U.S. talk show host who used the 'N' word 11 times to a black caller on the air quits

Re: U.S. talk show host who used the 'N' word 11 times to a black caller on the air q

How in the sam fucking hell would I come up with a story like this?

Freudian slip? I never accused you of contriving the story. You said it was told to you.

D saw him after leaving a store and the guy had a bag on his arm (he did get the bag but there was not much in there) after a little of pulling on it and trying to pull him off he let the bag go, then sped off. Have you ever ridden a bike - a nice one like a Giant? Giants get up real quick but D is a little bigger anyway so it's not far fetched at all.

 But...uh, never mind. Okay BS Scott. That makes more sense now.:1orglaugh

the word itself has many connotations stemming from it's originally intended use which was a acknowledgment of black inferiority...to say that there is nothing wrong with the word is to pretend there is no history to the word however using the word in conversation (particularly one about the word itself) is perfectly understandable and saying the n-word is downright silly...your 'i want to use the word cuz i want to' bit on the other hand does sound a bit temper tantrumish tho :D

So, your use of the term 'n-word', which directly references the word '******', is somehow ok? But using the word '******' itself is not ok?

People are allowed to blatantly reference the word '******', but we're not allowed to just say the word itself? Why? Because of the history involved? Well, we'd better stop saying Hitler, the Holocaust, slavery, rape, labor camp, chink, religion, God, Pearl Harbor and September 11th then, because those are all things that have a horrible history associated with them. We can reference those things if we want by beating around the bush, but man in the sky forbid we say those things directly.

Yeah, THAT makes sense.

None of her first amendment rights were violated. She is claiming that happened, but people are allowed to react any way they wish to her words. The government didn't come in to silence her. She just couldn't handle the backlash and wants to hide behind made up charges that the First Amendment is being abused; because that is a much bigger headline grabber than old woman can't stand the heat.

If I say " I never use the word ****** because I feel its wrong"
or " I think people use the word ****** too much", " I hate the word ******"
or " nobody should call someone ******" is it racist of me?

does saying those sentences make me racist?

I invite everyone to please answer the question, i'll even rep you for it, regardless.
Simple yes or no please.

Thats an easy one Mr P.The answer is no using the word that way would be anti racism and no one I think would take issue with you over it.As in any word it's all about context. When this doctor used it and then went on to say that basically blacks should get over being offended by it she was clearly being insensitive to how they felt and being racist and now has to suffer the fallout of negative public opinion for doing such.No ones rights were denied, she had the right to say what she said and people have the right to go after her for saying it as garyclone in the post above yours very correctly pointed out.

Others may or may not have the stones (get it? :D ),but I'll bite:

1. No
2. No
3. No
4. No

It may be gratuitous, but not racist.

IMHO.

Yet Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock continue to make a lot of money with that word by calling it a comedy routine. And the audience just eats it up with laughter and clapping of approval.

They are black.

Your aloud to be sarcastic about yourself but when someone else says negative things toward you are you not offended?

thanks for answering elwood.

friday, the caller wasn't offended by her meaning, it was her saying the word.
the press didn't demonize her for her meaning, it was her saying the word.
most people aren't labeling her point as racist, it was her saying the word.....
And why? like the caller said, its because she's white.

personally, regarding the conversation, i do agree with her first point she made to the caller about " what do black people think ?" is not racist, maybe ignorant or stupid but not racist, just let it go.
her second point that she began to make but never really finished because of the callers reaction to the word, i'm really not sure where she was going with it.
I think her point was " why is there only outrage or offensiveness taken when whites say the word and not blacks?"
its a legitimate question,
which again is not racist, perhaps the contrary.

also i think the caller was full of shit anyway.
c'mon, white folks are gonna use the word in front of her and her husband?
I really doubt it.
how often does that happen?
i think she was just blowin smoke up dr laura's ass there.

Personally I don't think a word alone can be racist. Just saying those sentences doesn't make you a racist. People say things in the heat of anger that they would never say otherwise. I think the use of that word is just an issue of respecting your audience. If the audience can handle it, use it; if it cannot, don't. Just be respectful.

perhaps i was unclear, i meant that saying the n-word is fucking retarded when discussing the word ******. however, pretending that ****** means nothing, or that any word attached to horrid parts of history is meaningless, is equally idiotic.

Re: U.S. talk show host who used the 'N' word 11 times to a black caller on the air q

As far as the so-called "double standard", that's bunk. Look at how many times people like Howard Stern or Gilbert Gottfried "got away" with saying "******" as part of their comedy. Or Lisa Lampinelli. And listen to the shit that Nick DiPaolo says in his act. How about Sarah Silverman and The Family Guy? Go watch some of the Comedy Central Roasts and watch all the racist shit the comedians "get way" with.

You forgot South Park

so far, sarah palin has offered the good doctor the best advice via twitter with "don't retreat...reload!" any guesses what she'd be reloading?

Although he's kinda stupid, it's kinda funny:

Artie Lange's routine was pretty funny too:

Both of these are hilarious! I guess when it is used in the name of comedy no one really gets offended, most of the time anyway. Even Sinbad said that he thought Micheal Richards was branching off into some sort of joke when he went off and started saying it in that now infamous comedy routine. Then came the bit about hanging in trees and well....yeah.

Does saying those sentences make you a racist? No, absolutely not.

Unfortunately, that's not how a lot of people in this country look at it though. Instead of looking at the whole picture and taking the words that people say as they were obviously meant to be heard, they will take them out of context for no good reason at all - almost as if they are looking for something to get angry about. For example:

This is what you said -

"I never use the word ****** because I feel its wrong"
"I think people use the word ****** too much"
"I hate the word ******"
"Nobody should call someone ******"

But this is what a lot of people probably hear -

"******"
"******"
"******"
"******"

And, that's exactly what happened to Dr. Laura. People refuse to see the whole picture (the point she was making) and, instead, are focusing on one tiny piece of the puzzle (the word "******").
