Isn't the goal in a war to keep as many of your people alive as possible while eliminating as many of the enemy as possible or to at least get them to stop? I can't really find such a loss of life as either a sign of "badassness" or of military prowess. It's hard to find much positive about it at all.

The Soviet losses were more due to being under-equipped and bad military tactics (i.e. Send 5000 men after a machine-gun and hope that the mental duress of killing so many would cause the machine gunner to put one in his own head) (and that tactic worked) (like twice)

today in every aspect of culture: tv, movies, commercials almost always the men are portrayed as some childlike idiot (at least white men) who cant even think for himself.
While the women are portrayed as the all knowing grand high exhualted pooba's who without them the men would be helpless.

This is not a modern phenomenon. The caveman male vs patient, wise, long suffering female theme goes way back. In our broadcast culure it was evident in old radio and early TV. Think about it. Burns and Allen. The Honeymooners. etc. etc. It's nothing new, it's just more prevalent.

I reread Meester's post and I think he provides the reason for The Honeymooners, Archie Bunker, etc. It was because "men" were in charge and women were submissive and had no power outside the kitchen. The humor of the shows illustrated how "dopey" men really were.

I do think there is a shift in the *presentation* of men in the media. Most men are presented as rough, unsophisticated, farting, tv-watching, serial nappers who are addicted to fast food. It seems like women would rather ignore and make fun of men, and men are too dumb or lazy to care?

I don't know. There is a change happening (maybe because Dubya was a cowboy dope who presented to The World that "heartland, nostalgic values" represent Contemporary America?). I can't put my finger on it exactly...
