Vitali Klitschko Beats Down Albert Sosnowski in Ten

... "And still WBC heavyweight champion of the wo-o-orld". Vitali Klitschko (now 40-2, with 38 KOs) notched another methodical and utterly effective beatdown in the fourth defense of his WBC crown with*a tenth round stoppage of brave and game but limited Polish opponent in Albert "Dragon" Sosnowski, who fell down to 45-3-1 with 27 KOs.

It was*the usual Klitschko performance*from the outset. His Polish rival, competing in front of a roaring crowd which had filled in the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, definitely felt the pressure of pro-Polish audience and looked extra nervous in the opening rounds. He tried to establish his jab but to no effect as there were too many superfluous movements and jerkings on his behalf. Vitali was calm and cautious as usual not letting his hands go except of a single right to the body of the Pole. Round two was another fever-like stanza for Sosnowski while Vitali gave him a taste of his left hand, which was as low at his waist as usual.

Round three was probably the best for the challenger. Sosnowski found a spot for several light jabs which gave Vitali a senseof urgency. he responded well with another right to the body which almost doubled Sosnowski and a left hand to make him a bit wobbly. All in all, it was an even round though. The fourth stanza saw Albert being caught with a massive right, half-a-bolo and half-an-uppercut, by the champion. Klitschko started to use his left equalizer more and more frequently. Sosnowski, losing what was left of his fight, landed several jabs. His legs were put too wide though and his stance was too unbalanced to connect with something meaningful.

Round five was in Vitali's favour. He couldn't help landing both his hands and considerably shook Sosnowski several times; yet Albert was able to survive till the end of the round paying a price with his nose bleeding at the end of the stanza. Rounds six and seven were almost alike as Sosnowski pressed forward on sheer will but was unable to tag bigger, longer Klitschko with anything of note. Vitali used his hands more wisely and even gave a rare glimpse of showboating at the end of round seven. Between the rounds Fiodor Lapin, Sosnowski's head coach, asked him to move inside.

In round eight, the Polish fighter continued to display his bravery and heart by trying to follow his trainer's instructions. He had some tiny success but it wasn't enough to prevent Klitschko to deal more and more punishment with each second of the fight. In round nine it became obvious that Albert Sosnowski would be lucky to survive*until the final bell. After a good start, he ate a monstrous right hand by the champion and started to shakingly flow around the ring. At the very end of the round the Big Brother landed another series of punches which almost stopped Sosnowski for good but he went on with*the fight.

Round ten proved it was only a matter of time and space before the Dragon would be buried by a stronger, fresher knight in the reigning champion. At the start of the second minute Vitali landed a major right hand and Sosnowski almost touched the canvas with his hands. He looked to be out on his feet, and he proved it a couple of seconds later when a huge right (yet another one!) by Vitali sent WBC #11 ranked heavyweight down hard, prompting veteran referee Jay Nady to waved this fight off immediately at 2:40 of the tenth stanza.

Sergio Martinez stripped of title by WBO at 160 pounds

Middleweight champion Sergio Martinez was feted in a ceremony at the WBO's Puerto Rican headquarters on May 11, when he was presented with his new title belt. Those good feelings did not last long.

Martinez, who took apart Kelly Pavlik to win a unanimous decision and the lineal championship on April 17, has been stripped of his WBO version of the 160-pound title.

In a letter Saturday to Martinez and his handlers, WBO president Francisco "Paco" Valcárcel informed him of the sanctioning organization's decision.

"I learned a while ago that these organizations don't give you a belt," Martinez said. "They loan it to you. When they elect to take it back, they take it back. I thank them for the opportunity to win it and to hold it, but there is nothing I can do about it if they want to take it back. They can match whoever they want below me [for the vacant belt], but in my view, that winner can't truly call himself a champion."

Chavez Jr. Being Positioned For Cotto-Foreman Winner

According to Fernando Beltran, president of Zanfer Promotions, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is being positioned to fight the winner of this Saturday's fight beween WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman and challenger Miguel Cotto. Chavez would fight the winner in September and possible sites include Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Antonio.

Beltran promotes Chavez Jr. along with Top Rank, who also promote both Cotto and Foreman. Chavez Jr. has a very tough task ahead on June 26, when he faces the toughest test of his young career in John Duddy. If Chavez Jr. comes out on top, Beltran will put him in against the Cotto-Foreman winner.

"Julio is*preparing to fight Duddy on June 26 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, and if the fight ends with Julio's arm being raised, he will face Cotto or Foreman in a title fight. Without question,*a Chavez*Jr. fight against Foreman or Cotto will be an attractive fight in Mexico and in the United States and the only thing we need to do is wait for the results of their fights," said Beltran.

Joel Casamayor: I'm Knocking Amir Khan Out Dead

Former two division champion Joel Casamayor (37-4, 22KOs) and co-manager Luis DeCubas Jr. reached out to BoxingScene.com to set the record straight on all of the rumors pertaining to a possible fight with WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17KOs).

According to DeCubas, the fight between Khan and Casamayor is very close to being finalized for July 31 in England. Casamayor has accepted the fight, although the money being negotiated is lower than the amount of*£400000 being reported by some of the UK papers.

DeCubas and co-manager Walter Kane are in the process of finalizing the details with Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. Khan-Casamayor*will indeed be packaged, likely on a delayed basis, with the Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz HBO pay-per-view, which takes place on July 31 in Las Vegas.

Casamayor has vowed to emulate*Breidis Prescott, who scored a brutal 54-second knockout over Khan in 2008.*The 1992 Olympic gold medal winner is*irritated with some of comments being put out there in the*press where people are underestimating his chances based on age.

"July 31 is a go.*Come July 31 lightning is going to strike twice because I'm going to knock Amir Khan out dead," Casamayor said. "I want to let the people know that I'm up for this fight."

"A lot of people are*putting bad things out there.*Timothy Bradley, [Marcos] Maidana and [Devon] Alexander, these guys have done nothing for this sport. What have they done for this sport?*I'm a four-time world champ in two weight classes. Amir Khan has done nothing either and come July 31st I'm going to prove that he's a nobody."

DeCubas tells BoxingScene that Casamayor has already begun to train*for the big opportunity.

"July 31st is basically the date that we're fighting Amir Khan. They money hasn't really been squared away 100%. We're working on that now. But Joel is going. Joel is training and he's ready to go," DeCubas said. "Joel has put his time in the game and he's going to prove it on July 31st."

During Khan's pre-fight hype for last month's*bout with Paulie Malignaggi, there was a lot of trash talking going on. DeCubas is not concerned about any of the pre-fight antics coming from Khan or his team.

"Do you think Amir Khan can play head games with Casamayor? Casamayor played head games with [Diego] Corrales and real fighters. Not made up stars," DeCubas said.

Miguel Cotto Punishes Yuri Foreman, Captures WBA Title

At New York's Yankee Stadium, Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28KOs) stopped previously undefeated Yuri Foreman (28-1, 8KOs) to capture the WBA junior middleweight title. Cotto becomes a three division champion.

Cotto put on the pressure in the first round with his left jab and hard shots. Foreman came out more active in the second round and was using his jab. They traded combinations in the final minute. Cotto shook Foreman with a good right. They were trading some hard hooks at the start of the third. Foreman landed a few good punches, and Cotto threw some of his own in the final twenty seconds.

In the fourth, Foreman landed three hard shots that*caught Cotto's attention. A hard right at the start of the second minute landed again. Cotto used the jab to set up a right hand. They traded in the final minute. Foreman's nose began to bleed at the end of the round. At the start of the fifth they began to trade. They traded hard left hooks. The tough pace continued in the final minute. The sixth saw Cotto use movement and quick punching to oubox Foreman.

During the seventh, Foreman fell from what appeared to be a slip when he planted his foot and hurt his knee. He was given time and made a decision to continue. Cotto went for the kill and Foreman fell again from a slip, hurting the knee. He was given more time and Cotto jumped on him and began to dish out some punishment. Foreman took the punishment, unable to really move away and began to fight back. During the eight round, Foreman's*corner threw in the towel to stop the fight but Foreman did not want to stop the fight and the referee threw everyone out of the ring and restarted the fight.

After the eight round was over, announcer Michael Buffer told the crowd that someone outside of Foreman's corner threw in the towel. During the ninth, Cotto landed the left hook to the body, Foreman went down and the ref jumped in to stop it.

Brawl at Yankee Stadium generates big ratings

NEW YORK -- The first fight at Yankee Stadium in more than three decades generated the highest rating of the year for HBO, which broadcast the ballpark doubleheader.

The main event that saw Miguel Cotto defeat Yuri Foreman for the junior middleweight title, along with Vanes Martirosyan's victory over Joe Greene on the undercard, generated a 3.9 rating for the premium cable network.

That equates to about 1.9 million viewers between the live telecast Saturday night and the replay Sunday morning.

The rating measures the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned into a program.

It was the first night of boxing at Yankee Stadium since September 1976, when Muhammad Ali defeated Ken Norton at the old ballpark that has since been torn down.

Former welterweight champ Antonio Margarito will seek reinstatement in Nevada

Former welterweight titleholder Antonio Margarito, who was barred from boxing in the United States after having his license revoked in California last year for his role in a hand-wrapping scandal, will seek a license from the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Friday.

Margarito's request for a license is the 32nd and final item on the commission agenda for the regularly scheduled meeting.

"We have him on last because that will be the longest part of the meeting," commission executive director Keith Kizer told ESPN.com on Tuesday.

NSAC Tables Margarito's Application For Reinstatement

A lengthy hearing held Friday morning to determine whether or not former two-time welterweight titlist Antonio Margarito should have his license reinstated in the state of Nevada ended with the decision to table his application until the fighter first re-appears in front of the California State Athletic Commission.

The motion to table the application means that Margarito will once again be given a chance to apply for reinstatement in Nevada, but not before the CSAC makes a ruling. The decision is not a denial of his license, which would have effectively resulted in an additional one-year suspension from Nevada, but does prevent him from fighting or negotiating for a fight in the state of Nevada until he is reinstated.

Margarito To Fight in Mexico, Arum Shreds Vegas Decision

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum is furious with Friday's decision by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Former three time welterweight champion Antonio Margarito appeared before the Nevada commission with respect to his recently submitted application to obtain a license to box in the state. A panel of commission members voted 4-1 to table his application, and directed Margarito to re-apply for a license in the state of California.

Timothy Bradley Decisions Carlos Abregu Over Twelve

At the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, California, WBO junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (26-0, 11KOs) moved up to 147-pounds to win a unanimous twelve round decision over previously undefeated Carlos Abregu (29-1, 23KOs). The scores were 118-110, 116-112 and 117-111.

Bradley came out fast using his speed to land shots. There was a clash of heads in the first that opened up a small cut above the right eye of Bradley. Abgreu got rocked in the second round from a right hand, but fought his way out of trouble. In the fourth, a Bradley hook opened up a cut above the right eye of Abragu.

A clash of heads wobbled Abregu in the seventh. They went to war at close range as Bradley tried to put him away. As rounds continued, Bradley was quicker and boxed circles around Abregu. There were moments when Bradley would land hard punches that shook Abregu but not enough to put him down. They traded punches in the final minute of the twelfth round to close the show.

Alfredo Angulo Destroys Joachim Alcine in One Round

At the Agua Caliente Casino in*Rancho Mirage, California, Alfredo Angulo (19-1, 16KOs) got his most impressive win to date when he destroyed former WBA champion Joachim Alcine (32-2, 19KOs) in the first round. The fight was a WBC junior middleweight eliminator.

Alcine started well working off the jab and landing hard shots. When they got in close, Angulo rocked him with some inside punches to the head. They started fighting toe to toe with Alcine giving as good as he was getting. Angulo began to turn up the heat and pinned Alcine against the ropes. He landed a left to the temple, a left to the chin and then then two rights hands. Alcine was out on his feet, dropping his hands and referee Dr. Lou Moret jumped in to stop the contest at 2:59 of the round.

Manny Pacquiao Says: Mayweather, King - 'Let's Get it On!'

In his recent column on philboxing.com, WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao discussed the relationship between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and promoter Don King. In the last two weeks, Mayweather and King have been spending a lot of time together and there are rumors the two of them could establish a future working relationship to make a Pacquiao fight deal.

"I hope Mayweather is serious enough in doing business with Don King and is not doing this only to save face. I hope Don King does the same in return, that he can make miracles happen. I say this to both these men: Let's Get It On. Fight like warriors and brave men," Pacquiao said.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr: I Hope To Fight Miguel Cotto Next

WBC silver middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is hoping to meet Miguel Cotto on December 4 in either the MGM Grand in Las Vegas or Madison Square Garden in New York City. Chavez will fight Pawel Wolak on September 11 in Mexico. If everything goes as planned, he will move back to the junior middleweight division to face Cotto for his WBA title.

"I have a tough fight ahead with Pawel Wolak. He's a very tough fighter and I hope to beat him and give a satisfactory showing to the people. And then I hope to have the fight with Miguel Cotto next," Chavez said.

Amir Khan Explains Why He Wants Marquez, Not Maidana

WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan made a recent*appearance on BoxingScene.com's official audio show, Leave It In The Ring, and explained why he's pushing to fight Juan Manuel Marquez, instead of taking the fight with his mandatory challenger,*WBA interim-champ Marcos Maidana. Khan plans to return to the ring on December 11 on HBO.

Khan's explained it as a business decision because Marquez has a*higher level of name recognition in the United State and England. He respects Maidana as a boxer, but the fight means less money and less hype in both countries. The fight doesn't make sense at this point of time. Khan presented a list of names to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, who also felt Marquez was the best choice for December.

Boxing vs Ice Hockey: Mikkel Kessler meets Christensen

The Viking Warrior will return to the ring on September 25 when he takes on Allan Green in their decisive Super Six World Boxing Classic Group Stage 3 clash. Kessler returned the favour by teaching Mads some light punching combinations which “might be useful on the ice”.

Tavoris Cloud Decisions Glen Johnson Over Twelve

Scottrade Center, St. Louis - In*a very active fight, Tavoris Cloud (21-0, 18KOs) retained the IBF light heavyweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over former champion and veteran Glen Johnson (50-14-2, 34KOs). The fight had action from start to finish, but Cloud had more steam on his shots at the end. Johnson at times was able to steal rounds with big spurts coming in the final thirty seconds of certain rounds. Cloud was able to keep the title around his waist by preventing Johnson from stealing the championship rounds with an outworking swarm. The score was 116-112 on all three cards.

Devon Alexander Tested, Still Beats Andriy Kotelnik

Scottrade Center, St. Louis - Before a crowd of over 9,000 screaming fans, IBF/WBC junior welterweight champion Devon Alexander (21-0, 13KOs) won a much tougher than expected twelve round unanimous decision over former champion Andriy Kotelnik (31-4-1, 13KOs). The score was 116-112 on all three cards. The next stop for Alexander is a likely showdown with Timothy Bradley on January 29.

The fight was very tough for Alexander, who suffered a bad cut above his right eye from a clash of heads in the early rounds. The blood was flowing all night long. Kotelnik was able to land a lot of hard punches throughout the fight and shook Alexander up several times. Alexander was able to stay on his feet and took everything that came his way and returned fire with hard combinations. There several close rounds where Alexander threw a lot more and Kotelnik landed better, and those rounds*could have*gone either way.

Sergio Martinez-Paul Williams in Play For November 20

According to Sampson Lewkowicz, an adviser for WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, negotiations have resumed for a rematch with Paul Williams. Negotiations were resumed after Alfredo Angulo*turned down an offer*of $750,000 to fight Martinez on HBO. Williams won a razor close majority twelve round decision over Martinez last December.

The new target date appears to be November 20 on HBO.*The fight*was originally being pushed for an HBO*slot on*October 2, which is now the target date for*a possible tripleheader featuring WBO*154-pound champion Sergei Dzinziruk, WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto and WBA super flyweight champion Celestino Caballero.

If Williams-Martinez lands on that date, the network is sure to pair it with the pay-per-view replay of Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito, taking place on November 13.

Don King Still Trying To Secure Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Hall of fame*promoter Don King is still trying to secure a promotional agreement with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Over the last few weeks, King and Mayweather have been spending some time together. King is hoping to put together the biggest fight in boxing, by landing Mayweather and then reaching a deal with Bob Arum for a mega-fight with Manny Pacquiao. King believes the fight will transcend the sport of boxing.

"Mayweather-Pacquiao would be universal. It would transcend earthly bounds. With what I have in mind for Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao, if I'm fortunate enough to be able to be a part of it and to be able to get Floyd, I'm looking at something that would be so stupendous that it would boggle the mind," King said.

Margarito Applies For a Texas License, Arum is Optimistic

It lasted over five hours, but on Wednesday the California State Athletic Commission voted 5-1 against*issuing Antonio Margarito a license to box in their state. Margarito lost the ability to box in the United States in February 2009 when his license was revoked by the*CSAC following a hand-wrapping scandal in January 2009.

Margarito (38-6, 27KOs) is scheduled to fight Manny Pacquiao on November 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The*vacant WBC junior middleweight title will be on the line. According to Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, Margarito has already applied for a license to box in the state of Texas. Arum is "very optimistic" that Margarito will be granted a license. Strong sources have indicated that Texas will likely grant Margarito's application for a license to box.

The ruling in California was the second setback for Margarito in 2010. He unsuccessfully applied for a license in Nevada, but the the state's athletic commission ruled that he must re-apply in California and have his case retried there before attempting to fight in Las Vegas. Arum appears confident about Margarito's chances to land a boxing license in Texas.

"The revocation is over, they've denied Antonio Margarito a license," said Arum. "But now, every state is free to grant him a license or deny him a license."

Margarito denied license to fight in California

The California State Athletic Commission on Wednesday denied former welterweight titlist Antonio Margarito a boxing license on a 5-1 vote after a nearly six-hour hearing in Los Angeles.

The denial throws into question Margarito's proposed fall fight against Manny Pacquiao, which would be for a vacant junior middleweight belt. In the dressing room before Margarito faced Mosley at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, illegal inserts were discovered in each of his hand wraps after Mosley's trainer, Naazim Richardson, objected to the way his hands had been wrapped. The wraps were cut off and the illegal pads, which were coated in a plaster-like substance, were discovered. Margarito's hands were re-wrapped and the fight went off with Mosley knocking him out in the ninth round to win the title.

California's denial means Margarito cannot re-apply there for at least one year. However, now that he has asked California regulators for a license, other commissions in the United States can make the decision on their own about whether he should be granted a license.

Margarito is expected to ask Texas for a license in the hopes of being granted one in order to fight Pacquiao at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington in an HBO PPV fight on Nov. 13. HBO had a camera at the hearing to record it for potential use in the "24/7" reality series it is planning for the build-up to the fight.

Although states typically uphold rulings in other states on licensing issues, that is not always the case. Mike Tyson, for example, was denied a license in Nevada in 2002 before he fought Lennox Lewis for the heavyweight title. After the denial, Tyson was licensed in Tennessee and the fight took place.

Margarito's attorney, Daniel Petrocelli, who gained fame for winning a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of Ronald Goldman's family against O.J. Simpson and for representing former Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling, was disappointed with the decision.

"We are very disappointed in the ruling," Petrocelli told ESPN.com. "We thought the evidence was indisputable and that the license should have been granted. Almost to a person, the commission expressed the view that Tony was honest and sincere and the chairman (John Frierson) voted to grant the license, and (Frierson) is only one of two commissioners who were on the commission for the revocation hearing.

Margarito (38-6, 27 KOs) told the commission the same thing he said during his license revocation hearing last year -- that he knew nothing about the illegal pads, which trainer Javier Capetillo took the blame for. Capetillo's license was also revoked.

Bradley vs Alexander: Promoters and HBO Reach a Deal

A junior welterweight unification between*WBC/IBF junior welterweight*champion Devon Alexander and WBO*king Timothy Bradley is inching closer to deal. Their promoters, Don King and Gary Shaw, met with HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg, and Senior Vice President of Sports*Kery Davis on Thursday.*A deal was reached, which includes a 50-50 split between the fighters.

The only thing left is for*both fighters to accept the deal. King, who handles Alexander, and Shaw, who promotes Bradley, will return to their fighters with the financial figures for their approval.

"HBO made us an offer that I accepted and that Don King accepted. Now we have to go back to the fighters and see if they'll accept the offer. If they do, then the fight is on. If they don't, then there will be no fight," said Shaw. "The fight is absolutely, 100 percent a 50-50 split. I don't discuss money, and I won't discuss any of the other terms except to say that it's a 50-50 split. Both sides are equal partners."

Super Six Shocker: Mikkel Kessler Withdraws, Injured

The Super Six Boxing Classic has taken yet another blow as WBC super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler has withdrawn from his*fight with Allan Green, scheduled to take place on September 25 in Denmark and televised by Showtime. Based on the reports in Denmark, Kessler is suffering from an eye injury that has affected his vision for the last few months. Kessler was advised to stay away from sparring, and fighting, for a few months. He is hoping to fight again in the early to mid part of 2011.

Super Six News: Abraham-Froch, Ward-Dirrell, Green Out?

With the unexpected withdrawal of Mikkel Kessler from the Super Six tournament, BoxingScene.com was advised that Showtime is leaning in the direction of fast-forwarding the Super Six to the semi-finals. Kessler withdrew from the tournament on Wednesday, citing a serious*eye injury. Kessler's recovery could take up to nine months.

As previously reported on BoxingScene, the upcoming Super Six clash between Arthur Abraham and Carl Froch,*scheduled for October 2, will likely*have the vacant WBC super middleweight title at stake.

The general manager for Sauerland Event, Chris Meyer, advised BoxingScene that Kessler will likely vacate his WBC title - and because Andre Dirrell [WBC #1] is scheduled to fight WBA champion Andre Ward*- that would leave Abraham [WBC #3] and Froch [WBC #2]*in position to collide for the vacant belt.

If Showtime goes in their likely direction of fast-forwarding to the semi-finals, Ward-Dirrell and Abraham-Froch would become the semis - and Allan Green, who*doesn't have any points in the tournament,*would be pushed out of the Super Six.

Cotto's Shoulder Surgery To Prevent Chavez Jr. Fight?

Last month, WBA 154-pound champion Miguel Cotto underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, which could prevent a possible fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on December 4.*Gabriel Peñagaricano, Cotto's lawyer, said the surgery should not alter their plans for a Chavez fight at the end of the year.

But at a recent Boxeo Boricua press conference in Puerto Rico, Cotto told a reporter that because of the shoulder surgery, he may not be able to start training until November. The training delay has not been confirmed.

Marquez vs Katsidis in Play For November 27, Khan is Out

According to manager and trainer Nacho Beristain, WBO/WBA lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez will remain at 135-pounds to make a mandatory defense of his titles against Michael Katsidis. Beristain told reporters in Mexico that his fighter wants to stay in the lightweight division to defend his titles. The date being mentioned in the Mexican press is November 27 on HBO.

Marquez's decision comes as no surprise but it has little to do with him defending his titles. In an earlier story on BoxingScene.com, WBA 140-pound champion Amir Khan said Marquez was asking for too much money to make*a fight possible between the two of them*for December 11. Khan will probably now defend his title against WBA mandatory Marcos Maidana.
