A so-called respected member here recently gave me NEGATIVE 4.5 million reps in what he has called "amusing newbie bashing" earlier in this thread. The member did not leave a comment and has PM disabled.
I asked a moderator if there was something wrong with my post and he confirmed nothing was wrong.
As another poster pointed out, this is equivalent to a flame. My experience proves this it true. In fact negative rep is probably worse than a flame because it has the effect of wiping out the hard work you might have done to build up rep.
It has been suggested that the rep system "means nothing - just ignore it" and that is exactly what I did - until now.
"Reputation" in a regular person's mind means "thanks". When I post or use my knowledge to help someone I don't expect anything other than a thank you - one is enough. Most people get this and use the rep system accordingly.
In the few posts that I have made I had been positive rep'ed twice. In the above case where the member is abusing the system for his own amusement he wiped out all my previous thank you's.
So the lesson here is that the rep system does mean something - it is seen as, and being used as a thank you system by genuine posters. Therefore it can not be ignored.
I agree with the other poster who pointed out that there are good "Thank You" systems on other forums. One word of caution however - I would not call it a "Like" button as this word implies popularity (ie. somebody may be liked because he is funny, not because he knows anything about porn). "Member X was thanked 100 times" means something different to "Member X was liked 100 times".
It's not my board, but considering the topic of the forum, it seems juvenile to be going around collecting "hit points", "bashing newbies" and asking for "bigger avatars". Let us thank people for their quality work, nothing more.
With the so called "high reputation" members admitting to becoming arrogant, abusing the system and discouraging newbies, I would have thought the case would be closed on whether the system should be kept.

You know, I'm really glad you have such strong feelings on this matter, but, like it or not, the talk and funny pictures sections are, by this point, just as much a part of the board as your favourite sections. Some people come here for that, and not as much for the Babes and ID. There's nothing wrong with that.

As far as i can see, the only problem is that the ratios are ridiculously high. I've been here four months and I'm over 6 million.
If you could find a way to keep the proportions, but reset the reps to a lower ratio - so, say, my 6, 198, 874 becomes 61, 988 (i think we can all get by with losing a few tail-end points) - that way reaching a mill becomes a good, laudable target, one that could then be rewarded with special privileges, a prize, a blow job, whatever .....
