Why do people like Nascar?

Racing is life... anything else is just waiting.
When it comes to series, I prefer Formula One over everything else. But I like all types of racing and rallying. My uncle bought me a toy formula type car when I was a small child and I've been fascinated by cars and racing ever since. Of the various series within NASCAR, I prefer the truck series over Sprint Cup and Nationwide. But on occasion, I'll watch all of them... especially when they race on the road courses. Road courses, IMO, offer the best test of skill and endurance. And one thing that is unique to NASCAR (and other stock car series) is the short track. If you have a chance to go to only one stock car race, make sure it's a short track and I think you'll have the time of your life.

I used to be a huge NFL and NBA fan. The L.A. Rams was my team and Dr. J. was The Man. But things changed and my taste for stick & ball games (or "sports") waned as strikes, greed, bad behavior and more guys show-boating (instead of being team players) took over. The true "love of sport" is still something that you see in auto racing. It's not across the board. But unlike in most stick & ball sports, in auto racing you'll still find guys who'll (literally) sell the shirt off their backs just to get in a race car one more time. I like that.

Yeah, then somebody could be around a bunch of people they wouldn't like that are also are half drunk while being unable to see the lead cars on the track 9/10 of the time. ;)

Pick your seats carefully. Also pick your tracks carefully. I have been to Bristol, Martinsville, California Speedway, Las Vegas, and Texas. There has never been a problem with seeing the cars at all times and anyone who ever has been shitfaced usually disappears after the start of the race, you ever try and continually climb stairs when your plowed. TV cannot carry over to you the colors, the noise, or just how fast and close those drivers are driving a 3500 lbs car. I always tell anyone who wants to see their first race to go to Vegas because if it turns out the race isn't your thing then fuck it your still in Vegas man.

My son likes the movies Cars and Cars 2, does that mean he'll be a nascar fan?

Call him "Lil Bubba" and see if his eyes light up with joy.

When I go to NASCAR races, I like for my pals to call me Skeeter. I never had a cool nickname as a kid. So better late than never: I think Skeeter is a damn good one!

Thanks for bumping my old thread back up. I've actually tried to get into Nascar a little since I last started this thread. Pretty cool you'll be at the Kansas Speedway this weekend :)

I decided to play fantasy Nascar this year and I have to say I now love the sport. I've matured since I last started this thread, I was a fool. Can't wait for Dover this weekend.

Have fun. Were you lucky enough to book a room? Traffic is a nightmare heading into and out of Dover racing weekends.

I don't follow NASCAR (Formula 1 here) but I get the appeal. Yeah they're driving round and round an oval all day but with the balls-to-the-wall speed they're going and with the field so tightly packed, there's no room for error. That's got to be exhilarating as a driver and damn exciting as a spectator.

Whereas in Formula 1, the circuit winner can finish half a minute ahead or more.

And NASCAR does have a few road courses.
