Debate thread.

I thought Biden won easily. Greater knowledge of all events/issues, better presentation. TBH Palin is just a pretty face. She has no clue about anything, and kept harping on about energy-whatever the question posed.

I mean the nuke question, she didnt even answer it.

I'd feel bad for Palin except that I think it shows how shallow she is to think she was up for the nomination, but then again McCain might have pushed her into it. She has a lot of skeletons in the closet, and must be really stupid to have taken the bait.

I'd turn the damn job down, and think I have a lot more insight and vision than she does, so why in the world would I vote for someone so incredibly naive? I'm amazed at the overnight acceptance of her the Republicans showed, and now to back track and still defend that position as intelligent. Then again, they do the same thing with Bush, and the "War on Terror". Does anyone actually believe that anymore. I'm just glad I don't have a kid over there as cannon foddor to get blown up for the sake of Halliburton and Blackwater profits.

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
This was one of the most interesting "debates" (has anyone here ever been on a debating team? These aren't debates....they are more like ongoing 3 minute commercials) I have ever seen. Obviously, Palin was very well prepared and it was blatantly evident that she had been intensely coached. I thought, from a substantive viewpoint, Biden trounced her decisively. I also think her corny and constant theme of "hockey mom" and "joe six-pack"....winking at the camera and using folksy phrases like "you betcha"....is wearing thin. I also thought it was pretty ballsy to declare up front that she was not going to answer questions in the manner that was expected. She then proceeded to start spitting out catchphrases full of all sorts of buzzwords that were obviously designed to skirt around the question. Every time she finished an answer or rebutted, I found myself wondering what any of it had to do with the original question. I don't see independent women voters being drawn to her....and especially not Hillary supporters. She showed her true political colors when she stated that she would "tolerate" gays....I thought that was very telling. She's a serious arch-conservative and, in the final analysis, will appeal only to like-minded individuals who would be republican voters anyway (the infamous "base" of the party).

However, she is a very attractive woman and she has great charisma and I found myself very drawn to her. I can see the appeal but, as my wife said last night, "I don't want a hockey mom as president". She looks like someone who would be heading up the PTA or something.....just not enough substance there to be a credible candidate. She did a very good job under the circumstances but Biden clearly was the victor. He showed great passion and emotion but was very courteous to Palin without seeming patronizing. I thought his tact to go after McCain and tie him back to the Bush policies was dead-on.

The next debates between Obama and McCain should prove interesting but it would be hard for them to beat this one for entertainment value.

Excellent comment! This is the best McCain could come up with as an appeal for the female vote that didn't see Hillary get the nomination? Either you are die hard Bush despite reality, or well, let's say, no comment. McCain should have talked Carly Fiorina into it.

i'm just watchin the debate for the first time,
on more 4 here in the uk

she's just out of her depth

and pissing me off saying "naïveté" with a french
accent,
just like mccain did the other night,

what the fuck

and by the way,
does she sound a bit canadian :dunno: ?

she might fit in with the trailer park boys - i reckon
they'd like anyone called joe six-pack :D

The book is about black politicians and Obama is just a part of it.The book was no secret, announced a while back. The whole "controversy" was made up by the pubs in case Palin came out looking bad so they could blame the biased moderator. Now eveybody says Ifill(the moderator) did the same kind of non baised job she is known for.And I don't know Katie Couric is some kind of left winger but I guess that depends on what you think the middle is.Couric asked Biden and Palin identical questions, but only Palin was tripped.:1orglaugh

again more accuracy & wisdom from friday
<take the props, i've been drinkin ....
... but not that much >

what's strange about a black journalist writing about a
prominent black politician ?

it's like when karl rove was on tv the other night accusing
the dems of using all the dirty tricks, unfair tactics, personal
attacks etc ..
. the nerve & hypocrisy of the gop ...

... unbelievable

:2 cents:

Excellent post, Jagger
I think you and your wife nailed it.

I also think her corny and constant theme of "hockey mom" and "joe six-pack"....winking at the camera and using folksy phrases like "you betcha"....is wearing thin.

Yes. Of course there are those who just eat that shit up, but for most I thnk it's seen as the sophomoric pandering it is.

She's a nice, well meaning lady, I just can't figure out why in the he!! a woman like that would want to intermingle with the dysfunction of washington.

That's interesting. I don't see her as nice at all. I think she's ambitious, willful and petty, and based on her history the nickname she picked up back in high school, "barracuda sarah", seems very appropriate.

I don't think that Palin gets the fact that in "awashington", the d's and the r's hate each others' guts.

On the contrary I think she totally gets it. All those canned niceities about tolerance, diversity, bipartisaniship and "reaching across the aisle" are pablum for public consumption. Behind that thin smokescreen she knows this is a serious dogfight, one in which she's the advance guard for the religious right; the anything but compassionate conservatives.

Paul Begala of CNN commented that he thought Palin was trying to position herself for a 2012 Prez run. McCain "running up the white flag of surrender" in Michigan on the day of the debate told me all I needed to know about Sarah Palin's chances to actually "turn the numbers" around. The McCain campaign imploded last week and the sinking economy has sunk his chances to win. Obama has an 8pt national lead and leads in most key states.

My annoyance with the Dems is that I don't hear any Dem politican--Obama/Biden/Pelosi/Frank/Hillary/Bill/Bill Richardson articulate a clear position on the Iraq Occupation. They let the Pubs get away with building up the "success of the surge" and get away with war rhetoric of "we gotta stay til we get the job done" "we can't leave or we'll be coming back" "we don't want to lose the war" etc. It's bullshit. We won the war when Dubya declared "Mission Accomplished" 4 years ago. We are an occupying force at this point, playing both sides in a civil war we have no interest in getting involved with. We got rid of nasty Saddam. Iraq can have "democracy" if they want it. But the overall point is we can't afford this occupation anymore. Why can't a Dem articulate these thoughts? 68% of the American people wanted this occupation to come to a close in 2006. The Dems didn't try hard enough to end it.

Obama and Biden are probably going to win the Prez with a war policy that doesn't bring about an end to the Iraq Occupation soon enough, in my opinion. I support the desire to "finish Afghanistan" and hunt down Osama. I don't even believe McCain and Palin care enough about Afghanistan. All they care about is discussing "The Surge! The Surge! The Surge!"..why can't McCain "adjust" his Iraq position to reflect the economic reality we now face? Can't his administration find a better use for that $120billion a year given the fact that Iraq as $80bill sitting in an account in the Bank of New York? Why shouldn't we seize those monies as "reconstruction payback?"

I think Palin did better than I thought she would. I did think she was going to fall on her face and embarrass herself. Joe Biden looked smoother and "more presidential" by far...but as Jagger said..there IS a charismatic appeal to Sarah Palin...frankly, I wish she was from a Continental US state, like Ohio or Washington State"...her backwoods/backwater appeal is weak and I suspect she will spend the next 4 years "polishing herself" to ready a 2012 Prez run....

I don't ever recall any Republican candidate adopting "Working Class" "Populist" rhetoric like Sarah Palin has. Karl Marx would be laughing in his grave at that....Republicans believe that the Middle Class is "an annoyance" and only Upper-Middles and American Aristocrats are to be in power and courted. The financial position of the Repub voter that Palin "speaks to" (Joe SixPack/Momma Hockey) is FAR BETTER SERVED by Democrats...minimum wage increases..living wage...universal health...trade protection....etc.

That would be a "Start Pakistan" policy.

The Republicans are the party of the middle class in America, and have been for almost for 30 years. "Reagan Democrats." Cope. The Middle Class doesn't earn minimum wage and doesn't care about folks who do. Most middle class folks are insured and are the single group least concerned about health care. Democrats don't support trade restriction any more than Republicans -- NAFTA?

All polls show that folks over $250,000 are R, > $125,000 are D, > $35,000 are R, and the poor are D.

Most middle class folks do OK and don't crave a paternal government.

BTW, I plan on voting for Obama. Any mention of Marx just gets me going. :yinyang:

I think Obama has made this clear from the beginning. Those of us that have investigated the corrupt reasons for the involvement in Iraq I think clearly see this in his words, and humbly I have to say my knowledge on the subject of the Bush corruption, Iraq and US political history has gone way beyond what's talked about in 60 second commercials. McCain and Co. are stuck in the Bush policies and Obama has stated a clear separation from the beginning of those ideas despite the fact McCain suddenly sees himself as the candidate of change after only recognizing last month the economy is in trouble. (I only own one house).

Re: Palin vs. Biden Debate -

For somebody who didn't know the questions that were coming, she didn't do so bad after all.

Aside - Its funny how disorganized the McCain camp is - Apparently, Palin Had no idea that McCain pulled out of Michigan. Palin, apparently found out about it the day following the debate, via the daily news.

This just goes to show that McCain has conspired with Soreohhs and the dems in running a purposefully loosing republican ticket, while taking the reps great future hope (Palin) down with him.

Neither were going to get my vote anyhow.

Amazing what you can do with money.

I get it. I get IT !

Pretty good debate last night between McBain and Barry...

I hate to admit that Obama was chanelling some of my frustrations on some of his commnets, i.e. the misspending of money going down that "funnel" (taking that from AFA) that is the Iraq war and the health care answer in relation to that. Not a lot of experience but he is up to date with his message to us, he might win this one.

John's health plan also has some good stuff but once again he is caught up in Bush and the GOP war in Iraq that was in search of wmds...He does look kinda tired too and I do think it is his age, not trying to bash on old folks.

Nothing really that I didn't hear from the last debate . Obama again looked more calm, thoughtful, diplomatic & amplified McCain's more erractic personality & warmongering tendencies. Obama pointed out McCain's reckless remarks about anihilating N Korea,'Bomb Bomb Iran' & 'now on to Baghdad 'before we barely had secured Afghanistan which attests to this.

Only thing NEW that I heard was McCain's plan to buy out all of those bad mortgages & renegotiate them with fixed low interest rates. I don't think those Republicans who like to preach personal responsibility & less governmet want to hear that it may cost an estimated $300billion more to do.:dunno:

Obama I think missed an oppurtunity to reach older Americans by mentioning how McCain believes in partial privatization of Social Security which I don't believe will go over too well in this economic climate.

'Undecided' voters are full of crap after 18 months of this Election process:sleep:(which should be shortened) & they still haven't made up their minds yet.

Obama wins.
