The Presidents Trophy is just a reward for the best REGULAR SEASON RECORD. Fox,you can throw statistics and what went on in the regular season out the window in the playoffs. You either nut up for the 2 months or you're going home. The Stanley Cup is what truly determines the best. Ottawa has been the most dangerous team in the post season and I don't believe for a second Buffalo can handle the style of play that the Sens are capable of bringing night in and night out.The Presidents trophy means you're the best team in the league, i.e., you won the most games all season long, so statistically, you're the best. Now it's head to head elimination, which is a different game entirely, and can all depend on how good you are over a two week stretch. So Buffalo could win it and not be the best in the league (if they weren't), but over the whole season, they were, so if they lose it, they lose with everyone knowing they were this season's best hockey team. But obviously that's not enough to Buffalo because everyone around here is miserable as hell, President's cup or not, being that we are 0-1 down and more importantly, we got played off the ice.
If we can't turn it on in Spring, we don't deserve to be in the showdown for the Cup... but that doesn't take away that we are the NHL's best team, over the course of the whole year, with that many games played, statistics won't lie.

Oh I agree with you. The Sens have been better in the postseason, but what will determine who goes to the cup is purely who is better in the next 3-6 games between the two of them, not what happened in the previous series'.
The best regular season record for me is always going to be the season's best team, because it means that for a prolonged period of time, facing all opponents weak and strong, you won more games than anyone else. The Playoffs are hardly about luck or flashes in the pan, but other factors can weigh heavily such as injuries, fatigue, and coming up against an opponent that is not as good as you, but somehow has your number, or gets the calls their way, or something. In the regular season, those variables go out the window because it's all about longevity and consistency.
Having said that, I'd trade that 1 seed for the 8 seed if it were a guarantee of going to the cup: obviously the cup is the only thing that matters - of course it is. But even if I weren't a native Buffalonian, I'd say that the team who win's the President's is the best team of the year, and if they collapse in the playoffs, even though everyone else will say "bust", I will say, they were still the year's best team, period. In any case - Buffalo will have to play at least 5 times as well as they did to get by the Senators, and you're right - the Sens are DAMN tough to beat and it's going to be trial by fire for our Sabres.
I agree. I think their power play record sucks. The Sabres won't be going anywhere unless they get that "power" play going and stop Ottawa from getting behind the D almost every shift.
Poor Sabres!! Im so happy they lost. Fuck all New York Teams.
The refs robbed the game from us.

i have to agree to some degree. most ny teams are garbage.
Yea ok so if we were better with special teams we'd have a 1-1 tie or even better, but they robbed the first goal from us, and then they gave us two crappy penalties to take us to a 5 on 3 power play, which even the senators announcers said were very harsh, the first one was complete bollocks, and that got the senators back in it. But oh well, if we deserve to play in the Stanley Cup, we'll find a way to win 4 of the next 5 games against them. I'd be the first to admit if the refs GAVE us a game, but they did take this one, at least that had a lot to do with it.
