To all the people that are stating that the players should be getting the same amount of money (or people that don't think they should be making anything) tell me this. If you were somebody like Reggie Bush or Cam Newton, for example, and were were the direct cause of millions and millions and millions of dollars coming into the university not to mention a highly disproportional reason for your team winning compared to the other players, why the hell should you get only the same amount as a backup punter or maybe not get anything at all?

Because bench players have to show up for practice, just like everybody else. They sacrifice their study time and free time to be part of the team/program, just like everybody else. They're vulnerable to potentially long term injury, just like everybody else. And furthermore, they do all of this strictly for the love of the game, because unlike Cam and Reggie they won't be making a fortune playing pro football.

So keep it equitable in college. The stars will getting their obscene payday soon enough.

If the Aggies to the SEC becomes a reality, shouldn't the Big 12 change its name to "Small 9"?:1orglaugh

So your saying that if you walked into your job tomorrow and found out that you individually were personally responsible for the corporation you are working for making millions and millions and millions of dollars while getting almost nothing yourself, maybe just above the value of minimum wage, (and even then in this situation your compensation doesn't actually cost the company anything.) you would just shrug and continue on?

All this you would do despite the fact that even if you thought of threatening to go somewhere else to get your fair value they could just laugh back in your face because they have colluded with pretty much every other corporation in the world like them that could have a chance of paying you well for what you do while allowing a remotely reasonable chance to advance in your profession, all this while they pretend to care about the integrity of their industry but really don't give a crap about it, all this while they have used their cartel position to make it so there is no other people that can practically enter the industry to compensate you well, all this despite the fact that not only are the managers above you are cashing in big time on your direct value while you risk permanent and both severe chronic and acute injury well above what the average person in his job has to face but independent third parties are cashing in big time on you, all the while you personally bring in huge brand recognition and glory for your company sometimes to the degree as to have it be even in a historical sense to be remembered decades later, all the while your company uses you for the purpose of what amounts to blatant de facto tax evasion, all the while your company tries to use you to pretend to do and pretend to be something it's not and makes you pretend to be something your not to evade not only the law but public perception while it's really in actuality something else so it can make huge amount of money?

Really, you're saying after all that you would just be fine and dandy with the whole situation because maybe if you were lucky and didn't get hurt, or didn't underperform in your last year with them or didn't have some other strange situation happen to you in a few years You Might be able to finally cash out on your value after all that time of them getting to exploit you for their own benefit with little recourse to you?

Somehow I doubt that, and even if for some reason you really did feel that way, I don't think I would have a problem telling the whole system to go to hell and screw itself either and taking what was rightfully mine, if I thought I could reasonably get away with it, when some rich guy or third party wanted to give it to me because they thought I was doing a good job and liked what I did while they benefited from it.

I bet you also don't complain when a backup on special teams in the NFL gets a lot less money than an elite quarterback in it, even though they practice and work just like anybody else does.

All this talk of paying players is completely asinine in my opinion.

Their getting a free education while playing a sport they supposedly enjoy playing. No one twisted their arm to play. These athletes make a choice. If they don't like the terms of the scholarship than don't sign up.

This.

Go to class, appreciate the free education......or get the fuck out. The NFL needs to lower the minimum age to 20, and the kids that wanna get paid and not have to go to school can play in the CFL or AFL for a couple years.

The athletes make their choice because they're being offered money. Therein lies the problem. They aren't demanding money before committing to a school.

If players get paid, top recruits will just get paid more and we're right where we started.

"Choice" implies a realistic choice, which they don't have. The NCAA abuses it's position to milk money of the players. The other lower level leagues don't cut it. If there was some NFL farm system or there was another league that could take them in and pay them well that was anywhere near where NCAA football got to be by having the enormous artificial advantages in the law they have now it might be different, but players don't have that choice.

yup. ive never thought much of the NCAA. i make no secret i think its a money grubbing organization that couldnt care less about the 'student' part of 'student-athlete' How many of these guys who were big money makers for the NCAA i.e. Carmelo Anthony in basketball, were allowed to keep playing with a sub 2 GPA (he couldnt be nominated for the Wooden award because of his GPA). The NCAA loves money, they care nothing for anything else especially education, so the free education goes out the window for these guys, 95% of them dont go for the education they just want a quick path to the Pros, and if taking a few thousand dollars from the school that gives them the best chance to be a Pro is their ticket, they will take the money all the time......corrupt boosters and alums know this and will always jump at the opportunity cause they know the NCAA and uni's are not policing them.

No, athletes have a choice. Whether it's a top university or a university at the bottom, an athlete has an individual choice whether to accept money. End in the end, the athlete has the overall choice whether to accept money or go to a school for a scholarship to receive an education and play a particular sport.

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
OK, boys and girls, the moment we have all been waiting for is almost here!!! The first weekend of college football starts this Thursday with the national TV game being UNLV against Wisconsin on ESPN. There is a full slate of games on both Saturday and Sunday, plus another national game (Miami (FL) at Maryland) on Monday night. What a way for an addict to get a major fix after the long, hot summer!!

Here is the first installment of the weekly "Pick 'Em" competition we have here on Freeones. To make things easy, we'll pick 30 games each week so don't get upset if your school isn't on the list. To kick things off with a "bang", this week's winner gets his (or her) choice of an all-expenses paid weekend at the Motel 6 in Sheboygan with Dirk (bring your own KY!) or a discount coupon worth 10% off any root canal work at your local dentist. Contact me for a list of participating dentists in your area.

Winners in bold and, as usual, results are based strictly on the honor system so please keep track of your own. Here we go....

Jagger, I'm going to poop on the hood of your car. Notre Dame losing at home in the opening game to a nothing team? You smell like the dags on the ass of a Purdue fan.

If they do lose, I'll buy you a case of beer. If they win, you have to declare me awesome.
