Sponsor Of Bill Requiring Drug Testing - Welfare Recipients, Arrested For DUI

Kip Smith, a Republican state congressman from Georgia and sponsor of a bill that would have submitted all welfare recipients to random drug testing, was arrested Friday night for driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to a police report, Smith first blew a .091, and later a .100 and a .099, all above the legal limit of .08. He also failed a "walk-and-turn" test and a "one-leg-stand" field sobriety test.

As Think Progress points out, Smith is a sponsor of a bill that would implement random yearly drug testing for welfare recipients. According to the bill, anyone who failed such test would be cut off from public assistance. In response to this proposal, Democratic state Rep. Scott Holcomb submitted legislation that would instead require all state lawmakers to undergo random drug testing.

Why are repubs such a bunch of hypocrites? They are continuously getting busted for the exact things that they rail against. They're relentless. It's just like their attitudes toward gays. Want to spot the gay Republican? Find the one that won't shut up about gay marriage, rights, etc.

They should pass both laws. I dont want my politicans on drugs, and a lot of welfare would be cut if they had drug testing. It would be expensive though. As for the DUI, my dad was an elected official at the state level who was arrested for a DUI many years ago. He ended up losing the next election, but after rehab and being completly sober since a week after the DUI, he was lucky enough to be elected back. Hes a democrat, and of course the republicans still will bring up his DUI. Of course they refuse to mention that he turned his life around and has been sober for 10years, they just point out that hes gotten a DUI and put the public in danger. Everyone makes mistakes, but both sides target the other sides flaws amd mistakes without giving any credit. Its how politics is, and thats why we have such an unproductive government.

Normally I'm against such fuckin nonsense. Random drug testing is total bullshit as it encroaches on our private lives. However in the case of me, mr taxpayer, paying for some dead beat worthless piece of shit to sit on his or her ass, then fuck yes, test em! As for the politicians...don't test them. :rant:Last year I was at a gas station near the ghettoish area of town. The lady in front of me had a whole fuck load of food, chips, pop, bread, milk, etc... Looked like she was buying her weekly groceries there. Using food stamps. I guess they take them there, whatever. This bitch tells the lady she's with that she needs to stop and pick up some weed on her way home. I about punched this fuckin cunt in the back of her head! I have to pay for your food because what little money you do manage to have, from child support no doubt, you run out and buy drugs? FUCK YOU!!! The bottle of pop I had in my hand was thrown against the wall and I about broke the door off the hinges on my way out the door. I have no problem with weed but the way some people blatantly abuse the system disgusts me to no end. With random drug testing, uh oh, now how you gonna eat bitch? The guy may be a hypocrite, but that doesn't mean the bill is a bad idea. We need to get rid of the drug using leaches who overpopulate the welfare roles. If we could do that, there would be far more money available for the people who truly deserve help.

When I was in the Army, I went toe-to-toe with a Colonel (I was a Corporal) because he wanted to inspect the barracks. No problem with that but, he wanted all of us in Class A uniforms. I said fine, everyone dresses in Class A's, including those not living in the barracks. He tried to make me back down and I stood my ground and kept looking him straight in the eye. We were dressed in BDU's for the inspection.

Government employees all take our tax dollars too, right up to the President. If welfare recipients have to pass drug tests, so should every single government employee, including the President. If one citizen is forced to give evidence against themselves, all citizens should be forced to. Every single person that is subsidized by the government should face this policy.

I think drug testing should be required. I'm sure it's an exaggerated stereotype that a majority of people on welfare are taking drugs but still, I'd rather have it. But drinking alcohol is not illegal and he isn't on welfare but he did perform an illegal act. I really don't see any connection to this and the bill he's supporting.

I believe drinking and driving is stupid and should definitely remain illegal and yes, I have gotten a DUI before

I disagree with the Politicians not being tested. I have to submit to random drug, AND alcohol testing, because I have what is considered a safety sensitive job...I drive a truck. Think about how sensitive a Politicians job is. How many deals have been made over 4 martini lunches. Who knows what else they ingest. Personally, all I would like to do, is come home after a long hard day, and smoke half a doobie, but I can't....they drink on the job, and who knows what else. You either test EVERYONE, or no one.

FL tried the testing program & less than 3% of welfare recipients tested positive. (possibly b/c they are struggling to keep a roof over their heads & don;t have expendable income)

First of all people must realize just how many able bodied people in the US are scamming the system.
Then think about where that money comes from.

Personal example: I recently had to stay at a house of a friends. In that house he rents rooms to 3 different guys in their 40's.
They get free money, free drugs and free food from the GOV each month.
Why? not because theyre sick o disabled but because they are drug addicts and acoholics who scammed the system.
They live for free. They fucked up their lives so now other people have to pay for it.
And their lives revolve around getting free food and free drugs and selling them.
Bad enough they live for free but they supplement their incomes by selling the food and drugs that the GOv gives them and somebody had to work for it, but not them.

And this is happening on a huge scale in the US........so yeah, drug test them.

I drive a truck too and I hate randoms or testing if involved in an accident. It pisses me off that I can't get high on the weekends. I don't understand nor do I approve of random drug work place drug testing. It's bullshit and invades my privacy. What I do on my time is my fuckin business! Those who are on welfare either need it or are milking the system and taking advantage of tax payers. Either way the only way to sort them out is to test. As for those who have a job, leave us the fuck alone, unless we cause problems at the work place, there's absolutely no fuckin reason to test us!
