So this proves americans do not understand soccer.

Some may not but just because some find it boring doesn't automatically mean it's not understood.

It's is more dynamic than just that. Soccer played at a higher level than we're typically used to seeing it in the U.S. is admittedly more interesting and can be exciting at given moments.

But most Americans have grown up accustomed to other sports which can make soccer appear boring by comparison.

It's a great sport and requires a tremendous amount of skill but the lack of scoring and/or apparent opportunities to score make it just not interesting enough to care about unless maybe it's the US in the World Cup or something.

Americans inclined to watch a sport with not much scoring but involves allot of strategy and inherent skill already gravitate to sports like baseball, hockey and golf.

Let's face it, it's hard to convert people used to scoring to a sport where 0-0 is a good game...err match or whatever.

For starters its football and not fucking Soccer.(Geezs I am bloody tired of clarifying it)

@Topic
There are many reasons.
Not being amongst the best, a format which doesnt allow too many small breaks during the game, a preconceived hatred for the game, inability to fathom the concept of a draw(its not a fucking tie), lack of patience for slow built up plays.

But then who the hell cares?(excpet that sordid golden balls and his stickworm wife).

We are happy with our football and if another part of this world doesnt fancy being in it...then bloody well piss off.

And yes the great Shankly put it out right....its more than a matter of life and death.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GERRAAARRRRRRRRRRDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!

That would be the other problem....soccer..err "football" fans can't even figure out what to call the "bloody" sport.:o All the sports we're used to have one name.

There's soccer fans here in the United States because when the big clubs from Europe come over here to play exhibition matches they usually sellout in 40,000 plus seat stadiums. You can't say that theirs no interest when that happens.

I never said there's no interest. I explained why soccer doesn't have the popularity that other American sports share.

We have real Football
You mean the real football where they play with their hands? :D

I don't understand what is so funny watching reruns and commercial breaks.
There are usually just about ten seconds of action before there is yet another commercial break followed by ten reruns of the last play.

And baseball?
Fat,old men standing on a field and throwing a ball to each other.:sleep:

Well humans seemed to be designed for carrying things with our hands to places we want to get them, not kicking them there.
ten reruns of the last play.
:dunno: It's what happens in exciting sports where the fan wants to see an exciting or interesting play again.

Just keep in mind, our best athletes in the US don't play soccer (or football or whatever). If our best athletes did....:crying:

I truly think that most Americans just don't get the game. There is more to the game than just kicking a ball back and forth. Most people dont understand the little intricacies and the beauty of the game. There is a lot of skill and strategy to the game of soccer. There is a reason it's called "The Beautiful Game".

I think we get that as any sport played at a high level is interesting to watch for most people.

There are just other sports that we've imprinted on which have a bearing on what we find exciting.

Just something for the rest of the world to keep in mind: if we wanted to be great at soccer as a country, we could. If our best athletes didn't pursue other sports and focused on soccer, we would be extremely competitive. Imagine if Kobe, Lebron, A-Rod, Chad Ochocinco, and others had played the sport competitively as a child and pursued it as they got older. Other countries are superior to American teams simply because their best athletes play football.

But the fact remains that soccer is always going to be the fifth most popular sport in this country. As a result, we aren't going to improve as a country in the foreseeable future. It's a vicious cycle. The only way to improve our team is to increase interest in the sport. The only way to do that is to perform better. But we aren't going to improve until people get interested. And they aren't going to get interested in a mediocre team that can't produce better players due to lack of visibility.

Change "kicking" to throwing";and the same can be said of baseball. The difference is that even casual baseball fans like and watch the game.I think the main reason soccer isn't popular in the US is simple:

Marketing.

I do find it funny that so many people have such an issue with the US for not liking soccer.

"fifth"? You have soccer that high? You have it ahead of Golf and even motorsports?

Soccer's popularity in the US is primarily as an activity we send our adolescent and pre teenage daughters to play on Saturdays.

I was being generous, but I guess you're right. NASCAR and the PGA Tour both have better followings than MLS or even the Premiere Leagues in terms of viewership in this country. I suppose that even furthers my point. We'd rather watch left turns than men kicking and chasing a ball...
