Why does the U.S. military overwhelmingly favor republicans?

I've got family that works for a defense contractor - votes Republican because they spend on defense, predictably. In my lifetime, I remember Clinton hosing the military. I really don't recall what Obama did, one way or another, but my sense (no stats) is that military and related folks are motivated by the practical: "what will this guy do to my paycheck"? Not as often, "what will he do to protect us"?

The Air Force and Navy are predominately Liberal, while the Army and Marine Corps (yes I know, USMC is technically a branch of the Navy, but don't tell them that), lean Conservative, at least from my experience with the people I've known.

My dad was in the military during both the Carter and Reagan Administrations and he said the difference was almost night and day when it came to morale in the military between the two. I have siblings who served in Iraq under W and they friggin love him. And none of my family are political. I'm the only one among us who gives a shit about politics. Look at the videos of troops welcoming W and those welcoming Obama. The difference is so stark.

here, I'll do it:

and this is after the whole no weapons of mass destruction thing and thousands of our troops had been killed or maimed by IEDs.

the only bumper sticker I've ever only fucked up my car with (and that's major with me) was a "W" campaign sticker. I love that guy. (don't start, I know). He was the first president I've ever voted for.

just needed to clarify. back to it.
