Scottish Football - Rangers edge past Forfar

Rangers just about made amends for their League Cup exit at the hands of Forfar the last time the two sides met by scraping a 1-0 victory in their Scottish League One meeting at Station Park.
The Light Blues were sent crashing out of the cup after extra-time on the previous visit to this ground but at least avoided defeat on this occasion thanks to a first-half strike from Andy Little.
The performance overall left a lot to be desired but did allow the Glasgow giants to maintain their 100 per cent league start to the season.
Rangers were boosted by the news that Lee Wallace was ****** fit to start but fellow injury concern Lewis Macleod failed to make the squad.
The club were still under a transfer embargo when the sides met in the cup last month and, with Ally McCoist now free to select from his entire squad, seven of their new signings started.
But, despite the mass changes in personnel, Rangers looked no more convincing for the majority of this match.
In fact, Forfar were the more dangerous side at the outset and some decent play down the left flank by Dale Hilson provided an early chance for Omar Kader, which he screwed over.
There was slight concern for the visitors when Lee McCulloch stayed down after making a timely block to prevent Chris Templeman from unleashing a shot, but the skipper was able to continue after treatment.
It was McCulloch who could have grabbed the opener when he met Arnold Peralta's corner and his effort was hooked to safety by former Rangers man Marvin Andrews.
Just as the travelling support were beginning to grow impatient, Rangers took the lead two minutes before the break.
A poor clearance out of defence from Darren Dods fell for David Templeton and he teed up the shot for Little to rifle beyond the grasp of Darren Hill from 10 yards.
Rather than be downhearted at falling behind, Forfar emerged for the second half clearly determined to haul themselves back into the match.
A great, mazy run by Hilson ended with him having a crack at goal and drilling just over the crossbar.
He then found himself clean through on goal and lobbed goalkeeper Cammy Bell only to see the ball fall just wide of the target to the relief of the visitors.
Rangers knew they needed a second goal to ease the pressure and Little turned provider for Jon Daly in front of goal, but he was closed down by the Forfar goalkeeper.
There was another scare for Rangers at the other end when Templeton was called into action to clear a Dods shot off the line as the home side pressed for the equaliser.
Nicky Law could have made the points safe in injury time only for his effort to fizz past the upright, with Rangers finally managing to see out the 90 minutes with the narrow win.

Championship - Lingard revels in dream debut

Jesse Lingard described his full senior debut as "a dream come true" after netting all four goals in Birmingham's 4-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday.
The Manchester United forward only arrived on loan at St Andrew's on Thursday but required little time to settle in as he immediately found his scoring boots, netting a 13-minute first-half hat-trick.
It came on what was his first full start in professional football having not yet featured for United and managed just five substitute appearances during a loan stint at Leicester last term.
"I enjoyed it. It's a dream come true, really," he told Birmingham's official website. "After the first goal my confidence was up and I just wanted to score more goals then.
"I'm glad we got the three points as well in the end which is massive for this club. I know they've haven't got off to the best but obviously I have come here to change that and scoring the goals has got our confidence up.
"I couldn't carry on because I had cramp in the second half. Hopefully I can play against Swansea on Wednesday but if not I'll be looking forward to Reading next weekend."
Manchester United are yet to agree if he can feature for Blues in the Capital One Cup.

Serie A - Sampdoria snatch 2-2 draw at Cagliari, Livorno held

Sampdoria twice came from behind in the dying moments to rescue a 2-2 draw at Cagliari while Chievo Verona recovered from an early setback to win their first Serie A game of the season 2-1 at home to Udinese on Saturday.
Livorno missed the chance to catch the league leaders after a battling goalless draw at Genoa left the promoted side sixth, level on seven points with Juventus, Fiorentina and Inter Milan who all play on Sunday when pacesetters Napoli visit AC Milan.
Fabio Liverani's Genoa moved up a place to 13th with four points after a scrappy affair with few chances although the hosts came closest to scoring in when Emanuele Calaio's point-blank header ****** an incredible late save by Francesco Bardi.
The last-gasp draw earned by Delio Rossi's Sampdoria thanks to Lorenzo De Silvestri's added-time strike left them fourth from bottom on two points while Cagliari stayed ninth with five.
"It was the right result, but it's still annoying going 2-1 down in that situation," said Rossi.
"I didn't like how we started but... in the second half we changed and our courage was awarded," added the coach, who was sent off for his wild celebrations after De Silvestri equalised.
"I ran over there because I wanted to share in the joy with the lads, I didn't mean to offend anyone."
Chievo leapt out of the bottom three up to 13th place after their win, which put them level with Udinese on four points.
Sampdoria went behind to Albin Ekdal's beautifully worked goal in the 26th minute and had to wait until the 89th minute to equalise when Manolo Gabbiadini's shot squeezed through the arms of distraught Cagliari keeper Michael Agazzi.
Daniele Conti's stunning free kick in the first minute of added time put the hosts back in front but Sampdoria defender De Silvestri netted two minutes later to salvage a point.
The result gives some breathing space to manager Rossi, who has been under extreme pressure after a poor start to the season that saw them thumped 3-0 in the Genoa derby last week.
Chievo gifted a goal to Udinese's Brazilian Maicosuel in the opening minute following a defensive mix-up but hit back with a smart 13th-minute finish by Sergio Pellissier, who raced on to Nicholas Frey's through ball and fired across Ivan Kevala.
A deflected long-range strike from Luca Rigoni in the 40th minute capped off a fine first-half display from Chievo and, although they were under pressure for much of the second period, it proved enough for them to take all three points.

Ligue 1 - Saint Etienne stunned by Toulouse

Saint Etienne missed out on the chance to go top of Ligue 1 when they were stunned 2-1 by Toulouse at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.
The hosts began well enough with Romain Hamouma capitalising on a mistake from Toulouse goalkeeper Ali Ahamada to put Les Verts ahead in the 18th minute.
With Toulouse struggling near the bottom of the table, the writing seemed to be on the wall, but Saint Etienne failed to take advantage of their early lead and squandered a number of chances.
They paid the price for their profligacy when Toulouse struck twice in 12 second-half minutes to snatch an unlikely victory.
Danish striker Martin Braithwaite levelled things up on 63 minutes before Issiaga Sylla struck what proved to be the winner with a quarter of an hour remaining.
Victory for Toulouse - their first of the season - sees them climb to 16th on six points, while Saint Etienne remain in second, a point off leaders Monaco.

Premier League - City thump United in frantic Manchester derby

Premier League, Etihad Stadium – Manchester City 4 (Aguero 16 47, Toure 45+1, Nasri 50) Manchester United 1 (Rooney 87)

Manchester City thumped rivals United 4-1 in an incredible Premier League match at the Etihad Stadium.
A stunning volley from Sergio Aguero got the hosts off to the perfect start before Yaya Toure doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time.
Any hope of a United fightback was dispelled two minutes after the restart when Aguero volleyed in his second before Samir Nasri quickly added a fourth but, to their credit, the visitors steadied themselves and grabbed a late consolation through Wayne Rooney.
The win lifts City up to third in the table with United languishing in eighth.
The hosts started brightly, refusing to allow their rivals any time on the ball, and grabbed an early lead when Aguero adjusted himself to superbly volley home Aleksandar Kolarov’s cross.
Without Robin van Persie, who missed out with a groin strain, United struggled to create any major openings and it was City who scored the second when Toure diverted Alvaro Negredo’s header past David De Gea.
City continued to dominate in the second half and put the game beyond doubt with two quick-fire goals, Aguero volleying home from Negredo’s cutback before Nasri grabbed the fourth after good work from Jesus Navas down the right wing.
United did pull a goal back when Rooney superbly curled his free-kick beyond Joe Hart but the damage was already done as City claimed a famous win.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Vincent Kompany (Manchester City): Won his personal duel with Rooney, led his side from defence and made numerous crucial interceptions. Yaya Toure was a close second.

PLAYER RATINGS

Manchester City: Hart 7, Zabaleta 7, Kompany 9, Nastasic 7, Kolarov 7, Nasri 7, Fernandinho 7, Toure 8, Navas 7, Aguero 8, Negredo 7. Subs: Garcia 6, Milner 6, Dzeko 6.

Manchester United: De Gea 5, Smalling 5, Ferdinand 4, Vidic 5, Evra 4, Valencia 5, Carrick 6, Fellaini 5, Young 5, Rooney 6, Welbeck 5. Subs: Cleverley 6.

I disagree Shitty just got lucky. I was at the game and have to admit the way Smalling & Valencia played first half was abysmal. Roll on the scouse wankers on Wednesday.

Bundesliga - Moenchengladbach go fourth with big win

Borussia Moenchengladbach crushed promoted Eintracht Braunschweig 4-1 on Friday for their third straight home win that lifted them to fourth place in the Bundesliga.
Gladbach, who have lost all three away games this season but have scored 11 goals in their three home wins, took the lead with Oscar Wendt's powerful drive in the 22nd minute before doubling the score through Brazilian Raffael nine minutes later.
Braunschweig pulled a goal back with Mirko Boland connecting to a beautiful Karim Bellarabi effort and cutback in the box and looked aggressive enough for an equaliser.
But their hopes were dashed when Gladbach struck twice in three minutes. Juan Arango was brought down in the box in the 72nd minute and Germany international Max Kruse converted the spot kick before Raffael snatched his second goal of the evening and his third this season in the 75th.
Gladbach move up to fourth on nine points with leaders Borussia Dortmund, on 15, in action against Nuremberg on Saturday.
Braunschweig, back in the Bundesliga after a 28-year absence, are in last place on one point.
Champions Bayern Munich in second place on 13, travel to fellow Champions League competitors Schalke 04 on Saturday.

Bundesliga - Dortmund's winning streak ends at Nuremberg

Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund struggled to a 1-1 draw at Nuremberg on Saturday that ended their perfect start to the season of five straight league wins.
Despite several changes to the team that lost 2-1 at Napoli in the Champions League in midweek, Dortmund, who stay top of the Bundesliga table with 16 points, were initially the better side.
With top striker Robert Lewandowski and midfielder Nuri Sahin on the bench and defender Mats Hummels injured, coach Juergen Klopp brought in youngsters Marvin Duksch and Erik Durm.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 37th minute with a fierce free kick from Marcel Schmelzer.
Nuremberg, who have yet to win this season, grew bolder in the second half and secured an equaliser in the 51st minute with Per Nilsson's close-range effort after Dortmund defenders failed to clear a free kick.
Dortmund pushed forward but failed to carve out a second despite some frantic attacking, and it was Nuremberg who almost grabbed an unexpected winner when Alexander Esswein raced clear but fired over the bar in stoppage time.
Bayer Leverkusen moved up to second place on 15 points, shrugging off their own Champions League defeat to Manchester United, by demolishing Mainz 05 4-1 with two goals from Australian Robbie Kruse.
Leverkusen are one point behind Dortmund and two ahead of third-placed Bayern Munich, who travel to Schalke 04 later on Saturday.
Hamburg, the only team to have played in the Bundesliga every season since its creation in 1963, headed deeper into crisis after losing their northern derby against visitors Werder Bremen 2-0 after a Nils Petersen double.
Hamburg, who sacked coach Thorsten Fink on Monday, dropped to third-from-bottom on four points while Bremen, in ninth place, have nine.
Croat striker Ivica Olic struck once either side of half-time to help Wolfsburg fight back from a goal down and beat Hoffenheim 2-1 to move up to sixth place.

Bundesliga - Bayern catch Dortmund after win at Schalke

Bayern Munich ruthlessly closed the gap at the top of the Bundesliga courtesy of a 4-0 win against Schalke at the Gelsenkirchen.
First-half goals from Mario Mandzukic and Bastian Schweinsteiger were added to by Franck Ribery and Claudio Pizarro in the second-half as the reigning champions capitalised on Borussia Dortmund’s 1-1 draw at Nuremberg earlier in the day.
Schalke had the better of the opening exchanges and could have been in the lead by the time Schweinsteiger powered the European champions into the lead.
First Kevin-Prince Boateng had an effort saved from the edge of the area before Jerome Boateng prevented Adam Szalai from scoring an almost certain goal with a quarter of an hour gone.
Those early chances appeared to jolt Pep Guardiola’s side into action as they scored two quickfire goals to open up a two-goal advantage at the interval.
First Schweinsteiger rose highest to head past Timo Hildebrand from a corner with 21 minutes on the clock before Mandzukic powered a David Alaba cross past the keeper to double the advantage just a minute later.
The visitors played out the first-half with ease as they kept Schalke at arm’s length – with Julian Draxler kept surprisingly quiet.
The second-half turned into a bit of a procession for the Bavarians as they stroked the ball around with ease as the hosts struggled to threaten.
The marauding Alaba then set up the third with 75 minutes gone as he got in behind the home defence and squared for Ribery to bundle the ball over the line from close range.
As Schalke, roared on by a vociferous home support, sought a consolation, Bayern broke to get the fourth with Thomas Mueller setting up fellow substitute Pizarro to slot home.

Bundesliga - Freiburg still without a win after Hertha draw

Freiburg again failed to hang on to a lead in a 1-1 draw at home against Hertha Berlin to remain winless in the league.
Freiburg, who squandered a 2-0 lead against Slovan Liberec in the Europa League on Thursday, took a sixth-minute lead through Admir Mehmedi but Norwegian Per Skjelbred equalised seven minutes before the break.
The hosts, languishing in 17th place on three points after six games, went close to snatching victory but Gelson Fernandes struck the post.
"We did not win against Liberec, nor today," said Freiburg keeper Oliver Baumann. "It is difficult when so many new players come in. It is tough at the moment but we need to keep fighting to get rid of this plague. We need to become more stable."
VfB Stuttgart host Eintracht Frankfurt later on Sunday.
Borussia Dortmund, who drew 1-1 at Nuremberg on Saturday, are top on 16 points, along with Bayern Munich, who crushed Schalke 04 4-0. Bayer Leverkusen are a point behind in third after they demolished Mainz 4-1.

Gareth Bale was denied a home debut after he tweaked a hamstring in the warm-up, with Isco stepping in late on.

Actually it was muscle fatigue in his thigh.

Tottenham Hotspur left it to practically the last kick of the game to beat Cardiff City 1-0 as substitute Lewis Holtby set up Paulinho deep in stoppage time.

That's a lie. Holtby played a one-two with Erik Lamela, and it was the latter that set up Paulinho.

I know that whoever wrote that write-up didn't watch the game anyway because of the ratings. 9 for the goalkeeper is fair because he had so much fucking work to do but how the rest of them earned comparable ratings to the Spurs players is beyond me considering most of them barely touched the ball. Admittedly they had two decent chances in the second half on the break, but we completely dominated them for 45 minutes after having the majority of the first half too. I lost count of how many times Eriksen, Soldado, Townsend and Dembele hit the keeper, and Siggy smashed one against the bar. As we entered injury time I still felt confident we could get the deserved winner. Pat Nevin on commentary said "it would be unfair for either team to lose this game" and I shouted "FUCK OFF, Nevin" much to the amusement of the rest of the room who were watching the derby while I watched Spurs with my headphones on. I also shouted "Fuck you!" when we finally scored. Playing ten behind the ball should be rewarded with nothing. Tactically AVB made the big call and got it right again, bringing on Lamela and then Holtby (in the 89th minute for Eriksen who had a great game) both of whom were instrumental in the goal.

As for the hysterical over-reaction to the derby result, let's remember one thing - City are only three points better off than United, yesterday's three points. We always knew City could ******, my questions are about their defence, and Man U didn't ask those questions yesterday. In context, United may have already dropped points to Chelsea, Liverpool and City.... but City have dropped points to Cardiff and Stoke. I still think United will win the title. City are weak at the back and will drop silly points in games they shouldn't, like their collapses last season at St Marys, White Hart Lane and other places. As for Chelsea, they're toothless. They should have signed a proven goalscorer to play as a hitman. Their goals against Fulham on Saturday came because they'd had all of the ball and ground Fulham down, winning due to their opponents' fatigue rather than attacking prowess. Against better teams with better ball-winners, they won't have that luxury, just like they were beaten by Everton. That team with that performance I don't believe would have beaten Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool or Spurs.

Man United for me have all the ingredients and are just waiting to click. It's a marathon, not a sprint. How many seasons have Man Utd started slow, then kicked on and not lost a game after Christmas? 96-97 comes to mind, losing 5-0 at Newcastle then 6-3 at Southampton in consecutive weeks in the early Autumn. Still won the title.

Enough about that, I'm going to Villa Park tomorrow night. Should be a good game, their best 11 available against Tottenham B. We'll still win.

Liga - Sanchez at the double as Espanyol beat Bilbao

Victor Sanchez scored twice as Espanyol leapfrogged opponents Athletic Bilbao into fifth place with a 3-2 victory.
Javier Aguirre's side took the game to their Basque opponents, pinning them in their own half during the opening 10 minutes – Simao going close with an early free-kick.
Athletic then settled into the match and should have had a penalty when Diego Colotto handled in the penalty area, though the referee waved play on.
Athletic continued to play the better of the football but were soon behind in spectacular fashion.
Sanchez latched onto a lofted ball over the top of the visitors' defence, volleying it over goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz from outside of the penalty area.
The game then began to open up with both sides trading blows, but were unable to find that decisive killer ball.
However, with just two minutes to go in first half, Athletic were level. Benat and Mikel Rico combined well down the left with the latter finding Oscar de Marcos in the penalty area – the winger finding the back of the net from close range.
The two teams emerged for the second half and with just four minutes gone on the clock Sanchez grabbed his second of the game.
A slick passing move opened up the visiting defence as Sanchez raced through on goal to slide the ball past Iraizoz.
The game was soon put to bed as Sergio Garcia headed home from close range despite Iraizoz's best efforts to keep the hosts at bay – pulling off two excellent saves but unable to deny Garcia.
Ibai Gomez scored a late consolation goal with a splendid free kick but it was too little, too late.

Europa League - Shock home defeat for PSV

The opening group stage matches threw up a shock in Eindhoven where PSV, one of five teams in action who have previously won the UEFA Cup or Europa League, were beaten 2-0 by Bulgarian champions Ludogorets Razgrad in Group B.
PSV goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet's misplaced clearance on the hour handed Ludogorets the opening goal in Eindhoven.
Zoet rushed out of his area to clear a long ball but found only Roman Bezjak who stroked it back past him into the empty net.
Phillip Cocu's side conceded a second goal after 74 minutes when Virgil Misidjan put away the rebound after his shot struck a post.
Former Netherlands midfielder Cocu said he had not underestimated the Bulgarians.
"We knew that Ludogorets could play well and would aggressively defend. They are also a team who can create opportunities," he said.
Ludogorets, who won their maiden league title last year and then retained their crown, were competing in the domestic third division only three years ago.
Coach Stoicho Stoev hailed a victory he described as "a historic moment for us.
"We came to Eindhoven with a lot to offer," he said. "But we did not expect to win."
In other matches, Spaniard Jonatan Soriano hit a hat-trick for FC Salzburg as the Austrian league leaders thumped Sweden's Elfsborg 4-0 in Group C.
Substitute Kevin Gameiro's goal lifted twice UEFA Cup winners Sevilla to a 2-1 win at Estoril in Group H and a second-half goal from Brazilian Hernanes secured Lazio three points with a 1-0 home victory over Legia Warsaw in Group J.
Fiorentina eased to a 3-0 win at home to Pacos Ferreira in Group E and Rubin Kazan romped to a 5-2 Group D victory over Maribor in Slovenia.

Europa League - Defoe nets brace as Spurs brush aside Tromso

Europa League Group K, White Hart Lane - Tottenham 3 (Defoe 21, 29, Eriksen 86) Tromso 0

Jermain Defoe scored twice as Tottenham overcame Norwegian minnows Tromso 3-0 in their opening Group K game in the Europa League.
As expected, Tottenham took control of the tie from the opening minutes, dictating the pace of the match and seemingly opening up their opponents at will.
Defoe should have scored after quarter of an hour but soon made up for it as he expertly chipped Tromso keeper Marcus Sahlman following Erik Lamela’s incisive pass.
The England international grabbed his second just nine minutes later – sliding the ball past the onrushing Sahlman – as Spurs effectively wrapped up the tie.
The tempo dropped considerably during the second half with Spurs seemingly content to keep hold of their two-goal advantage.
Summer signing Christian Eriksen came off the bench late on to score the goal of the game and give the Spurs fans something to cheer about in what was a drab second period.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Jermain Defoe (Tottenham):
Although he had a relatively quiet second half, Defoe was the difference between the two sides. His constant movement caused the visitors trouble throughout the match and two smart finishes saw his side claim three points.

PLAYER RATINGS

Tottenham:
Lloris 6, Naughton 6, Dawson 6, Kaboul 6, Rose 7, Dembele 6, Sandro 7, Lamela 6, Holtby 7, Sigurdsson 6, Defoe 8. Subs: Vertonghen 6, Eriksen 7, Paulinho 6.

Tromso: Sahlman 6, Causevic 6, Koppinen 5, Fojut 6, Kristiansen 5, Johansen 5, Bendiksen 5, Moldskred 6, Pritchard 5, Drage 6, Ondrasek 5. Subs: Antonsen 5, Andersen 5, L. Johnsen 6.

Europa League - Swansea outclass woeful Valencia

Europa League Group A, Mestalla Stadium - Valencia 0 Swansea 3 (Bony 14, Michu 58, De Guzman 62)

Swansea made a brilliant start to their Europa League campaign, beating 10-man Valencia 3-0 in the Mestalla.
The Welsh side thoroughly outclassed their opponents, who were hamstrung from the 10th minute after central defender Adil Rami was sent off. Wilfried Bony did well to rob Ever Banega around 40 yards from goal and knocked the ball past Rami, but the Frenchman hauled him down. Bony was through on goal, so the ref pulled out the red card.
And shortly afterwards, they had the lead. On 14 minutes Michu broke into the box on the left and cut it back behind Alex Pozuelo. Bony collected the loose pass to shoot left-footed, and with the help of a slight deflection it eluded past Vicente Guaita in the Valencia goal.
Swansea doubled their advantage 13 minutes after the break. Jonathan De Guzman found Pozuelo around 30 yards from goal, and the winger paused for a crucial second, waiting for Michu to be in just the right position before playing through, and the Spaniard fired a right-footed shot in at the near post.
A few minutes later De Guzman sealed the game with a brilliant free-kick. The Dutchman was brought down by a cynical and needless Banega challenge around 30 yards from goal, and he stepped up to curl the ball superbly right into the top corner.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Jonathan De Guzman (Swansea):
Swansea controlled the game from midfield, and while Pozeulo showed some good tricks and Bony was a constant threat, De Guzman was the man who pulled all the strings. And he capped his performance with an utterly superb free kick to seal the victory.

PLAYER RATINGS

Valencia:
Guaita 5, Barragan 5, Rami 2, Mathieu 4, Guardado 5, Fuego 5, Banega 6, Feghouli 5, Fede 4, Canales 6, Postiga 5. Subs: Costa 4, Pabon 6, Bernat 6.

Swansea: Vorm 6, Rangel 7, Chico Flores 7, Amat 6, Tiendalli 6, de Guzman 8, Canas 7, Pozuelo 7, Dyer 8, Michu 7, Bony 8. Subs: Davies 6, Lamah 6, Shelvey 6.

^^ For anyone confused, those are last Thursday's games.

Players, managers and pundits all complain about "fixture congestion" but I love this time of year when the European competitions are underway, the big guns enter the league cup and they seem to be alternate weeks so lots of the Prem teams are playing twice a week, every week. Sadly it never lasts as a shitty International break comes along and ruins it. Hey ho, here are the fixtures for tonight and tomorrow night.

Tonight :
Aston Villa v Tottenham
Burnley v Nottingham Forest
Hull v Huddersfield
Leicester v Derby
Man City v Wigan
Southampton v Bristol City
Sunderland v Peterborough
Swindon v Chelsea
Watford v Norwich
West Ham v Cardiff
Fulham v Everton

For those that don't mind a bit of second-tier pinball, there is a rather tasty East Midlands derby that should provide a bit of fireworks, but if you're asking where the upsets are going to be - I think newly rudderless Sunderland could go either way. They're in disarray and if morale is still on the floor, Peterborough could pick them off. On the other hand, Di Canio being sacked could actually be a big boost to the players he was not getting along with so they might show up in the mood to play. On the other hand, Norwich are reeling from a string of bad results including pulling a blank at home to Villa, so I expect them to get dumped out by Elton John's boys tonight.

Tomorrow :
Birmingham v Swansea
Man Utd v Liverpool
Newcastle v Leeds
Tranmere v Stoke
West Brom v Arsenal

In previous seasons I might have worried about Swansea being a bit tired for their game away to Birmingham with Jesse Lingard up front - who netted four goals on his Birmingham debut on Saturday - but Laudrup has got a really strong squad now, he can rest a couple from the weekend, play the team that beat Valencia on Thursday and still expect to have enough for them. I might worry about Stoke though, Tranmere have upset the big boys before.

Obviously the talking point here is another round of the most ****-filled rivalry in English football, and the fact that Luis Suarez is finally available again for Liverpool. I know he needs game time now his ban is finished but honestly, I don't think I'd risk him in a game like this. The atmosphere and the opposition both make it a volatile setting and I think certain United players would try and get to him, and I think he'd do something stupid again. They have Sunderland at the weekend, that's a much safer bet.

Speaking of Man United, it's been a while since I broke up the walls of text with some pretty gifs, so here is the prettiest goal from the Manchester derby for those that missed the game.

Right, that's enough from me til I get back from Villa Park. COYS, TTID.

4-0 thumping win for Spurs at Villa tonight. Siggy finally had a rest, as did Kyle Naughton, Hugo Lloris, Christian Eriksen and Roberto Soldado, with Dembele and Michael Dawson only making fleeting appearances off the bench. Lamela and Holtby both had starts after only making cameo appearances on Sunday, JD and Harry Kane up front. Holtby was the MAN tonight, a cheeky float over the defensive line for Defoe to head (yes) the first in first half stoppage time, his corner for Paulinho to stab in at the near post within five minutes of the restart, and a through ball for Defoe to round the keeper in injury time to complete the rout. JD had turned provider a couple of minutes earlier, playing in a returning Nacer Chadli for his first goal for Spurs, after inexplicably being ****** the ball by one of Villa's defenders.

All in all, a better £20 for a night's entertainment I've seldom spent. I even had a celebratory can of Vimto from the burger van on the way back to The Villa Fan's car.

Liga - Atletico Madrid stay perfect, Malaga beat Almeria

Atletico Madrid continued their perfect start to the season courtesy of a 2-1 win against Osasuna.
Diego Costa grabbed a double as the capital club made it six wins from six to sit just behind Barcelona on goal difference.
First, he opened the scoring with 18 minutes on the clock as he fired a Juanfran cross past Andres Fernandez with precision; then the same player doubled the advantage only six minutes later when he rose highest to head a Jorge Koke cross past the keeper.
While Osasuna cut the arrears with 42 minutes gone through a Oriol Riera strike, the result was never really in doubt as the hosts saw the second half out with relative ease.
In fact, Diego Simeone’s men could have added to their advantage had it not been for some wasteful finishing from first Arda Turan and then Emiliano Insua.
In contrast, Almeria are still without a win as they were defeated by Malaga 2-0 at La Rosaleda.
Fernando Tissone and Francisco Portillo got the goals as Malaga’s recovery from a sluggish start begins to gather pace.
Despite being the better side, Bernd Schuster’s men had to wait until the 69th minute to open the scoring, Tissone reacting quickest to a Sergio Sanchez glancing header to poke home at a corner.
Second-half substitute Roque Santa Cruz then provided the assist as Portillo curled home to secure the win that leaves Malaga in seventh place.
Ten-man Real Valladolid held Levante to a 1-1 draw at Estadi Ciutat de Valencia.
Papa Baba Diawara gave the home side the lead on 36 minutes when he swept home from close range but their lead only lasted six minutes as Javi Guerra levelled things up.
Valladolid's left-back Zakarya Bergdich was given his marching orders in the 44th minute for a foul on Jordi Xumetra inside the box but Andreas Ivanschitz’s penalty was saved by Diego Marino.
Despite their numerical advantage, Levante could not ***** the winner and were ****** to settle for a share of the spoils.

AFC Champions League - FC Seoul eye Champions League final after first leg win

FC Seoul took a big step towards the AFC Champions League final by overcoming Esteghlal of Iran 2-0 in the first leg of their last-four clash on a poor pitch in the South Korean capital on Wednesday.
Montenegro forward Dejan Damjanovic put the South Korean champions in front in the 39th minute of a game they dominated, with Go Yo-han adding a second two minutes after halftime.
The second leg will take place in Tehran on Wednesday with the winners advancing to a two-legged final where they are likely to face Chinese champions Guangzhou Evergrande, who won the first leg of their semi-final 4-1 away to Kashiwa Reysol on Wednesday.
Esteghlal beat Thai side Buriram United in the quarter-finals last week and opted to head straight to Korea for the last-four clash rather than return home to Iran.
Despite the long preparation time in Korea, Esteghlal struggled to make their mark on a patchy pitch which was not conducive to flowing football as Seoul dominated from the off with Damjanovic looking dangerous.
The pony-tailed forward inevitably made the breakthrough when he was in the right place to prod home from close range after Esteghlal goalkeeper Madhi Rahmati did well to save a header from one of the Montenegrin's team mates.
It should have been 2-0 seconds later but Colombian striker Mauricio Molina lacked composure and blazed over after Rahmati had raced out to block another Seoul effort.
The Iranians, without defender Khosro Heidari through suspension, started the second period no better and Go was allowed far too much time and space to turn on to his favoured right foot in the area and fire home a low shot.
Esteghlal coach Amir Ghalenoei went to his bench to spark a change in proceedings, hauling off former Aston Villa defender Jlloyd Samuel among others and the visitors came close to snatching a crucial away goal in the final 20 minutes.
The Koreans held firm, however, and will perhaps be disappointed that they did not grab a third goal with Molina again guilty of missing the target, this time with a close-range header in the final minutes.
