Ryan Braun suspended

Ryan Braun is losing only $3 million out of his $8.5 million annual salary for 65 games only. Take his 2011 National League MVP award away too. Give it to the runnerup, Matt Kemp of the Dodgers.

Braun will mess up again. He is too arrogant and stupid. Hope it is in Spring Training 2014, so we can be done with this prick.

I'm with Mitch Williams you want doping stop go to strike 1 season strike 2 lifetime ban. once you do that it will end quickly

They should make him still work for the Brewers for no pay. He can be the mascot or a janitor then it would actually be a punishment.

Big deal. It's not much of a punishment when you've already got your big contract and will still collect next year. Not much of a deterrent for future players as the benefit of using is much greater than the punishment.

Actually I think for the big time superstars (at least the ones that are smart) being suspended or banned is a deterrent. They got a lot to lose, especially if teams start putting clauses to get money back in these types of situations. It's the new players on the fringe that really have nothing to lose, especially if they can get a contract at all out of it if they stick around.

At least those players, in a way, I can almost sympathize with. If I gave somebody that was a marginal player a choice between using PEDs and maybe getting getting away with it and getting a contract with a major sports team where their families will be taken care of, their children will get good educations, they won't have to worry about affording a good place to live, and they will have a secure future from the money they will be paid, as much as I want the integrity of the sport, a part of my can't help but sympathize with people that would do it under those conditions when the alternative is maybe working at a dead end job for little pay and not knowing what the future will hold for them.

The superstars on the other hand have no excuse other than selfishness and stroking their ego.

The way it is right now I don't think it is a deterrent. Like you mentioned in your post if they start putting in serious clauses like forfeiting a certain percentage of the contract if caught or if MLB grew some balls and actually banned players permanently after say the second time then it might wake some people up. Pete Rose got banned for gambling on baseball and is treated like this giant pariah by MLB when instead this whole thing with PEDs is doing actual damage to the game and they're just treating it with kid gloves. Give it some more time and this whole thing will turn into like it is with cycling where everyone who excels is suspected of being a cheater.

Ball players, like everyone else, want to get richer. Much richer. And sure, 8 million is a lot, and they want a lot more.
Of course, not all of their income comes from their salary. That is where advertising comes into play. Of course, when a guy turns out to be dirty, the advertisers tend to step away. So, it might seem like Braun is only losing three million...but in reality, he is losing a lot more.

I've lost pretty much all faith in professional athletes (excluding hockey players) over the past few years. The only good that will come out of this biogenesis mess is that ARod might finally get tossed for life.

Considering his age he doesn't have much to lose anymore. After the appeals process gets over he might be 39 or 40 by that time. Either way his career is close to over. He doesn't seem to have much left in the tank even if he does come back. It's not like MLB is banning him at the age of 25. It might we why he's willing to fight anything they throw at him instead of settling like Braun did.

A-rod is also trying to come back to a team who is in the playoff race with terrible players at his position. Braun was on a team going nowhere.

He's still owed a shitload of money, plus a bonus for catching Hank on the homerun list. I'd like for him to never receive another penny, as well as have what little is left of his reputation completely destroyed, and have his name go down as one of the most disgraced in sports history. Is that too much to ask, Selig?
