US Marine Tells Australian Girls To Cover Up, Offends Nation

I can't stand these self-righteous moral NeoCon hypocrites in our socialized military who think they have a God given right to travel around the world at U.S. taxpayers expense to judge and condemn cultural practices of foreign nations, sheesh!

US Marine Tells Australian Girls To Cover Up, Offends Nation

First Posted: 01- 6-10 10:51 AM | Updated: 01- 6-10 12:34 PM

A letter from a US Marine captain criticizing Australian women's clothing, or lack thereof, has prompted angry rebukes from Aussie men and women.

The trouble began when the marine, named Capt. John Campbell, went on a night out in Darwin, Northern Territory. During this night out, he was shocked at the skimpy clothing being worn by Australian females. Unable to contain his outrage, he wrote a letter to the local newspaper, the Northern Territory News.

"It's about having standards, ladies," he wrote.

"What are standards? Well, it can begin by dressing in a manner that leaves something to the imagination, to say the least."

The letter has provoked nation-wide outrage in a country where a comfortable climate, not to mention a laid-back attitude, permits many to wear as little as they want.

The Northern Territory News reported that it had been flooded with negative responses to the article. They interviewed one girl, a 19-year-old Darwin dancer named Lana Sandic, who said, 'Most Territory girls would say 'Put it where the sun doesn't shine'."

Other responses were even less charitable:

"Another bloody American trying to educate the world," a Nightcliff resident said. "Mate, look at your women in the US - Rosanne (Barr) to Britney (Spears). At least we have a bar to raise."

Another reader wrote: "Leave your opinions in the USA. PS: You didn't vote for Bush by chance?"

As the spat threatened to become an international incident, the US consulate responded that they could not find a serving US Marine with that name in Australia, and Northern Territory News confirmed they had been unable to contact the Marine since the letter had been received, thus furthering the mystery.

Keen to have the final word on the issue, however, the Northern Territory News posted a link to an online gallery called "Beautiful Territory" that shows off some of the more skimpy Aussie fashions. What do you think?

:dunno:

The guy just expressed an opinion. Doesn't appear he was speaking on behalf of Americans nor the Corps.

Not sure what you think makes this man a NeoCon. As a matter of fact, what exactly do you believe a NeoCon is H/R?

In fact, in reading what he wrote there was literally nothing wrong nor disrespectful of his comments.

It's one guy, not a battalion :dunno:
What if the Marine happened to be a conscientious Muslim who spoke out much in the same fashion as Campbell, would we still have a news story on our hands ?

What is Campbell's problem though ? :boobies: :dunno:

He is right in a way, the youth of today may as well be nudists the way they are dressing (or in this case, not dressing) in Australia :D. In saying that, he may not understand our climate, the Northern Territory is very hot.... especially at this time of the year, hence the lack of clothing.

If he's not happy, he can holiday at a cold location where everyone is in layers of clothing :D

Sounds like an imposter.

They should cover up, you hedonistic Australians.

His asinine opinion is ethnocentric and it's very hypocritical for him to judge the values of Australians when he's just a foreigner on their territory.

NeoCons are generic Conservatives like George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfield, Dick Cheney, Joe Lieberman, John McCain, Sarah Palin, the majority of hosts on Fox News and so on. They are intellectually dishonest and treacherous.

Genuine Conservatives are consistent with Conservatism such as Ron Paul, Penn & Teller and Bill Maher and they are the real deal becoz they are consistently Conservative not only in theory but in practice as well

If the letter is authentic and merely expresses a personal opinion I see nothing wrong with it from a mere opinion standpoint.

You still haven't defined what one is but just given examples. Unless you're saying they are simply people who "are intellectually dishonest and treacherous".

That encompasses allot of people of varying political stripes.:dunno:

Not sure about Penn & Teller but Maher is at best a social libertarian and Paul is at best a social and fiscal libertarian from what I've seen.:2 cents:

Although I'm not a Republican or Libertarian, I do agree with many of their political and conservative economic and political theories while I have minor disagreements with some of their other beliefs.

I didn't define it becoz I don't have the time to do so right now but here's a thread that asks what a NeoCon is and posters responses to that question:

According to a genuine conservative Libertarian who I met online told me that Pen & Teller, Bill Maher, and the CATO Institute website are legit sources to learn about conservative Libertarian economic theory

Fair enough.

I know what NeoCons are, what they believe and who are some examples of them. I've just seen in many cases where people throw the expression around as a catch-all for virtually every person to the right of Michael Moore. Even in circumstances that may be generally conservative but have nothing to do with Straussian philosophy.

Those are misnomers IMO.

When I use the term NeoCon, I'm not using it to generalize all Conservatives. I'm not referring to genuine Conservatives who are both intellectually honest and consistent with their Conservative philosophy becoz I agree with most of their views.

NeoCon is a term that I only apply to generic Conservatives who pretend to be Libertarian, Republican, or Independent.

But okay.

As an Australian, I should point out the seriousness of this incident has been really overstated.

I remember reading something about it the other day, but other than that it has barely rated a blip on the radar here, much less an "international incident".

I suspect it is similar to the "KFC advertisement" thing at the moment. Recently here KFC were showing a TV advertisement which had some West Indies cricket supporters being offered some KFC by an Australian cricket supporter. (The West Indies team has been down here playing this summer.)

So reportedly it has become a big deal in the US, since there is apparently some stigma around black people and fried chicken over there. And like the article above, people are saying it could cause an "international incident".

Similarly, I suspect it is also being overstated. (Have many people in the US heard much about that?)

(*Note: Even though I signed up to this board quite some time ago, I think this might be my first actual post. So I also wanted to add that I am not signing up just to reply to the above article - which would make it appear like I am one of the "angry rebuking Aussie men".)

Hmmmm...no one by that name serving in the US Military in the area.
Unable to locate the writer.

Fucking douche. I thought we were rid of you and your craptacularly shitty posts. Move on to another topic besides trying to bait people into political, or in this case moral, arguments because there are no winners in a debate where one side articulates clearly and without animosity a position you disagree with.

Then when you disagree you behave like my four year old niece and clap your hands over your ears or over your eyes so you don't have to hear or see the responses that differ from your own opinion. "La la la la la. I'm not listening."

Seriously, are you a four year old girl?

The letter that the guy wrote to the paper is rather obnoxious, and the guy sounds like a major-league asshole - regardless of what country he might be from or whether he's in the military or not....

(Although it is funny that the US military is fighting the oppressive Taliban, and I've read/heard so many argument against the Taliban for making their women "cover up" - if he doesn't like the scantily-clad ladies, maybe he should go to Afghanistan...)

Although different in other ways Australia and New Zealand share a casual open sexual culture. Most women bang like a shithouse door in a gale. One night stands and sex on the first date are common. It's hard to find a virgin beyond a certain age. Men and women seem content with each other. Men treat women well, are kind, chivalrous, respectful (and grateful). Religions are well-behaved and tolerant. Domestic violence and divorce rates are low. Serial monogamy prevails with age. Comprehensive early sex education translates into low STD and pregnancy rates. Paradise in the South Pacific. Better than the fuck-up that sex is in the US.

ive been to Darwin and im telling you it is the biggest shithole in australia, the only descent thing their was if you go right down south you get to see uluru and ayers rock.
go to queensland its a million times better.
