn't answer the questions was the issue of Bankruptcy laws & the overall GOP/McCain's platform on deregulation. Anyone with a little confidence in public speaking & prepared speech/statements can 'debate' especially if there are no follow up questions:dunno:

Biden was the only candidate of the two whom showed a true grasp of the issues.

I found that Palin seemed a bit fascistic, and evaded answering many questions. She definitely knows how to play for the camera, but at times seemed very well coached. Her eye movements seemed a strange: she would look into straight into the camera then her eyes would dart down to her left and then immediately back into the camera which seems to be a pattern for liars. The above post's description of her as a wind up doll is pretty accurate to my feelings. At times I thought she was Tina Fey.

Joe Biden did not really seem to press her much on some of her gaffes. He was more gentle than expected to be, but that was probably also coached into himas well. Pretty boring, but he seems a bit more Presidential with more depth of understanding international politics.

Really kind of draw, but much better to watch than the Obama/McCain debate

I thought she was smooth and comfortable, practiced. She got in the term Maverick in about 6 times, and also "I'll have to correct you again", is an annoying condecending thing to say. But I think the focus was more on her cute appeal to the camera and questions were less focused than with Katie Couric

what I'd like to see is a candidate that really addresses the issues, lays down what their plan is for the nation and their policy and then follows through with it.

people talking shit to each other is what a freestyle rap face-off is, not a political process. it just seems really petty and childish to me. and call it pessimism or whatnot, but when you have a candidate that wins by shooting down everything their opponent says, that just means you have the less stupid person, not necessarily a person of real merit.

No. 1 Joe Biden knows more about McCain's policies and his voting record than Sarah Palin.

No. 2. It is a Joe Biden vs McCain debate. Joe Biden linked McCain in every sentence in the debate.

No. 3. Sarah Palin actually cramped all those political information in less than 5 weeks and unable to digest all of those and understand what they actually mean !!!

No. 4 The entire debate is about Joe Biden attacking McCain and Sarah Palin attacking Obama.

No. 5 Sure someone with many years in the Senate and is the Chairman of Senate Foreign Affairs Committee going through hearings everyday for the last 34 years will answer the questions directly with crispy, sound response.

But I can't wait to see SNL Saturday Night Live for the debate !!!! LOL !!

I got very tired of her cuteness, very fast. Several times she redirected the question back to the earlier issue of energy. She gets my vote for the more attractive candidate.

She also said Obama won't admit the surge worked. As Obama said and backed up by impartial information easily found in one of the many books or articles stating the truth about the circumstaces for invading Iraq, that the surge was in effect, just a bandage fix for all the damage the US did after the invasion. Had they not attacked Iraq, or had they handled it more intelligently all along, there would have been no reason to pump up the troop strength.

McCain has also stated he wants the troops to return victorious. That won't happen, just like it didn't happen in Vietnam, because the US should have stayed out of the literal business of France in Indochina in the 60's, just the same way the US should have stayed out of the business of Iraq in 2002.

I haven't watched it yet ,taped it.But from what I hear she had a very definate stategy of answering as she choose to even if that meant totally ignoring the question asked and that she even said thats what she was going to do.That meant she could avoid anything she was unsure of or did not wish to respond to.That made her look better I guess than the alternative but hopefully Is seen as a disingenuious way to participate in a debate.
And your right about the parallel to Vietnam IMO.The war which was a major issue in 1968 election dragged on for many many years after that with of course the reason given we must win or at least have "peace with honor".What we got was neitheir but we did get more than 1/2 of all the american deaths in the war being after 1968 and untold amount of death among the people in vietnam. As you mentioned earlier Bush while in vietnam said the lesson of vietnam for Iraq is "don't give up" he obviously has learned a different lesson then we think she be learned. The lesson form vietnam was that all the military might in the world can't change minds that are bound and determined to oppose you.We will leave Iraq eventually and I have a lot of doubt that it will be seen as something that we prevailed in later in history just as happened in Nam.

She made it clear early on that she was not going to answer questions in the way Biden or the moderator liked. At lease 4-5 times, she went back to a prior question to highlight her answer again. Actually she spoke non stop. Very long sentences without a pause or much inflection as you would expect from someone reading rehearsed material as quickly as possible, not even really pausing to breath.

When you watch it you'll see what I mean. I jotted down some notes

She also dismissed US policy in Iraq very quickly as "some blunders" but did not stay on subject to get into it, or the $3 Trillion Dollar blunder in costs and lives wasted. In claiming a change from Bush policy, she never, (nor did McCain), explain why the US shouldn't be in Iraq.

While several times mentioning reaching across the aisle, she never mentioned any democrats. I did hear the names, Rice, Reagan, Petraus, Romney and Giuliani however, in an attempt to associate herself with them.

I think there was also some reference to, "There you go again", which I find insulting and condescending in that it implies pathological behavior or an error foolishly repeated many times.

I felt kind of bad for the poor woman (Palin) having to defend McCain throughout most of the "Debate".
Oh well, at least Biden wasn't attacking her in particular.

I don't think that Palin gets the fact that in "awashington", the d's and the r's hate each others' guts. I suppose that that's the small town America in her, and to her credit, if she can garner an 80 % approval rating in Alaska.
:D

From what it sounded like, Palin probably asked Biden out for tea afterwards.
She's a nice, well meaning lady, I just can't figure out why in the he!! a woman like that would want to intermingle with the dysfunction of washington.
It's too bad that Washington opts for incessant conflict, while Alaska, apparently, takes better, more responsible care of themselves. *for the most part

Again, If Biden was running for the # 1 spot, I would feel at ease. I would know exactly what to expect, I feel secure that I understand the man's nature, I can't say the same for Obama, knowing the vastness of his radical associations.

,

Her approval rating in Alaska in now in the 60s.All these poor showings in interviews is hurting.I had heard that would be Bidens tact talk about McCain and not be seen as possibly picking on poor probably in over her head Sarah which would have made Joe look bad.

Interesting debate, as a Dem I thought Palin did surprisingly well.

My verdict right now is this on her. She is kinda a C student that did poorly on the last 2 tests (interviews), the teachers (McCains staff) took her aside and gave her some answers for the next test, she had many tutors to help with that as well to prep her. There were no gotcha questions or anything we did not expect in the debate.

I think another interview or next major speech with some unrehearsed Q&A will really decide her worth.

I mentioned this. It was seen by one commentator to be very selfish of McCain to take her out of her element or all the world to see in the hope adding a woman he could control would enhance his electability. I thought it showed terrible judgement on his part to pick her out of all the possibilities out there.

She also refered to Joe six pack I think it was. Kind of throws a whammy on potential voters watching Sunday football or a baseball game I thought, that she is bringing her level down to their level if you know what I mean.

Yeah, she's a sucker for interviewing with the people she does. When you enter that arena, you have to expect to be tripped ! You're sure not going to get compliments.

Where are the centrist, non partisan moderators ?
Flip a flippin coin or somethin' .

Didn't the lady moderator (Palin vs Biden) debate recently write a book about Obama ?
Conflict of Interest

I thought the mod was considered to be biased, but someone on CNN was talking about her as not. I thought Palin was let off the hook quite a lot. I would have interupted her to tell her to stay on topic everytime she went back to the subject she wanted to keep talking about.

Yes, she did write book about Obama. I did not feel she was biased, she put out a question and they debated it. A more neutral person would have made the Rep's more happy I bet.

The book is about black politicians and Obama is just a part of it.The book was no secret, announced a while back. The whole "controversy" was made up by the pubs in case Palin came out looking bad so they could blame the biased moderator. Now eveybody says Ifill(the moderator) did the same kind of non baised job she is known for.And I don't know Katie Couric is some kind of left winger but I guess that depends on what you think the middle is.Couric asked Biden and Palin identical questions, but only Palin was tripped.:1orglaugh
