I cant believe no-one has mentioned Enemy at the Gates , great movie , also The Thin Red Line , Schindlers List are great WW2 movies

Argh! NO NO NO. Saving Private Ryan is shit. All it has going for it is the opening 30 minutes, then it becomes a run-of-the-mill war movie.

Maybe it was pathetical shit... but these first 30 Minutes were one of the best interpretations of that senseless, insane and neverending violence in this war.
This interpretation caused, that hundreds of WW2-veterans (from all countries!) ran crying right out of the cinema in the first few minutes of the film. Psychological hotlines had to be arranged, because these 30 minutes evoked the horror of long-forgotten things.

Another movie, which shows all the shit that can happen is "Johnny Got His Gun" from 1971. Most of you know some scenes through the original video of Metallica´s "One".

"Das Boot" surely is one of the best WW2 movies. But only from the view of a submarine-crew. For german film-freaks this movie is great for many reasons. But one shouldn´t forget, that in this movie there is no good or evil. No Nazis are shown. No Nazi-misdeeds are shown.

You all should know, that war is not just winning and loosing. War is not beeing right or wrong. War is not just a computergame. And especially... war is not CNN!

1941 starring John Belushi

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
What? Not even a mention of Flags of our Fathers or Letters from Iwo Jima??? :wtf:

A few others that deserve honorable mention:

The Enemy Below
Run Silent, Run Deep
The Caine Mutiny
Mr. Roberts
The Sands of Iwo Jima
The Flying Tigers

I thought of that movie as well but it was a WWI movie so, technically, doesn't qualify. If someone ever does a thread about that, it gets my vote. One of the best movies that doesn't get a lot of praise period.

Yes and no. There was the first officer, an object mostly of scorn, who was a Nazi ideologue, a Hitler youth graduate. Then there were the Nazis on the supply ship in Spain, also mostly objects of scorn - as was Hitler himself, in a thinly veiled way, in the opening scene at the bar, and later Goering also, in the officer's quarters aboard ship.

And yes there is good and evil in the film. War itself, and inhumanity, are the evils.

Are Schindler's List and R. Benigni's Life Is Beautiful accepted ?

The Big Red One starring Lee Marvin & directed by Sam Fuller, who were both WWII vets.

A Midnight Clear - has anyone seen this movie? I only know of 3 or 4 hard core movie geeks who've seen it, but they love it.
