They take a selection of random viewers and give them viewing boxes (guessing) so that they can work out an average of who is watching what.. it's all bollocks
I remember a few years ago the system used to calculate the viewing figures was changed and it was discovered that in fact less people were watching the shows.

Crumpet is a sort of muffin , very popular toasted at one time.It's also a slightly dated word for attractive young ladies.
Treacle is generally used to describe golden syrup though there is a stronger black treacle rather like molasses.
