recommend any good horror flicks?

Haven't seen Hostel but the name reminds me of something...which i can't remember.

I'm not sure why nobody mentioned this... it maybe is b/c they didn't see it or something, but "Hostel" is probably one of the best horror movies I ever saw along with "The Hills Have Eyes" I and II are pretty wild. Enjoy!
The thing is that he's asking for scary movies...These are not scary at all.

I saw Ju on and the grudge. Both were not very good. The ghosts in Ju on were just women with white make up.
and what do you think ghosts are suppose to look like? Monsters? CGI ghosts like in these bad american horror movies?

Check out The Eye, its probably the scariest horror movie ever.

Make sure you watch the original "The Entity" sometime soon, I hear there's going to be a remake. Still scares the piss out of me, I think because its supposedly based on true events.

The Legend of Hell House has somewhat dated special effects, but that's a creepy flick, too.

My all-time favorite is The Terror starring Jack Nicholson. Its got it all: a witch, familiars, a scary castle, thunder and lightning, foggy graveyard, crypts, ghosts... :)

I expect them to look like the ghosts in "shutter" and "arang" I will definitely checkout "the eye" Looked pretty good from the trailers

well that's a matter of opinion, as are all things. I didn't find any of the movies that I've seen on here to be scary, including the one's that I mentioned. But I still love horror movies, and I think slasher fits the bill just as much as ghost story, zombie flick, aliens, etc...

Will in a way it is look under the movie title and it Say's Horror. maybe they should change it lol because it was a little scary. :)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365748/

Sorry for been sarcastic here Slowhand but...WOW IMDB says it's a horror then it must be

Good site IMDB but they do get somethings wrong and this is one of them.

If you think that is scary don't watch a proper horror then :D

I wasn't going to do this. But looking at some of the recommendations I feel I better put some actual decent horrors up here. As there are only a couple mentioned. So here are a few...

The Enitiy-This is based on a true story. It's more of a thinking mans horror than a just make you jump type.

Carrie-One scene alone makes this stand out. It comes right at the end of the film. But I won't say what it is, as people who haven't seen this film might do and it will ruin it if I said what it was. But people who have seen it will know what I'm talking about. As I know of no one it didn't get ;)

Salem Lot-The original one and not the remake. It you watch the full mini series of this classic it will keep you enthralled thoughout.

Nightmare on Elm Street-The first was just pure class. A totally new horror when it was made in the fact you could die in your dreams. Which made you die in the outside world too. Freddie also became a star over night too.

Friday the 13th-Also the first one. This has stood the test of time too.

Note that there isn't any modern horrors there. Reason is most of them are forgotten after ten minutes. Because all most horrors do know is focus on getting as much blood and gore on the screen as possible. Leaving the story shallow and with no depth concept.

The only modern horror I can think of that has stood out a little is Jeepers Creepers. This actually had a build up and a nice twist at the end. Which a lot don't have now days. There might be one or two others too. But I don't want to go on for too long.

But did you see Shutter? The Eye? A Tale Of Two Sisters? Ju On? If you don't find these scary, you don't find any movie scary.

I don't think there's anything scary in zombie, slasher flicks... Zombie movies are more about gore and slasher movies are also more about violence and its about human killers, so its not really scary unless you are some paranoiac guy who think he's gonna get killed by a maniac with a chainsaw...But ghost movies are made to be scary! Creepy looking ghosts, creepy sound effects, creepy atmosphere, creepy music and the fact that no one is certain if ghosts exist or not make these movies even more scary.

Anyway, I'm certainly not saying that ghost movies are better than any other genre(my favourite genre is zombie), but only that they are scarier.;)

Its a horror comedy... The fact that there's zombies in the movie makes it a horror movie because the zombie genre comes from the horror genre...Its not scary, but there's zombies and gore, so its a horror comedy.

right. horror just deals with things that are horrible and people that have to face them, not neccesarily scary. I don't find any movie particularly scary. there are a few that are kind of creepy and definetly suspenseful, but I just can't be afraid of sitting in a movie theater watching a screen. but when it comes to reality, well, the odds of me being hacked apart by a maniac compared to moving into a haunted house, getting abducted by aliens, mutating into a strange creature, are much higher... so when I'm in the middle of nowhere does my mind sometimes think 'if I got killed right now woulf anyone ever know?' that can be a bit unsettling, and I think that's the appeal of the slasher flicks. But just like you said, those aren't even my particular favorite and different people have different feelings and hang ups which is why they like different movies. but pretty much everyone likes to see things that are much worse because they make thier boring life seem not so bad in comparison.

which ending, the american or euro version (of the descent)?

I was talking about zombies in the 28 weeks later thread and it totally brought to mind one movie.

check out The Serpent and the Rainbow. a classic.

Zombies doesn't make it a horror. Gore doesn't make it a horror. If this is the case then the Scary Movies are all horrors. Comedy horror is a title I've never been able to work out. A comedy is something that is designed to make you laugh and feel happy. But a horror is supposed to scare you and make you feel frightened. So how can you put these two together it's impossible. You can only have one or the other.

A horror film is intended to frighten, scare, shock. Basically raise the fear in you.

You see that's the problem with most modern day so called horrors. They have no story depth, nothing to grip the viewer. They just seem to be a contest to see who can get the most gore on to the screen. Or they just steel bits out of other movies and patch them together to try to pass it off. Like Saw has done and Scream. If they don't take bits of big Hollywood movies, it's Asian or b-movies.

That's before we even get to the remakes. Which are never going to live up to the original. Especially when they try to move the setting and things. The Fog remake was one of the worst films ever made. Then there was The Wicker Man, moved from the setting in the UK and moved to America. They ripped the hell out of the original script with the dumb things they did. The Hills have Eyes has been mentioned on this thread. The original was fresh and different when it was made and came out. But the remake is a absolute insult to it.

They should all take a look at Hammer House of Horror. They did not only classic films and remade them well. But also did fresh films that kept the right balance between story and gore. This is before we come to the TV series they did. Some of them was classics in their own right.

And PS.
Zombies as I've said before are just funny. They walk that slow a snail could overtake them. Then their only weapon is to bite. This in it's self is easily stopped with a good punch. All zombie films are comedy's. Don't get me wrong I like them. But as a comedy not a horror.

What about romantic comedies?...

Loads of genres get spliced. It is highly possible.

How you can't understand "comedy horror" I have no idea

I would say

Session 9 (Really, really creepy)
Pulse (the orginal Japanese version)
Event Horizon (Kind of on the gory side, but I thought it fit the story, not gore for gore's sake)

I agree with you totally about the Hammer horrors, especially the two Dennis Wheatly horror adaptations that they did-The Devil Rides Out and To the Devil A Daughter. The Quatermass triology are excellent too,but I'm veering off into sci-fi territory now. Other notable Hammers IMO are Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires,Vampire Circus,Plague of the Zombies,Blood From the Mummy's Tomb and Taste the Blood of Dracula.
On the subject of Zombie/Comedy crossovers, I think that two films that work on both levels are Return Of The Living Dead and Braindead. I don't agree that all Zombie movies are funny as Living Dead in the Manchester Morgue and the original Dawn of the Dead are chilling acolyptic nightmares

The Omen (the original and still scary as hell)
The Exorcist
Event Horizon (way scarier than i figured it would have been)
Salem's Lot (Original mini series)
The Shining (even though it butchered the book, still a good scare)
House Of Wax (1953 version of course)
Phantasm
Hellraiser I & II
The Thing (1982)
The Evil Dead
Psycho
