Nikolai Valuev's Left Shoulder Surgery is a Success

Golzka reports that former WBA world heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev had successful surgery on his left*shoulder at a top*Germany facility. Valuev, 37,*has been inactive since last November's decision loss to David Haye. He wants to*fight again*in 2011 and is very interested in resuming negotiations for a possible fight with WBC champion Vitali Klitschko. Klitschko defends his title against ex-champion Shannon Briggs on October 16 in Hamburg, Germany.*Valuev will return to his home in Russia next week.

IBF Tourney in Play, Winner To Face Wladimir Klitschko?

Several reports in the Russian press are suggesting that the IBF is considering another four fighter elimination style tournament to crown a new mandatory challenger to IBF/IBO/WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko.*The four fighters being considered are former cruiserweight champion Jean-Marc Mormeck,*K2 promoted boxer Johnathon Banks and Russian pugs*Alexander Dimitrenko and Denis Boytsov.

The IBF held a similar tournament in 2007 with Alexander Povetkin, Chris Byrd, Eddie Chambers and Calvin Brock. Povetkin beat Chambers in the final bout*of the tournament but to date has has never fought Klitschko. The were going to fight in December of 2008 before Povetkin withdrew with a training camp injury. They were once again*scheduled to fight, last month, but Klitschko replaced*Povetkin with Samuel Peter due to difficulties in finalizing the deal with the unbeaten Russian.

Bob Arum's Take on Manny Pacquiao vs Paul Williams

If Manny Pacquiao is able to get past Antonio Margarito on November 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Texas, the next logical step is a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. But with Mayweather's recent legal troubles, there is no way to predict*when*Floyd will be available.

Pacquiao and Margarito will*meet at a*catch-weight of 150-pounds*for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title. One of the names that continues to pop up as a potential Pacquiao opponent -*is Paul "The Punisher" Williams. If Pacquiao wins in Texas, and Williams beats Sergio Martinez for the WBC middleweight title on November 20 - then a possible scenario is on the table for*Pacquiao to pursue his ninth divisional title against Williams.

Top Rank's CEO, Bob Arum, is not too excited about a potential Pacquiao-Williams collision. The size difference is a bit too much, says Arum. However, if Pacquiao is impressive against a very big*boxer like Margarito, then a Williams fight could be explored in the near future.

"First we have to see how Pacquiao does against a bigger guy [Margarito]. One of the problems in a Paul Williams fight...is...it's one thing for Pacquiao to go up in weight and fight these big guys, but he's 5'6 barely and he'd be fighting a guy who is almost 6'3. Now that doesn't seem like it would make a great fight, but we'll see," Arum told FanHouse.

Gerry Penalosa Ends Career With Four Round Knockout

At the Zamboanga City Coliseum in*Zamboanga City, Philippines, former two division world champion Gerry Peñalosa (55-8-2, 37KOs) stopped Yodsaenkeng Kietmangmee of Thailand (12-3) in four rounds of action. The fight was a farewell bout for Penalosa. He ends*his 21-year boxing career on a winning note. Much of the proceeds*from the event will go to injured Filipino boxer Z Gorres.*Penalosa had lost his last two bouts as he entered the ring for this contest. He lost a controversial split decision in February to Eric Morel and in April 2009 he was stopped for the first time by current WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez.

Done deal: W. Klitschko set to fight Chisora

It's been tough for heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko to find opponents of late, but at least one fighter is willing to step into the ring with him.

England's Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KOs) signed on for a fight on Monday, according to Bernd Boente, Klitschko's manager.

"I think it's an interesting fight because a guy who is unbeaten is always an interesting opponent," Boente told ESPN.com. "He has a very good record and Wladimir and [trainer] Emanuel [Steward] watched some of Chisora's fights on YouTube and they said he's fast and can punch. They were impressed. They said he can definitely punch, has good hand speed and is mobile, and that always [makes for] a dangerous opponent."

Though Klitschko will be the heavy favorite -- as he usually is -- in the Dec. 11 fight in Mannheim, Germany at the SAP Arena, he said he would not look past Chisora, a 26-year-old native of Zimbabwe now living in England.

"I know that Dereck Chisora is a very dangerous opponent," Klitschko said. "He's young, he's fast and he's a very hard puncher. My coach, Emanuel Steward, has warned me about Chisora's quality and reminded me about the great Muhammad Ali, who lost his championship in 1978 to Leon Spinks in his eighth professional fight. I won't underestimate Chisora. I will prepare myself as intensely as I always do and try to give Chisora no chance."

Victor Ortiz vs Lamont Peterson Set For December 11

According to the Los Angeles Times , junior welterweight Victor Ortiz (28-2-1, 22KOs)*will face once-beaten Lamont Peterson*(28-1, 14KOs) on December 11 as the HBO televised co-feature to Amir Khan's defense of the WBA title against Marcos Maidana. The doubleheader takes place at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The only fighter to beat Peterson is WBO champion Timothy Bradley.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told the paper that Ortiz, if he wins, will get a title shot next. There will be two options presented to Ortiz, which includes the*Khan-Maidana winner or the winner*of January's unification between Bradley and Devon Alexander.

"He got his confidence back from the scene of the crime, and we believe he'll show in December that he's ready now to fight anyone at 140 pounds," Schaefer said.

Mikkel Kessler Will Retire if The Eye Injury Continues

Mikkel Kessler, the WBC's super middleweight "champion in recess," says there is no improvement in the eye injury that forced him to withdraw from the Super Six Boxing Classic. Kessler is holding out hope that the injury clears up. The popular Danish fighters withdrew from the Super Six tournament after complaining of double vision. Kessler's recovery could take as long as nine months, according to his doctors.

"It's still the same. There is no improvement yet. I do not spar. I can not train too hard. But you get used to going down the stairs and things like that," says Kessler to spn.dk. "I have no doubt that*it's going to get*better. The question is*when*is it going to happen."

Kessler will not take any chances with his vision. If the eye clears up, but then returns in either training camp, or his comeback fight, the popular Dane will retire from boxing to avoid any permanent injury to his vision.

"People*always say to me*'what if you get hit and it starts up again? What if you go blind? Is it worth it?' *No, it is not," Kessler says.

The WBC made him the "Champion Emeritus." Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham will fight his the vacant WBC title on November 27 in Helsinki, Finland. The status*of**"Champion Emeritus" allows Kessler to get an immediate title shot at the winner.

He's fightingnext month, against Audley Harrison, and I don't think he has theability to take a punch, so I'm afraid that he's going to get knockedout by Audley Harrison. Klitschko: I'm Afraid That Harrison Might Knock Haye Out

WBO/IBO/IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko is afraid that Audley Harrison is going to complete his promise by knocking out WBA champion David Haye on November 13 in Manchester, England. Haye told Klitschko that he has less than a year to reach an agreement withhim. The British boxer is claiming that he plans to retire before his 31st birthday on October 13, 2011. Klitschko says might not get there.

"He's trying to put this pressure by saying 'I'm going to retire next year.' But I'm afraid that he might retire even earlier. He's fighting next month, against Audley Harrison, and I don't think he has the ability to take a punch, so I'm afraid that he's going to get knocked out by Audley Harrison. Juan Manuel Lopez Retains, Stops Rafael Marquez

Las Vegas - At the MGM Grand, Juan Manuel Lopez (30-0, 27KOs) retained his WBO featherweight title with a stoppage of two-division champion Rafael Marquez (39-6, 35KOs) after eight rounds of exciting action. Marquez seemed to suffer a shoulder injury and could not continue after eight rounds, but Lopez was really coming on in*the last few rounds.

Lopez was hyped as the quicker guy, but it was Marquez who displayed the faster hands in the first. He was coming in and out with fast shots. Lopez was using his jab to set things up. He ended the round with flurry to trap Marquez in the corner.*Lopez began to let his hands go in the second. He appeared to be too strong for Marquez, at least early on. Marquez closed the second with a left hand. Marquez was really connecting well with counter left hands in the third, testing the jaw of Juanma.

Lopez started the fourth round by daring Marquez to go to war. They were trading punches and Marquez rocked Lopez with a counter hook. Marquez began to work Lopez over with punches. A frustrated Lopez hit Marquez as referee Tony Weeks broke them apart from a clinch. Weeks took away a point for the roughouse tactics by Lopez.

The counter hook of Marquez continued to work in the fifth. Lopez was able to get in a few good punches by getting around the jab of Marquez with overhand shots. Lopez came out very strong in the sixth by switching up his punches and using the straight left hand to score. The seventh round was all-Lopez, with Marquez taking a decent beating against the ropes in the final minute. The eight was an inside war with Lopez pushing forward. They traded a lot of punches in the final minute. Lopez was landing the harder blows.

Marquez was unable to come out for round nine and the fight was stopped. The Marquez corner said their fighter suffered a shoulder injury.

Glen Johnson Knocks Allan Green Out in Super Six Bout

Las Vegas - At the MGM Grand, Glen Johnson (51-14, 35KOs) returned to the super middleweight division for the first time in ten years to knock Allan Green (29-3, 20KOs) out in the eight round to advance to the Super Six semi finals. Johnson gets three points with the win. At the time of the stoppage, Green was winning the fight by split decision, with two judges having him up.

After two rounds where Johnson was pushing the contest, a big combination of punches against the ropes had Green in troubel as the third round came to a close. From that point, Green did a lot of holding and jabbing. He was rocked again at the end of the fifth round. The end of the sixth was more of the same, with Green boxing well but then getting rocked at the end of the round. The rounds were close because Green allowed Johnson to rally with the right hand at the end. At the end of the eight round, Johnson rocked Green with a right hand that put him down. He was barely able to get up, but ref deemed him too unsteady to continue and stopped the fight.

Cotto's Return Likely in March, But Not With Margarito

Miguel Cotto's first defense of the WBA's 154-pound championship*should occur in the month of*March but*it won't be a rematch with*Antonio Margarito, or a*unification with WBC champion*Manny Pacquiao - which once again leaves*Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. as a possible name being kicked around.

Margarito has an automatic stay of 120 days from the beating he received*last Saturday from Manny Pacquiao, which makes a March*rematch with Cotto impossible. And he will possibly need several months of recovery from the required surgery*for the broken right orbital bone.

There is also the issue on whether or not they can actually stage the rematch in New York. The New York State Athletic Commission may choose to honor the recent decision from California's athletic commission, who denied Margarito's application for a boxing license. Margarito was later*approved for a license in Texas for the Pacquiao fight.

Chavez Jr. will face Alfonso Gomez on December 4 in*California. It remains to be seen if Chavez can make the required weight of 154 for a*Cotto fight.

Margarito's Surgery is Successful, He is Ready To Fight

So when can I start running?" asked Antonio Margarito moments following successful surgery today to repair a fractured right orbital bone at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

Sergio Diaz, manager of Margarito, said "the doctor told us everything went perfect - no complications of any kind. There is nothing wrong with his right eye.

"Antonio is such a warrior. The first thing he asked was 'when can I start running' and we told him he has to relax for awhile," Diaz said.* "For sure, at least 60 days of no contact of any kind in a gym."

Margarito said "I fought as hard as I could against a great champion in Manny Pacquiao."

Margarito will stay at Methodist Hospital this evening. He is with his wife Michelle, managers Sergio Diaz, Francisco Espinoza and chief trainer Robert Garcia.* Margarito and his team will take a flight to Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Specialist Compares Ray Leonard, Margarito Eye Injuries

Well known eye specialist Dr. Arnold Salud says the fractured eye socket injury suffered by Antonio Margarito as a result of the battering he received at the hands of pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao is not as bad as the eye injury suffered by Sugar Ray Leonard in 1982.

The eye specialist from the American Eye Center recalled that Leonard was diagnosed with a detached* retina while training for a May 1982 fight with Roger Stafford in Buffalo, New York after which he announced his retirement.* However, Leonard ignored his doctors advice and came out oif retirement to score a 9th round TKO over Kevin Howard on May 14, 1984. In 1987 Leonard won the middleweight title beating southpaw Marvin Hagler in a controversial decision in one of the greatest fights of that era.

Dr. Salud said that to his mind the injury of Sugar Ray Leonard was “worse because in the retina detachment it’s the eye itself that is injured while in orbital fracture it’s the housing that is injured not the eye and if you can repair it well, all the more you can go back.”

When one or more bones surrounding the eye are broken the condition is called orbital fracture. The orbit is the bony structure around the eye and depending on where the fracture is located it can be associated with severe eye injury and damage.

Sergio Martinez Crushes Paul Williams in Two Rounds

At the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25KOs) got revenge with a crushing second round knockout of Paul Williams (39-2, 27KOs). Williams came out very fast and pressed the fight. Martinez pressed right back and they traded a lot of punches in the first round. In the second, Martinez landed a crushing left that caught Williams right on the button and sent him down face-first and out cold for the full count.
