Sergio Martinez-Paul Williams Deal Reached, Presser Set

BoxingScene.com was advised that a deal has been reached for Sergio Martinez (45-2, 24KOs) to defend his WBC middleweight title against Paul Williams (39-1, 27KOs) on November 20 in Atlantic City. Last December they exchanged first round knockdowns in a twelve round "fight of the year" thriller. Williams got the win by way of majority decision. HBO will televise the rematch.

November is looking very good for boxing with Lopez/Marquez, Judah/Matthysse, Pacquiao/Margarito, Martinez/Williams, and Marquez/Katsidis

Cotto Turns Down Cintron, Vanes: Latin Fury Planned

Gabriel Penagaricano, the legal advisor to WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, has shed some light on the various rumors connected with the Puerto Rican star's next ring appearance. Penagaricano told Carlos Gonzalez that Cotto had two offers on the table for a possible December 4 doubleheader. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was going to fight in the co-feature with Pawel Wolak.

The original plan had Cotto fighting Chavez Jr. on the December 4 date. Top Rank felt the contest was being staged too close to the Pacquiao-Margarito pay-per-view and pushed it back until the spring of next year. When Chavez Jr. was withdrawn as a possible opponent, Cotto*felt Cintron and Vanes*were not*suitable replacements and turned both of those fights down.

"With the departure of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Miguel knew that the other potential candidates were not on the same scale," said Penagaricano. "They did not*meet*Miguel's expectations and he understood that it was best to take the rest of the year off and then return at some point during the first couple of months of 2011. Michael would prefer to wait for an attractive fight. Unless there is a super-attractive fight, which we don't foresee at this time, then we don't see Miguel fighting*until 2011."

Golden Boy, Top Rank Prepare For Major Legal Battle

The two*largest boxing promoters in the United States are once again preparing for battle in a legal ring. On Tuesday, Golden Boy Promotions filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of Nevada against Top Rank Promotions, Top Rank CEO, Bob Arum, and Top Rank CFO David Lopez, accusing the duo of racketeering and fraud and seeking damages in the range of $3 to $5 million plus attorneys fees related to money generated from three Manny Pacquiao fights.

In accordance with a settlement between the two companies in 2007, Golden Boy owns a percentage of Pacquiao's promotional contract. In the legal papers, Golden Boy claims their company is owed millions of dollars from Pacquiao's 2008 lightweight title bout against David Diaz, his 2009 welterweight title bout against Miguel Cotto and his March welterweight title defense against Joshua Clottey. Golden Boy claims further, that*Top Rank has often failed to report revenue from*Pacquiao's fights and falsely inflated expenses to avoid paying their company the agreed upon percentage from their 2007 settlement.

Alfredo Angulo's U.S. Career Crumbles, HBO Walks

Who let the dog out?

That's not the question when it comes to the shattered professional boxing career of crowdpleaser Alfredo "Perro" Angulo.

The only remaining question is when ICE, the Immmigration and Customs Enforcement agency of the federal government, will remove the 19-1, 16 KOs slugger out of the United States and send him back to his native country of Mexico.

I learned through several sources, including Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, that HBO's legal department has advised Angulo promoter*Gary Shaw that because the action fighter is in America illegally the prime cable network will not use him on its airwaves.

"Nobody is going to touch this guy," Arum told me. "Nobody is interested now because of the huge legal problem. He picked the wrong time to be an illegal immigrant in our country, that's for sure."

Other sources tell me that the news that Angulo first entered the U.S. illegally, was later deported back to Mexico, and then snuck back in at least a second time -*blindsided both Shaw, who has spent time and money over about four years building his burgeoning career, and manager Mike Criscio.

Certainly, no American politician is going to bat for an illegal, even an athletic celebrity like Angulo, and especially not in the current heated climate in which both the Democratic and Republican parties are battling over what to do about the tide of illegals in a trying economic period.

"Angulo never told anybody about it," a source familiar with the situation said Tuesday. "He was at ringside at the Sergio Mora-Shane Mosley fight in L.A.. acting like he doesn't have a care in the world. He is as brazen outside the ring as he is in it when that opening bell rings."

Angulo. who was born in border city Mexicali, had a significant amateur career. He represented Mexico in the 2004 Olympics but dropped a 38-23 decision to Ireland's Andy Lee. He also won a bronze medal in the 2003 Pan American Games.

His lone pro defeat came at the hands of rugged Kermit Cintron, by unanimous decision over 12 rounds in a WBC super welterweight elimination bout in Hollywood, Florida, on May 3, 2009.

Caballero moving up to fight Litzau in Las Vegas

Former unified junior featherweight titlist Celestino Caballero, unable to lure a quality opponent into the ring for his second featherweight fight, is moving up in weight again to face Jason Litzau on Nov. 27.

The scheduled 10-round junior lightweight fight will open HBO's Nov. 27 card headlined by Juan Manuel Marquez's lightweight championship defense against Michael Katsidis at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

"Caballero is moving up because he basically has to," DiBella said of the 5-foot-11 Caballero. "He's outgrown the 122-pound weight class. At 126, he is unquestionably being avoided. If we could have worked out suitable opposition we could have made a reasonable deal, and he would have stayed at 126. It didn't happen."

Panama's Caballero (34-2, 23 KOs) debuted at featherweight in April with a dominant decision win against previously undefeated contender Daud Yordan on HBO on Berto's last undercard. Caballero preferred to next fight one of the elite featherweights, such as titleholders Juan Manuel Lopez or Yuriorkis Gamboa, but neither has accepted his challenge.

Left with no other options at featherweight acceptable to HBO, Caballero, who ranks on most pound-for-pound lists, elected to move up again, opening the door for former featherweight title challenger Litzau (27-2, 21 KOs), of Saint Paul, Minn.

Abraham-Froch, Dirrell-Ward Double Set For 11/27

NEW YORK–The Group Stage 3 matchups in the Super Six World Boxing Classic, the unprecedented boxing tournament from SHOWTIME Sports® featuring the world’s best super middleweights, have been rescheduled for November 27, it was announced today by Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President and General Manager for sports programming on the network.

The matchup between breakout American stars and friends, Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell, will headline the SHOWTIME® telecast on Saturday, Nov. 27, live at 9p.m. ET/PT.* Ward vs. Dirrell, one of the most talked about matchups of the year, will be contested for Ward’s WBA championship and the newly vacated WBC belt, adding yet another dramatic layer to an already captivating fight.

On the same night, Saturday, Nov. 27 from Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland, Arthur Abraham will meet former WBC titlist Carl Froch for their pivotal Group Stage 3 fight.* Promoters Kalle Sauerland and Mick Hennessy are working with the Hartwell Areena to finalize details for the event.* This bout, matching arguably the two toughest and most aggressive punchers in the Super Six, has been rescheduled from Oct. 2 due to a back injury to Froch.

Odlanier Solis Released By Top Rank, Signs With King

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has confirmed to BoxingScene.com that Odlanier Solis*was granted an "amicable" release from his Top Rank contract, and*quickly signed a promotional agreement with Don King. Solis (16-0), a Cuban-born 2004 Olympic gold medal winner, is quickly rising in the heavyweight ranks. Solis is co-promoted by Ahmet Oner of Arena Box.

"He did so with our permission. It was an amicable deal," said Arum. "Solis is better off with King in the heavyweight division, which we're not active in. They offered us our money back and everything, and so he's going to work with Don King."

Alfredo Angulo's Manager Working Hard To Fix Visa Issue

Despite Alfredo "Perro" Angulo's* tangled legal status, the Mexican fighter's manager, former Yale University policeman Mike Criscio is not ready to throw in the towel.

Criscio conceded the situation had "blindsided" both he and promoter Big Gary Shaw.

"The kid is upset, naturally," Criscio told me Friday. "But I am working through political and legal channels every way that I can on his behalf. He's not a criminal. He's not a drug dealer. He's not a murder or a molestor.

"The kid has always paid his taxes here. He's a boxer who has paid his taxes. I'm not abandoning him. It's not a crime to be a Mexican fighter who came here to improve to his life. Hopefully, we can get anything, a temporary visa or something else, so he can remain in America and keep fighting."

The boxing seas have been churning lately for Criscio, who owns check cashing and pawn shops around New Haven. He was pushed out as manager of former light heavyweight champ Chad Dawson and now Dawson has taken on former adviser and rap music mogul James Prince as his de facto manager in a settlement of a lawsuit.

As far as Angulo, who was once removed from the USA for illegal entry, Criscio hopes the political climate will cool on the hot button issue of immigration.

Angulo, age 28, owns a 19-1 with 16 knockouts.

Ines Sainz To Work Pacquiao vs Margarito Events

Finally, a boxing promoter has done something to beautify boxing.

Top Rank has made arrangements with Mexican network TV Azteca for Ines Sainz, the gorgeous sportscaster who caused an uproar during a recent visit to the NFL New York Jets camp, to be involved in events surrounding the Nov. 13 Antonio Margarito-Manny Pacquiao PPV bout at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Promoter Bob Arum spoke to his Mexican connection, Tijuana-based promoter Fernando Beltran about adding Sainz to work the microphone during the official weigh in and be involved in other events.

I'll have a Pacquiao/Margarito thread up sometime in the next couple of weeks

Super Six Cruiserweights: Potential Bouts, Schedule

During the Polish broadcast for Wlodarczyk vs Robinson, the broadcasters presented what will seemingly be a potential schedule for the first stage of proposed "Super Six" analogue among the cruiserweights. IBF champion Steve Cunningham (23-2, 12 KOs) will put his title at risk against hard-hitting Russian bomber Denis Lebedev (22-0, 17 KOs), while WBO master Marko Huck (30-1, 23 KOs) collides with French WBA interim beltholder Steve Herelius (20-1-1, 12 KOs) in a partial unification of the titles; both contests to be held in December. In January 2011, WBC champion Wlodarczyk will take on Yoan Pablo Hernandez (22-1, 11 KOs) in the third and last fight of the first stage. This schedule is surely a preliminary one.

Ryol Li Lee Shocks Poonsawat in a Upset! Wins WBA Title

Fernando Montiel Hopes Nonito Donaire Fight Comes Off

WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel is ready for his next title defense. Montiel's return may be getting pushed from October 30 in Colombia to November 20 in Mexico. He*was due to fight Eric Morel as part of the WBO's annual convention but Morel vacated his WBO interim title and withdrew from their contest. Montiel*may*face Alejandro Valdez, who*nearly stopped*the champion the last time they met in ring.

If Nonito Donaire beats Wladimir Sidorenko on December 4 and Montiel wins his next defense, Top Rank wants to have them fight each other in early 2011.

"I do not know yet who is the opponent, but we must*do everything to leave with our*hands raised and see if it is true that in February we could have a fight with Nonito Donaire," said Montiel. "I think it would be the best fight at this weight, even above anything the bantamweight tournament is doing."

Super Six Bombshell!Andre Dirrell Has Withdrawn!

Ken Hershman, the general manager of Showtime Sports, has announced that Andre Dirrell has withdrawn from the Super Six Boxing Classic with an injury. The nature of the injury was not disclosed. Hershman said WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward will still fight on November 27 against a replacement opponent.

Dirrell comes on the heels of WBC champion Mikkel Kessler pulling out with an eye injury and being replaced in the tournament by Glen Johnson, who faces Allan Green in the third stage of the Super Six on November 6 in Las Vegas. Green had replaced Jermain Taylor who withdrew after the first stage of the tournament.

There are many who believed all along that Dirrell and Ward, because they are close friends, would never fight each other. When asked for his opinion on the matter, Hershman said "that's not my job" in terms of pursuing whether or not the injury is legit.

"We have a few options on the table" said Hershman, when asked if there is a replacement in mind.

Hershman said there is a chance that the upcoming fight involving Ward could be held "outside of the tournament" because Ward has 4 points inthe tournament and advances to the semi-finals, win or lose, based onhis score tally. Ward's next fight will likely take place at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, where his last two bouts have taken place.

Ironic since there was a big dispute between the Ward and Dirrell camps over the venue location.

Hershman said "the Super Six will continue and the semi-finals will happen next year."

Shaw Says Andre Dirrell's Reason For Withdrawal is Legit

According to promoter Gary Shaw, the super middleweight Andre Dirrell's reason for withdrawing from the Super Six is legitimate. The General Manager for Showtime Sports, Ken Hershman, announced on Thursday that Dirrell had withdrawn from the tournament.

He was scheduled to face WBA champion Andre Dirrell in the third stage of the Super Six on November 27.

Over the course of the last few months, there has been speculation that Ward and Dirrell were refusing to fight each other because of their close friendship. They were 2004 Olympic teammates. They were initially set to fight on September 25, but the two sides never reached an agreement on the venue and the date had to be postponed.

Due to the widespread rumors that both fighters were unwilling to face each other, Showtime issued legal letters to promoters Dan Goossen and Gary Shaw, reminding them of their contractual obligation to make the fight happen.

Shaw says the friendship with Ward had nothing to do with Dirrell's withdrawal. Dirrell is reportedly suffering from a "neurological problem."

"The injury, and I wouldn't call it an injury, but a neurological problem. We have had him examined by a neurologist, who advised Andrenot to train or to fight until further notice. Another advanced battery of tests will be done in a little while," said Shaw."

It wasn't something where I could not give Showtime a new start time for him. It's for right now, how long that he will be out, we just don't know until we get clearance. It's something that we will have to wait on until we receive clarity from the doctors."

Hershman said that Ward is still going to fight on November 27, either against a Super Six replacement or take part in a contest that is"outside of the tournament" at the Oracle Arena in Oakland.

At Muang in Srisaket, Thailand, WBC flyweight champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (77-3, 40KOs)*retained his title with a close, twelve round unanimous decision over Suriyan Por Chokchai (14-5, 4KOs). The scores were 115-114, 114-113 and 115-112. It was surprising that Wonjongkam had so much trouble with a far less experienced challenger. It was the first defense of title Wonjongkam won from popular Japanese fighter Koki Kameda earlier this year.

Sprott Beats Skelton To Win Prizefighter Tournament

At the*York Hall*in Bethnal Green, London, Barry Hearn's latest Prizefighter tournament kicked off, “Prizefighter Heavyweights IV.” In the first quarter final bout, veteran Matt Skelton (24-5, 20 KOs)*dominated Ali Adams (9-3-1, 3 KOs)*for a three round unanimous decision. The scores were*30-37, 30-37 and*29-28. Future Klitschko title challenger Derek Chisora had picked Ali to win the tournament.

In the second quarter final bout, the last man to beat Mike Tyson,*Kevin McBride (35-7-1, 29 KOs), won a three round split decision over Franklin Egobi (15-4, 10 KOs). The scores were 29-28 and 29-28 for McBride and 29-28 Egobi.

In the third quarter final bout, Shane McPhilbin (3-1, 3KOs) upset previously undefeated Declan Timlin (7-1, 4KOs) by way of a second round stoppage. McPhilbin dropped Timlin in the second round and then landed a few more punches before the referee jumped in to stop the fight.

In the last quarter final bout, Michael Sprott (33-15, 17KOs) was too much for Danny Hughes (7-2-2, 2KOs). Sprott easily won a three round unanimous decision. Sprott wobbled Hughes in the first. They exchanged punches in second, which opened up a bad cut on the*left side of Hughes' face. Sprott was shaking him up with several big punches. A replace showed that the cut suffered by Hughes came from a clash of heads. Sprott easily won the third round by outfighting Hughes. All three judges scored it 30-27 for Sprott.

In the first semi-final bout, Matt Skelton (25-5, 20 KOs) won a unanimous three round decision over Kevin McBride (35-8-1, 29 KOs). The fans booed the decision.

After Skelton got the first round in the bank, McBride rocked him in the second and put him down but the referee missed the punch that landed*and*waved off the*knockdown. Skelton was exhausted in the third round. They stayed close hitting each other on the inside. Skelton ended strong in the third with a good flurry but it was a very close round. All three judges scored it 29-28 for Skelton. In the post-fight interview, Skelton made no excuses about McBride hurting him in the second or the referee blowing the knockdown call.

In the second semi final bout, Michael Sprott (34-15, 17KOs) easily won a three round unanimous decision over Shane McPhilbin (3-2, 3KOs).

In the first, they came out swingin with McPhilbin being tagged with a huge Sprott counter hook. Sprott outboxed McPhilbin for the next two rounds with few issues. All three judges scored it 30-27 for Sprott.

The Final

In the Prizefighter final, and the third meeting between the two fighters, Michael Sprott (35-15, 17KOs) won a three round split decision over Matt Skelton (25-6, 20 KOs). The scores were *29-28 for Skelton, 29-28 for Sprott and 29-28 for Sprott. Sprott*wins the Prizfighter tournament and the cash prize of 32,000-pounds.

The first two rounds were ugly and Sprott did a little of the better work. The third started with both trading punches. Sprott was jabbing for most of the third before they started trading big punches in the final twenty seconds. Skelton got the better of the final exchange. Skelton won both of their previous meetings.
