who are your metal bands of today?

When you were listening to Metallica in the 80's, do you remember what those oldfags sounded like when they said, "this shit sucks, you need to listen to REAL music....like Blue Oyster Cult, BTO, and Bob Seger!"

well, now thats you - the oldfag

Metallica has sold over 100 000 000 albums.

Nice comparison.

That's what happens when you sell your soul for an ounce of Old Holborn though. They would never have reached half of the sales they have if they stuck to Metal. But they would have remained respected among the fans that made then what they are. The ones that put them on the map.

Oh, and I had never heard of Metallica in the 80's.

Anyways, these are actually my personal 4 fav bands of all time. At one time, i would have said Metallica was my fav, but with crap like Load, reload, and St. Anger, i can't. That said I love Death Magnetic!!

But, my fac of the four is Megadeth. Then Metallica, then Slayer, then Anthrax. Thrash metal is THE best kind of metal!!!

The best songs on Enemy of God are:

Voices of the Dead. Enemy of God. Impossible Brutality.

Acknowledging the whole concept of 'selling out' is infinitely more lame and dated than actually 'selling out'. :2 cents:

oh, I see....you're from Europe, which would explain why you think they're relevant.

Like The Rolling Stones and The Who are "relevant" ....uh...because they're still touring or something.

The last time any of those four bands were spearheading their genre or had mass appeal, was when the black album hit. Which also marked the last worthwhile contribution that Metallica had.

You really are clueless. Metallica can sell out ANY ARENA anywhere on the planet at any time. There are FEW bands that can do that. As far as great material, most artists release their best stuff early in their careers (Prince, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc.)

Am I living in a time warp? Okay don't answer that... Hehe. :) ;)

But c'mon - make it interesting. Add two groups....

The first group:

Bruce Dickinson, lead vocals
Adrian Smith, rhythm and lead guitar
Dave Murray, backing vocals and lead guitar
Steve Harris, backing vocals, and bass guitar
Janick Gers, backing vocals, lead guitar
Michael McBrain, drums and percussion

aka Iron Maiden :dunno:

The second group

Lemmy Kilmister, lead vocals and bass guitar
Phil Campbell, lead guitar
Mikkey Dee, drums and percussion

aka Mötorhead :dunno:

It's already been covered why they're called the big 4...Sorry while Maiden and Motorhead are killer, they're not thrash.

It's a tough call for me between Metallica and Slayer.

Although it's true that Load, ReLoad, and St. Anger sucked, only a fool would deny that Metallica is one of the most influential bands in metal history, ranking alongside other Metal pioneers like Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden. Kill 'Em All was the first full-length thrash metal album ever released, and many people consider Master of Puppets to be the greatest heavy metal album ever made. Ride the Lightning and Justice are also outstanding albums.

Slayer has never released a bad album, although for a couple of albums they did incorporate some nu metal elements into their music. At the time of its release in 1986 Reign in Blood was called "the heaviest album ever made" by Kerrang Magazine and remains of the greatest metal albums ever recorded. With its lyrics about Nazis, insanity, violence, and death the album was also a major source of inspiration for many early death metal musicians. Another heavy metal classic by Slayer is Seasons in the Abyss, and many fans consider it to be even better than Reign in Blood.

It's a tough choice, but I'm going to have to pick Metallica based on how incredible their first four albums are.
