I'm not an expert on the joker having been more of a Marvel fan growing up. I didn't get that much into DC comics, but that makes me wonder if they just put that in there because of sloppy continuity by past writers. :dunno:

I think it had more to do with "The Killing Joke". I'm so glad they didn't try to tell a backstory because it made The Joker so much creepier and psychotic.
I haven't seen yet. I will at some point. I will just say that Jack Nicholson is a Joker that cannot be bet.
You might feel differently the minute you see Heath Ledger's performance. He knocked that one out of the park.:hatsoff:

With the exception of next weekend's The Mummy: The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, most of the summer's big openers have already come and gone so the road ahead looks rosy.

It's probably more like 98% love Godfather. 1% hate it. And another 1% is just flat out indifferent towards it. I'm more of the latter.
It also plays into Batman #1 where the Joker made his 1st appearance, and where also, there was no backstory to him. The Joker in that story simply, appeared. Just like in TDK. And Batman suddenly found himself facing a worthy adversary that foes like Dr. Death couldnt really provide.
Actually, come to think of it, the Golden Age Joker was never provided a origin story. He however, is shown to have had a long life. Before the world in which he lived in (Earth-2) was wiped out during the Crisis on Infinite Earths event.
Pre-Crisis (Earth-1) Joker had the "Who's Behind the Red Hood" origin.
And the current Joker (Post-Crisis/New-Earth) Joker enjoys several origins. With Alan Moore's The Killing Joke being the most popular.

Nicholson had a small backstory. He was an ambitious mob goon gunning for the top spot when an accident dropped him into a vat of toxic materials and the makeup protected his skin while showing his true persona.. he was a joker before, he'll be a joker after.
Ledger.. well you can go by what he says, sure. But he does just *appear*. Makes sense but doesnt. Much like the joker himself.

Jack Nicholson's joker.. ehh. Great for the time, but repeat viewings and Heath Ledger make this newest incarnation the new standard.
I liked some other Ledger movies, but I'm not paying homage to his death, nor would I be kissing ass to say he does an excellent, excellent job in this one.

I like both Nicholson and Ledger's performances. They aren't portraying the same character, really. The only similarity is the grin and the name. Nicholson played an actual joker, Ledger played a twisted murderer. They can't really be compared, they're both great.
I find it hilarious that there is probably 1% of the population that doesn't like this film. I'm actually part of the 1% that absolutely hates The Godfather. It's like the universe is making sure there is a balance in the force.
The only people I've heard who don't like TDK are people who feel it's too violent for PG-13, which I actually agree with. PG-13 allows it to reach a mass audience which I wonder if Warner Bros execs went to the MPAA and "cried" about losing Heath and losing all the marketing dollars because of his death and we (they) need a PG-13 rating to have a chance to recover money sniff sniff..little realizing this movie is amazing enough to reign in everybody regardless of the rating...
You're not the only person who hates THe Godfather, darkwarrior. I hate it completely. I hate the whole mobster genre basically. Casino was watchable once...but all the mobster movies are same old same old borefests.
Deano..good grief. Nicholson's Joker is a silly, cartoonish hasbeen compared to this one. Nolan's Joker is the scariest Urban Terrorist I've seen on film...he's the lunatic genius who is actually a genius.
That's not the beginning of the film? That's the intro of Harvey Dent, the DA who's *supposed* to be an ideal "hero." Wouldn't a hero be able to disarm a shitbird and knock him out like that? I thought that was a pretty cool scene actually.
The beginning of The Dark Knight is pure cinematic genius. The Bank Robbery orchestrated in a way which introduces us to the Joker and shows us how a disturbed mind thinks....Nolan said he would not do an "origins" story with the Joker. He would just "bring him out." "Batman Begins" was an origins story.
It really sucks knowing that there wont be another Ledger Joker in any other movies. They switched out Rachael Dawes very well but whoever they get to play the Joker next (if they even decide to put him in the next) had better be up to par with this one and hopefully better!

Thats the one, I thought Maggie Gyllenhall was mych better than her and IMO better looking.
Maggie Gyllenhall was a substantial upgrade over Katie Holmes, who was the only weak link in Batman Begins. Holmes was just too young looking for that role. Besides, Maggie is much hotter.
Maggie Gyllenhaal is a total dog. Katie holmes is no prize winner either but she is slightly more attractive than Maggie Gyllenhaal.
