This is why every other country should take Norway as an example

Happiness report: Norway is the happiest place on Earth

Norway is the happiest place on Earth, according to a United Nations agency report - toppling neighbour Denmark from the number one position.

The World Happiness Report measures "subjective well-being" - how happy the people are, and why.

Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland and and Finland round out the top five, while the Central African Republic came last.

Western Europe and North America dominated the top of table, with the US and UK at 14th and 19th, respectively.

Countries in sub-Saharan Africa and those hit by conflict have predictably low scores. Syria placed 152 of 155 countries - Yemen and South Sudan, which are facing impending famine, came in at 146 and 147.

The World Happiness Report was released to coincide with the United Nations' International Day of Happiness on 20 March.

It mainly relies on asking a simple, subjective question of more than 1,000 people every year in more than 150 countries.

"Imagine a ladder, with steps numbered from 0 at the bottom to 10 at the top," the question asks.

"The top of the ladder represents the best possible life for you and the bottom of the ladder represents the worst possible life for you. On which step of the ladder would you say you personally feel you stand at this time?"

The average result is the country's score - ranging from Norway's 7.54 to the Central African Republic's 2.69. But the report also tries to analyse statistics to explain why one country is happier than another.

It looks at factors including economic strength (measured in GDP per capita), social support, life expectancy, freedom of choice, generosity, and perceived corruption.

'America's crisis'

This year's report also contains a chapter titled "restoring American happiness", which examines why happiness levels in the United States are falling, despite constantly-increasing economic improvement.
"The United States can and should raise happiness by addressing America's multi-faceted social crisis - rising inequality, corruption, isolation, and distrust - rather than focusing exclusively or even mainly on economic growth," the authors said.
"America's crisis is, in short, a social crisis, not an economic crisis."

Jeffrey Sachs, the director of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, which published the report, said President Donald Trump's policies were likely to make things worse.
"They are all aimed at increasing inequality - tax cuts at the top, throwing people off the healthcare rolls, cutting Meals on Wheels in order to raise military spending. I think everything that has been proposed goes in the wrong direction," he told Reuters.

The report also suggests that professional "white collar" jobs are associated with improved happiness over "blue collar" roles - but that having a job at all is one of the biggest factors.
And while "those in well-paying jobs are happier and more satisfied with their lives", that effect has diminishing returns - "an extra $100 of salary is worth much more to someone at the lower end of the income distribution than someone already earning much more."

The report has been published for the past five years, during which the Nordic countries have consistently dominated the top spots.
The clear dominance of those countries - and Denmark in particular - has encouraged other nations to adopt the Danish concept of "Hygge" - a cultural concept of cosiness and relaxation.

Last year, Norway was also ranked #1 on
- Inequality-Adjusted Human Development Index
- Democracy Index
Among others

Norway has a public universal healthcare system financed by taxes, almost no private schools.
It's a secular country (only about 1 out of 5 Norwegians say they believe in God),

Some might answer "Mind your own fucked up country". I do. I think every country, every governments should look up at Norway as an example. I wish France would look more like Norway. I've always thought that if, for some reason, I had to live France, I would go to one of these scandinavian country (Denmark, Norway, Sweden or Finland) because these countries have the highest quality of life.
If it is not to make people happy, what is the purpose of a government ?

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce Bureau of Economic Analysis The Gentleman from North Carolina resides in a state with a GDP of $495 billion compared to IMF GDP projections of $392 billion for the Norwegian economy, and NC is only the 10th largest state economy in the United States. Pardon me if I'm underwhelmed by the strength of the Viking economic machine.

Johan, grab yourself a flight next week for less than $200. You can then be one of the happiest people in the world.

The purpose of that government is to take half of their income and design what they believe would make them happy. I'd personally prefer to have more money in my pocket to make some of those decisions. I don't consider cars, Levis, steaks, or sunlight as luxury items. Scandinavia is a land of shut-ins. They don't have to be but that way but the way they are taxed and exorbitant cost of living leaves them very little choice.

Not interested. Just as you like America I like France. And I'd like it to look more like Norway

Yeah, you're right, the government takes a big part of people's money. But they use it to design a system in which, if you don't make a lot of money, if you're poor, you can still have a decent life, you can actually live, not just survive. And if you're in the middle class or the wealthy, even after the government took its share, you still have quite much money, enough to live a wealthy life.
A government that really looks up for the poors, who allow them to live a decent live and tries to help them to build a better life for them and their family instead of just providing them with the bare minimum to survive, that sounds good to me.

Having already invented the phrase "Fake News" right here on this board (That's right, one day someone will trace the origin of the term Fake News and trace it to right here. I'm just glad you could all be a part of it.) I now will attempt to coin a new phrase- "Grain of Salt News".
Yes I know it doesn't have the charisma or pizazz of the phrase Fake News, but you never know.
I mean if "talk to the hand" can become household anything can right?

A story like this should be taken for what it's worth, which is not much.
I can picture some idiot going from country to country around the globe asking the question, "How Happy are you?" with a near perfect Forrest Gump accent. Give me a break.
Grain of Salt news, don't miss out, spread it around, make it stick, be a part of history.
Again!

*Grain-of-Salt

and too many syllables. you lost me at "Grain."

I tried to start the phrase "Whack News" as in "that's whack," but it never took off.

Not impressed, those are just averages and don't mean much, look at the total GDP. North Carolina has a stronger economy than Norway and it's the 10th largest state economy in the United States, facts which I posted above, which should make Norway feel rather embarrassed. Hell, California has as big a GDP as your fine fair French GDP, that must sting.

NC : 10.000.000 people
Norway : 5.250.000 people

Off course NC has a bigger total GDP, its population is nearly 2x larger than Norway !
Norway's population is about has big as minnessota's. Minnessota GDP : $330.000.000 ; Norway's GDP : $365.000.000
Norway > USA, suck it up

Norway is 94.2 percent white Norwegian.
Only 5 percent of other races make up their population.
North Carolina is forward thinking with a black population of 22 percent.

Are you implying that the whiter the population the happier they are?

Hmmm

Obviously Norway's success is ill gotten gains.

Never giving other ethnicities a chance of success in their country.

We demand that Norway open their borders immediately so that others can come for a better life.

Minnesota vs Norway is actually a pretty fair comparison, similar size, similar population, similar GDP. If Minnesota declared war on Norway, who do you think would win?

IInteresting how you bring the race issue to the table when I never said anything about race myself.
From someone who used to blame Obama for playing the race card, I find it a little odd...

The country has 848,207 immigrants living in the country at the moment according to statistics from the government published at the beginning of 2016 – 17 per cent of the population.

Most of those who move to Norway are Swedes and people from other parts of the EU. but there is a large proportion - 380,000 - from the Middle East and Africa.

[...]

Over 30,000 immigrants arrived in Norway in the last few months of 2015, compared to 10,000 in total in 2014.

380.000 people from the Middle-East living in Norway. That's more than 7% of the population
Now it's true that there's not many black folks in Norway. Probably because no black slaves were deported from African to Norway and Norway never colonised Africa

Yes.

Ah, fuck it, there's no point trolling this thread. Norway is tiny compared to the United States, both physically and economically, It's a flawed comparison from the get-go. Kind of like Bow Wow chiming in on Twitter about Trump talking smack about his uncle Snoop Lion or whatever Calvin Broadus is going by these days, in the grand scheme of things Bow Wow don't matter, kind of like Norway.

Racism? You can take it that way if you wish but I can't read BC's mind. The fact is that there is very little cultural diversity there. USA has been built as the great melting pot. Norway has a lifestyle of shut-ins. There's nothing to do except ski and lock yourself in with others also locking in. Plus they can't afford to do anything else. I already mentioned their taxes.

While I'm on the tax rant, let me mention that Norway has the 3rd highest agricultural tariffs in the world. They don't grow much of anything there. Bread, mutton, potatoes and cheese is all they can afford. Why not lower those tariffs and offer the people affordable choices at the dinner table? Because if the government does that they lose the money grab at the port. Make the people pay dearly for the most basic of choices. No wonder eating out at a restaurant in Norway costs as much as having a weekend vacation in USA.

X was right. It's pointless getting you off the socialism trail. Everybody should live the same and the government is the best way to regulate that.

The article clearly points out that the US problems are social, not economic. Just for the sake of argument...

The Minnesota Vikings would destroy the Lillehammer Wolf Pack.

Actually pleasantly surprised there's an American football league in Norway.

Go Vålerenga Trolls!

More people, more social problems. Call me when Norway has a significant population.
