Full Metal Jacket: not bad, but not great
Saving Private Ryan: spielberg's WW2 fantasy... typical popcorn crap
Apocalypse Now: overrated
Platoon: quite good
Black Hawk Down: didn't bother watching, trailers looked cheesy and "heil america" as hell and it had that annoying as all fuck "SPAAAACE between" song
We Were Soldiers: didn't bother
Casualties of War: sucked
Hamburger Hill: never seen it
Windtalkers: never seen it
The Deer Hunter: great performances, good story, one of the best films ever made. "i love you nicky!" - BAM!

Where is The Sands of Iwo Jima?

don't you mean letters from iwo jima?

also what about thin red line, flags of our fathers, jarhead, three kings, amongs hundreds of other war movies. we should probably narrow down the movies to which war and whether it's more action based or drama based.

No love for Come and See (1985) ? I don't think it's the greatest war movie ever made but I would put it over some of those listed above. Plus a fair few others.

Anyway, I'm going to give it to Apocalypse Now which I find far more interesting than any of the other movies listed above. Not to mention it's probably - in my opinion - the best thing Coppola has ever directed. At the moment Saving Private Ryan seems to be in the lead which is surprising because I found it to be an incredibly dull movie. After the excitement of the beginning the whole story just falls into melodramatic nonsense

If I were to pick a top 3 from that list it would be:

1. Apocalypse Now
2. The Deer Hunter
3. Full Metal Jacket

:hatsoff:

Band of Brother...not really a movie but has to be mentioned.

+1

I've heard the same crew (producers, etc) is doing a 6 episode series about Marines in the Pacific during WW2. Can't wait!!

The oldest film on this list is from what? 1981? Maybe 1979?

Personally I think Paths of Glory to be one of the greatest war films ever made.

And what about The Dirty Dozen?!?!?!?!?

Dirty Dozen is great. But I would have to go with Blackhawk Down for several reasons.
1. It's actual events with actual people and in no way twisted to make a point or server a purpose other than show what happened in Somila.
2. I can realate to it as the other movies are based in WW2 or Vietnam.
3. Nothing aganist the other movies they are great and good, but this is just my opinion.

Paths of Glory is one of my favorite films in any category but since it is anti- war not gonna be popular with some.

And for a great older film that shows the insanity of war also would be the original "All Quiet on the Western Front".It would be my pick for best one.
