Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

We are back to being the champs in international basketball. Have you seen our roster for the London Olympics? I feel sorry for whoever we play. We're going to run them out of the gym

Do you even watch soccer? if you did you'd know that Clint Dempsey became the first American to score a hat trick in the Premier League in Fulham's 5-2 comeback win over Newcastle on Saturday.

Good to hear there is at least one player from America in the Premiership, Fulham is a lower tier team, but good for him. Still Im not going to hold my breath for an American "soccer" star to appear on the world stage anytime soon.

I would hope that America's all star professional Basketball team would always win, why would they ever lose? They get paid tens of millions just to play Bassketball, I would hope they could beat all takers, shouldnt be any surprise, it would be a total disgrace if they ever lost, The game of basketball played in the olympics may be a little different to the jungle ball played in the NBA, but they should be able to easily adapt, they are pros afterall

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

why cant other countries around the world learn our sports?

obviously (as shown above) some do, but why cant some countries make the effort to pick up basketball, baseball, or football as a big time sport? why do they have to be known as "American" sports?

cant the whole world learn to play? instead of soccer balls, cant the UN drop footballs? or baseballs and mitts (and people to teach how to use em? (last bit was a joke)

Why isn't soccer popular in America?

Because it sucks. Two hours of watching people meander around an empty field, bumping into each other and accomplishing very little for their efforts. SNORE!!!! You want Americans to like soccer more? Then liven things up. We Americans dig violence. Maybe arm soccer players with sticks wrapped in barbed wire, or perhaps bury mines in the soccer pitch. Or shorten to field to 1/4 its normal size surrounded by electrified fences. I'd totally watch that shit. :yesyes:

Any other ideas on how to improve soccer? :dunno:

BTW, sorry Hope Solo. I still love you. :) :angels:

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

I wonder if there are any American "soccer" players who play in the European leagues? I wonder if the USA even has the level of coaching required to get a player up to that level of play?

Brad Friedel. Goalkeeper for Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) - Currently lying 3rd in the Premiership.

Clint Dempsey (as Iceman pointed out). And to say Fulham is a lower tier team is a slight on them. They are mid table in the Premiership.
Jermaine Jones currently on load at Blackburn Rovers from Schalke 04
Carlos Bocanegra currently at Scottish Premier side Rangers
Michael Bradley plays for ChievoVerona in Italian Serie A
Tim Howard (Goalkeeper) started at Manchester United, and is currently playing for Everton.

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

The best players play in Europe
American can't be interested into a sport that doesn't havec americans team or american players as #1
This is why they've got Football and Baseball : since non one ele except americans play those sports, they are 100% sure americans will always be #1

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

As others have said, it depends on what you're exposed to or brought up with, I guess. For me it was mainly Rugby League, Rugby Union and Aussie Rules.

Although Soccer was around, it was never as big back then as it is now, actually I can't remember anyone making a big fuss about the World Cup until it was advertised and marketed heavily several years ago (maybe more, can't remember exactly) and suddenly everyone was a big soccer fan.

I don't really like soccer all that much personally, but a lot of my relatives do and are mad West Ham supporters that go on and on about it.

p.s It used to make me laugh when my mother used to confuse rugby (football) with soccer and vice versa.. She still does. ;)

Okay, Americans are stupid idiots too unskilled to play or understand soccer. You ask the question and we gave you the answers. Is that not good enough? Why are some of you folks so fucking desperate to get American approval?

Landon Donovan plays for everton aswell. While Maurice Edu plays for the shame too. Edu had a good world cup and is a great player

There are done really good U.S players. Donovan is a real quality player

Then I could just say. Why can't Americans make an effort to watch football. That statement is ridiculous.

In all honest it doesn't really matter. America and Canada like American sports and the rest of the world like sports like football, tennis, rugby etc. No side needs to learn or watch the other sports. We have our own sprots and it doesn't really need to change as long as each person is happy.

It is really just down to the individual. I know some Americans like football. I also know some people here that like American football or basketball. If you like the sport you watch, then it doesn't matter

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

It seems that all of these "World vs America" threads take on a similar theme; that Americans are fat, stupid, and nationalist. I know people that go out of their way to drink imported beer, watch international sports, and basically reject everything American about their own culture and heritage. Sad, really. But hey, "Why isn't soccer popular in America?" Because we suck at it compared to the rest of the great superior rest of the world. Never mind that we don't invest the same kind of money into it that we put into sports that are popular here. Never mind that our best athletes play other sports. Never mind that the American public just doesn't care about "football". The rest of the world is obviously smarter, in better shape, and more open minded than Americans.

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

Actually Women's football is, apparently, very popular. There seems to be a lot more money in that in the states than there is here in the UK. We always seem to be losing our good female soccer players to the US, where the game is more highly paid than here.

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

One reason I think it's not as huge as it is in Europe is because there isn't enough time to advertise during the game. The only time you would be able to run all the beer commercials and whatnot would be during halftime thats it.

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

It lacks the "big league" atmosphere, really, you know that feeling you get when you go to an NFL, NBA, NHL or major league baseball game? Well, soccer just doesn't even come close.

Besides, who wants to watch a game with a bunch of uniformly sized torsos running back and forth?
It lacks personality and definition.

Third, soccer is a third world preferred game... any mud hut man can play soccer, you can have it!

The truth is, we're spoiled in North America... we only accept the best that pro sports has to offer.

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

God, not this fucking subject again! I am done. I have no response to this other than this semi-rant that I have typed up. Give it a fucking rest! We Americans will not pay nearly as much attention to this sport as we will our other ones. I actually think we are doing a better job at respecting soccer than the rest of the world is doing respecting the sports we pay more attention to.
