I might do a few upside-down cherry-tomatoes on the porch this year - or a few "bag-planters" with crap growing out on all sides.

Re: Official Gardening Thread

how does it work for you? do tell.

Don't know - haven't tried it yet in this climate - did well in Germany when I lived there.

Edit: It's so much dryer here that I'm pretty sure it will be a water-every-day affair - and I get forgetful ;)

I've been doing a little reading about upside down gardening and that might be my ticket. People are cutting holes in the bottom of 5 gallon buckets. Grow the tomatoes from the bottom and herbs on top. Something that size might rip the rail off my deck but it can also be done with 2 liter bottles. They said tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and basil worked real well upside down, but the lettuce, peas and carrots weren’t so successful. Go with medium size tomatoes because large ones are too heavy and may break the vine.

Cherry tomatoes do really well upside down. I did that 2 years ago.

I would do the cherry tomatoes if I had more than one purpose to use them; salads. If those fuckers start pumping out more than I can use then it would be a waste. On a bright note, the garden market across the street from me is under new management and will be reopening soon. Seedlings in just a few weeks (Whoo, Hoo.)

My parsley didn't do as well as I would have liked but do want to bring it back. The problem is I have limited space so I don't know how much a seedling is supposed to yield. Do I just pick the leaves off or snip small branches? Only cut from the top and hope it will bush out? I'd like to get some curly and flat going since it goes into most everything.

Re: Official Gardening Thread

So. This year I'm abandoning all veggies except potatoes and garlic. When I was in the UK in January, I picked up Highland Burgundy Red and Pink Fur Apple seed potatoes as well as a Solent Wight garlic bulb. Honestly, it was hard to choose what kind of seed potato to pick because there had to be over 50 varieties.

I was just in the garden store locally. There are only 3 types of seed potatoes. Mushy, medium, and hard potatoes (one for mash, one for salads, one for boiling). It's absolutely amazing how a country obsessed with spuds only have 3 types (in stores too). I'm really hoping the 2 I brought back from the UK grow ok, should since the climate is about the same here as where I purchased them. My only worry is I'll be in the states for about 3 weeks in May and I'll have to trust the other half to make sure they get water if it's warm and not rainy.

I pulled up the strawberries and planted a few good looking crowns in a big barrel and threw the rest in the compost. They're getting on in age anyways...and I had to make room for the garlic and 10 seed potatoes somewhere!

I'll also get some more herbs in the ground and see if I can't get them to the point of my rosemary, tarragon, mint and catnip. I may plant some more lavender on the sunny side of the garden since I'm slowly trying to get some annuals in there so I don't have to plant much.

In the front of my house I'm going to pull up some tiles and make a little raised bed for the morning glory so it can climb up this ugly grey thing built onto our house to hide it.

That's about it. I know we have quite a few gardeners...what's your plans?
Question. Why would you plant potatoes when they are so inexpensive to just purchase. Even the organic ones or cheap. I could see growing an expensive veg like broccoli, asparagas, etc. or even something you can "can" and use year round but potatoes? Just curious

Re: Official Gardening Thread

Got a call from my sister 2 weeks ago saying she's going to do basil and parsley. She dumped the each packages into a 10" pots!!! "Nooo!!!" I told her that was enough for a plot of land and all she has is a balcony. I had her split the seeds into 2 more pots and her basil has sprouted. Told her to start giving away those seedlings now before they start choking each other. Stubborn bitch is worried about giving away all of her herbs. I'm going up there for Easter to straighten her out and take some home with me.

It snowed again yesterday. When is this shit going to end so I can get my stuff going outside?

With the cost of city water here - nothing in the garden is cheaper than in the supermarket. I garden because I love gardening - there is no way I could justify it in economic terms.

Home grown, sun-ripened tomatoes out of your garden taste like real tomatoes. Most varieties in grocery stores are manipulated to travel and store well. They simply don't taste as good.

Give me a thickly sliced, just picked tomato on toast with some salt and pepper. mmm hmm. Throw on some feta cheese, and my pants will explode.
