A Few Reasons to Love Germany

Corvette ...

Regarding the Corvette: It's one of those cars that should really silence the room in awe of that fact that it performs spectacularly at a price point impossible for any Euro car. Instead, it always gets worked over and slammed. However, no matter where a car magazine is published, no matter what the outcome (usually with a snide review putting it in last), it competes with, and often beats supercars costing 2,3,4 times as much.
Agreed. Sometimes I think it's just bashed in the media because it's American, just like some media outlets bash German cars because their German too.

In all honesty, if you drive a Corvette in Germany, you will get some looks. On the GT and other circuits, the Vette still gets a lot of love overseas.

Re: As an American Engineer ...

Im sorry georges youre so damn wrong in so many points....Id better stop discussing this with you...because you dont know so much about cars as me....
Especially about German cars...
Many of your points sound like you only know them from TV or something.
And btw you cant tell me AMG is just a tuner...nor can you tell me that anyone builds better or equal engines...

So Im sorry, but Im tired of discussing this...you have definately no real facts...
and you cant tell me anything about carsthat I dont know.
Maybe you just got my points wrong, I dont care.
No offense meant but this makes no sense.

And you say that I have no real knowledge  :1orglaugh
funny frenchman
Are you a mechanic?
Me knowing germans car from tv? Not at all, my father owned many german cars BMW 2002 Turbo (an aftersaught collectible) during 10 years, he also owned a 1985 325i, a 1989 jetta gt and also owned an american car a1966 Imperial Crown Le Baron.I have a 1970 Chevelle SS 454 but it is in the states in Texas in my uncle's garage, I drove it several sometimes. I have also repaired a lot of friends's german cars (1989 MB 560SEC, 1996 MB 600SEL, BMW 328i and VW CORRADO G60 just to list some of them) and american cars (1997 Cadillac Seville STS, 1970 Corvette 427, 1970 Dodge Challenger 440 just to name a few). Which official source claims Mercedes Benz makes the best engine of the world please?
Here is an official source listing the best engines of 2007
http://www.vicky.in/straightfrmtheheart/worlds-best-engine/
As much as I respect MB, there are several competitors to MB who makes equals engine these include porsche, audi and bmw. So where are the facts if I may ask?
You perhaps know American cars through biased media (maybe Top Gear and other european magazines written by some very heavy and biased fanboys) but my question (excuse me if it is naive) is did you ever owned or ever drove one American car?
I think many post 2000's german cars are very ugly in terms design and another thing is that people don't keep their cars during 20 years as they used in the past. Reliability means good gas mileage, solid body frame, heavy duty components and an engine simple to fix. Today engines are all of electronics and you can't do nothing by your ownself (which is quite sad). Some are extremely reliable and others are a real pain in the ass.

As I said, Im not going to further dicuss this with you. But I can say that I owned and drove several American cars. And cars from other coutries.
My dad owns lots of cars. Even from America.
I drove for example the Corvette Z06, the new Ford Mustang GT (shelby as well), several Dodges and Cadillacs (old and currents), Hummer H1, H2 and H3, Lincoln Navigator, Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, a 60s Impala and many many more.
As I said I drove many American cars but none of them was as good as a German or Italian car.
I never said that Americans cant build cars and I also never said that they cant build good and "sexy" cars. Theyre just not as good as German or Italian cars...

btw I dont watch things like "Top Gear"...

This is not true...Many Germans see the Corvette as a "Zuhälter-Auto" (something like Pimp-Car)

Plus I drove the Vette Z06...its a very good car...but it is not as luxirious as German or Italian cars...Thats why its so cheap.
No "good" leather seats and many parts inside are made out of plastic.
Though the Engine is pretty strong and nice. As I said this car has muscles!

Your dad has good taste in terms of cars. The new mustang gt is meh, I don't like its design. The only real stangs for me are the 67-70 stangs and most especially the ones powered by the 390ci code s and 428ci cobra jet and super cobra jet engines. Very agressive handling and quick acceleration.
And my favorite cadillac and the best I have ever driven was the 1970 eldorado with its 500ci engine. The best Trans Am I drove was a 1971 with a 455 High Output engine and that was in Geneva three years ago.
About Italian cars, they are nice but their reliability and durability is average.
I am also glad you don't watch TOPGEAR because Jeremy Clarckson is an idiot.
We will perhaps never agree on cars but always nice to talk with you :glugglug:

I agree in many points you mentioned about American cars (I love all cars), but nobody can tell me that there are equal or better cars than German cars.
Although American cars are pretty close to German and Italian cars.

Also youre right that the reliability today isnt as good as it was in the past.
Especially because there is too much electronic in it.
You know I love electronic "gadgets" in a car, but the more electronic the more can go wrong...

oh and btw not my dad has a good taste in cars. I told him to get most of his cars.
And as I said I owned a few cars too.
my baby was an '07 SL 65 AMG...it has the best engine that is produced in sereies...
6.5l V12 biturbo
612 hp
over 1.000Nm (regulated to 1.000 because no car nor driver can handle more)
runs over 200 mph

yeah but now where I lost everything I have not a single car....Not even a wreck old Golf ;)

Today, we live sadly in a society of mass consumerism. Things aren't made to last because if they would last too long the manufacturer would be indebtted and therefore not sell not new products.
In a car all what I need is a/c, power seats, power windows, fast power steering ratio (2 and 3/4 turns to turn the wheels lock to lock), heavy duty suspension with heavy duty sway bars, heavy duty manual tranmission (like a muncie m21 or m22, or a ford toploader or a mopar a833), heavy duty brakes and a big block. That is why I prefer to drive a good old big brute muscle car or land yacht that gives me real sensations of driving. Everytime I went and go to visit my uncle in Lausanne, I never miss an opportunity to drive his 1969 charger r/t.
I am really disliking such electronic assistance or gadgets like ESP, sequential gearboxes and gps. In engines, I prefer carburetted engines though I do like some EFI engines but the carburettor is very simple to fix and replace which is why I like it more than the EFI.
To be honest with you, I use my parents car sometimes but I didn't buy a car in France because insurance and petrol are extremely expensive plus public transportation is less stressful. Also all the shops and other good places are not far from where I live (less than 10 minutes).

I have a reason to love Germany: Oktoberfest!
