I don't think a sport so one sided should be in the Olympics. Teams are basically playing for bronze. The games aren't even fun to watch. 18-0? Get this out of the Olympics. Until countries can at least compete with Canada/U.S.A (4-3, 5-3 games), leave it out of the Olympics.

No.

Why should females be in the Olympics at all?

Its Men's Hockey that I think is an unfair Olympic sport.

Women's hockey doesn't have the funding or the publicity that men's does...and most men's hockey players come into the Olympics as already established and successful professional players...while other athletes fights scrimp, beg and borrow for funding to train...hell to even get their family's to the games to watch them.

I find Men's Hockey takes away from the spirit of the games...

...and this from a dude who watches hockey.

I think it is still worth having - don't punish the world because two teams dominate. It is still great to have an international women's competition, and there aren't that many. I think they should be in there.

I was watching Canada vs Sweden game the other day. Score was something like 10-0 for Canada but canadians still celebrated every goal like they had just scored overtime winner. That was pretty lame... :dunno:

It's kind of like title IX in college sports. They have men and womens everything else, and to not just have a womens hockey team doesn't make sense. Besides the USA womens hockey team is good, so I'm not complaining.

Well that is just not true. There is no women's ski jumping or nordic combined and a lot in the summer games. It's not like Title IX, it is because of Title IX that the US women do so well.

No.

If you remove womens ice hockey for this reason, you can remove ice hockey for men as well, just as you could have removed the longer distances in speed skating for men, as proven in the links below,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_record_progression_10,000_m_speed_skating_men

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_record_progression_5,000_m_speed_skating_men

(it's always The Netherlands or Norway, with only a few exceptions (sometimes caused by a lane change error :1orglaugh), which have held the records & medals...

& probably lots of other sports, both in the winter & summer olympics.

I say, as long as other countries are fielding teams, go for it. It's not like anyone is making them compete in the Olympics. They chose to get onto the ice knowing that they would most likely be completely outmatched. To me, that shows both good sportsmanship and a desire to improve. You only get better if you play someone better than yourself, afterall.

So let them compete. If it gets to the point that no one except the US and Canada want to put a team together, then cancel it. Until then, give them the opportunity to learn from the best and be Olympians for a day.

The other teams need to get better on an international level before they should make a mochery of the sport. When America and Canada are so dominant it makes the whole sport look bad.

With that said, I don't think it really hurts in the $$$ bracket for the IOC to put them on a sheet of ice, so I would say just keep it.

Then again, it's probably indicative of how much more progressive these countries are in giving women oppurtunity in sport. I always thought Europe was more progressive. :dunno:

Games between other teams than USa and Canada are cool to watch.
Title match USA VS Canada will be interesting. Bronze Medal game will be cool, I wonder who's gonna get it : Finland or Sweden ?
But USA or Canada VS any other team, it's boring 'cause USA and Canada are too strong, it looks like like pro NHL players VS a their 13 years old sons team.

But, if they never compete, against USA and Canada, if they don't have the Olympics as an objective, european teams will never improve...

Hockey is a real sport. Of course Women should participate. We need to remove all the bullshit XGames events. Those are soiling the rep of the Olympics.

Hockey will follow the same trajectory as soccer. Women's soccer was basically not interesting until 1999. Now, it is highly competitive and the quality of soccer on the global level is outstanding.

Just a side note:

The US womens team played a high school boys hockey team from my state and lost. This was not an all star, granted, it's one of the more storied HS hockey teams in the state, but It is kind of funny to say the least. These "young ladies" losing to a bunch of masturbating young high school pervs...:)

In short, I could easily make that women's team if they needed another defenseman (maybe I should get a sex change). :1orglaugh

when only two teams have any shot of winning the gold, it is time to drop the sport. I love hockey and have and will watch women's hockey, but Canada and US are so much better than the rest of the world, it is an exercise in futility to hold the prelim rounds.

The IOC added womens hockey because they wanted more women in the Olympics. They are basically allowing sub par competition (with the exception of Canada/U.S.A and Sweden that one time) for the sake of having more women in the Olympics. It's not right.
