I was looking to occupy some of my unemployed time, by trying my hand at modeling. I've built plenty of them in my youth, but I'm looking to practice my weathering skills. I figured 1/48th would be a good compromise between cost/size, and give mea shot at variety, if I want to do a diorama.

ANYHOW.....these are available, or will be. Germany had a few of these beasts. If you dig around this site, there is A LOT of wild stuff, that really existed.

Some years ago there was a small hobby shop in the town next to me run by the proverbial little old man(kinda like me today). You could go there and get almost any type of model you wanted. Planes, ship, cars, stuff from all over. and this was pre internet(think 1980's). Long gone now of course but stuff from Japan, Europe, China and items you never heard of. Not just the standard Monogram, Revell types.

I used to have one of those in my town. I wish it was still here, some things you just need to hold in your hand, before you buy it.

The first models I built when I was a kid was a '67 Chevelle SS and the USS Lexington, they're probably still somewhere at my parents house. We had a model shop beside a cigar shop in the Angelina Mall when I was a kid. That mall is long-gone, but it hung on for a long time after they built a new one across the highway. I preferred the old one, after all the anchor and chain novelty stores moved across the street the old mall kept the old mom & pop merchants and the place was a real sanctuary that never got very busy, some of my favorite memories as child and my early teens.

I got my first taste of models from ZOIDS (anyone remember those?). That got me into those hobby stores, although I never got into the hardcore models.
But I've always appreciated the more "casual" models, especially the snap-on types. I remember going into Japanese Grocery stores and in the "candy" section, they would have all these model kits that were sold as "candy", as they included a stick of gum with them . I guess that's how Kinder Eggs got their strategy.
They had everything from Transformers to Anime characters, and of course, military vehicles. They were easier to get into since they were cheaper than full modelling kits and pretty easy to put together.

I'm looking at those conning towers and thinking how terrifying it must be at the top of them. You're an easy target for any strafing/bombing runs that come close, and even more scary, many of them look like top-heavy jenga blocks or melons standing on toothpics just ready to tumble over with a gust of wind..

Thje pictures i love are the ones where the entire crew is posed on the front of the big battleships and are everywhere. Including standing on the masts and all over the fire control towers. I would wet myself if I was out on thoses masts.

A good reminder of just how many bodies it took to make a well oiled machine work.

Just a quick show of hands, how would a MACHINES OF WAR thread go over? Put them all in one, or start 2 more....LAND, and AIR?

I cant, nor would I deny the Navy's necessity, but I do love me a big old B-52, or an M109 Paladin. Lets face it, death comes from all directions.

As much as I would like a consolidated military thread, I think we should honor Albuquerque and let them keep the skies. It would feel wrong to force them join a new thread.
We could start a "Land" based thread if you think you can keep up the interest, or we can use this as the "catch-all" for anything that doesn't fly.
The admins have the power to change a thread title, so we could always ask them to change it to "Machines of War" or whatever title fits.

I am all right either way. This thread has been a bit of a challange to keep going but that said it seems talk in general is down in volume. Albuquerque and I seem to be the main posters in the Aircraft thread anyway so you might ask him to see what he thinks. I don't remember if he follows this thread or not

I didn't know we had an aircraft thread, I'll have to go through that one.

I guess that just leaves a place to talk about which tank we wish we could drive over our annoying neighbors car.

I love the fact that Hellcat was a name shared by two awesome pieces of American ordnance in WWII.
