>>> Reputation - Should we Reset it?

For the new version of the board, should we reset rep so it has meaning?

What's the point of rep power? I mean what is it's function? Are there any privileges that come with having a higher rep power?

Is there anything funnier (other than some who post) here than the oxymoron of rep power being pointless?:1orglaugh

I really don't give a hoot one way or the other. On a competitor's forum they just have a system where when you like a person's post your name is listed below said post after you "like" it, or something like that. If someone lists a killer gallery you usually see a shitload of people below the post who "approve" of the content.

Like I said, It doesn't matter. Leave it, I suppose. :dunno:

rep is so pointless, especially when members give positive rep and dont leave a comment

whatever happens with the new rep system, it should be mandatory to leave a comment when giving positive rep, just as it is when you give negative rep

no!

I would probably never come back here if rep was reset, the things i've had to do to get rep from people  Although none of the gay stuff PirateKing lowered himself to
:thefinger Jealous much? My rep is legit son.

I just happen to have great taste in music, women, and funny pictures. My social commentary is a knee slapper too. People just love me, especially since I'm a pirate.

I didn't even mention my awesome avatars that just add to my likability. See that one? That's a nonchalant middle finger. It says "I'm a friendly guy, but I also just don't give a fuck. I'm unpredictable except in regards to the fact that I'm always keeping it real".

Excuse me for a second....:rubbel:

Also, your love of talking about yourself in the third person. Huge plus in the rep stakes.:D

Nope. The boss told me no last time I asked. ;)

Not that I want to pry (Well okay I guess I kind of do and have to grudgingly admit I probably am), but if you're allowed to answer and want to is there any reason for that. On the surface it seems strange to care one way or another on a minor issue for somebody that for the most part doesn't interact with the messageboard much anymore (unless this is Roald or somebody else you were talking about and not FreeOnes himself as I was thinking). Is there some function of rep that makes it so it needs to stay? Would it mess up MyFreeOnes points too much if it was done away with now or something similar to that where getting rid of it would cause more problems than it staying?

I like the sound of secret forums .... they sound so, well ... secret.
As long as when we finally get inside them, there is something way more significant than what Geraldo Rivera found many years ago in ... the Al Capone Vault, was it? Or what was it that Geraldo was to open up and reveal mega treasure or something? :rofl2:

I just sent her a threatening PM in which I clearly state all of my misgivings.

She'll know next time.

Or else!

I think you forgot where the submit button is :1orglaugh

Un-ban Vodka? Thats a Bad Idea :nono: Its like opening the Arc of the Covenant or Releasing the Seven Plagues! If we used rep for evil, he whom shall not be named (Baconsalt) may come back

Ask Greg C. He can tell you all about how much rep means, and how much it apparently hurts feelings when one gets bad rep....oh no, bad rep! :surprise: So many little bitches in the world, and not near enough time to slap them all.

Honestly, I've no clue why. :) It's probably because 'most' people seem to enjoy it.

Do you really think if rep had some function beyond a few myFreeOnes points in the beginning (that you can't even lose if you get negative rep) that I'd be so nonchalant about perceived rep issues people bring to me?

No, I think the people got so pissed about my April Fools joke in '08 that they closed their accounts and left the board were just plain silly. :cthulhu: It's a virutual thing that has zero meaning beyond a few actual myFO points that you can easily gain by posting regularly or using the rest of FreeOnes (you know, the non-board part?).

So here's another question to everyone, including those who voted no. What if we replaced rep with the "thank you" system that was mentioned in some post above? I've seen it on other boards, but I'm not a member of a board that actually uses it so I don't know if you keep track of thanks given to you anywhere.

I also came across a plugin for achievements...kind of like you get in the xbox and ps3 games I think. You can get little virtual trophies, ribbons, etc...staff can give out virtual gifts, you can trade them I think, and possibly even "buy" them to give for other people (I may be thinking about another plugin I saw that awards "credits" for things you do on the board).

Given how the system works and the rapid inflation in points that occurs it doesn't really hurt people who have been here for years if they lose it.
When I had 2000 posts I had about 20,000 rep. When I reached 8000 posts I had about 3 million rep. Now I have zero rep power and it feels good man.
You can make the same amount of rep in 10 minutes now compared to what would take months a year earlier. All that work you put in 'earning'(haha) rep early on probably makes up less than 0.1% of your total now if you were around 2-3 years ago.
Shows how useless the actual numbers are.

I should mention that I am open to suggestions about rep alternatives if you've seen them elsewhere. If you could PM me links to boards that use them (even if it's not vBulletin...I might be able to find something similar or have Raymond make it) I can take a look.

Petra,
The achivement idea is great.

What about the Facebook "like" idea? If someone makes a good post, click like. There would be a notification saying 7 people like this post or whatever. It shows appreciation of individual post instead of the member. You could attach achievements to it and reward members who get a post "liked" by x number of people and so forth. This would eliminate boosting completely. It's easy to get a lot of posts "liked" by people, but only truly good posts would get "liked" by lots of people. Ya know what I'm saying? Quality over quantity.

1 post liked by 10 people is a lot harder than it sounds. I have lots of rep but I haven't received more than 4-5 for one post.

You can figure out the rewards. Say, get 10 posts liked 10 times and you can have a sig. Bigger sigs, etc. Maybe a medal/trophy system or something under a members name, indicating what he's accomplished.

Good idea?
