Obama's Speech Tonight

I have often found myself on the opposite side of issues than Obama, but I must say that the president earned so much respect from me in his speech last night. I was so proud of him and our politicial system and, for the first time in a long time, I felt hopeful for our country. I hope that the divide that has been growing among Americans will finally start to heal, that the politicial parties will find a way to work toward consensus. They will of course disagree, but they can do so without anger. And maybe we all can jump in rain puddles, too. :)

^^Again...the best post in the thread.:)

True. But Jag you aren't naive. You know how this starts....You say something like you said in your OP. Then invariably you'll have those without a shred of a fact come to this thread and start parading nonsensical untruths based on what they feel about the guy. And it's so blatantly easy to refute that people who know the truth are just not going to sit back and allow the tripe to stand.

I mean, sad but true.:dunno:

Duly noted. Hence my post to bring it back to the original theme. In retrospect, I guess it was pretty pointless since it sure didn't take long to degenerate into the mudslinging.

Moments like last night remind me how proud I am to be an American. That's all I was trying to say. If the deaths of those innocent people are at risk of being totally without meaning, let's make sure of it by continuing to argue and accuse each other in a fashion that just widens the divide.

How long ago and meaningless these beautiful words written by Stephen Stills seem to be now in this era of never-ending skepticism, distrust, selfishness and hypocrisy:

We are not helpless, we are men
What lies between us
It can be set aside and ended
Ev'ryday we learn more how to hate
Shut the door
And then we tell ourselves we can't relate
Only to the ones who are the same
Yet even they are diff'rent
And ever so they shall remain
All are strangers, all are friends
All are brothers, brothers
Open up, my friend, and learn to hear
For even lying
When it has nothing you should fear
If you cannot let yourself be known
By anyone
Then you are hiding and not whole
All are strangers, all are friends
All are brothers, brothers
We, your children, we would ask you all
Please do not hide your eyes
And listen when we call
We will whisper, shout or make a scene
We are the answer
For we can live the peace we dream
All are strangers, all are friends
All are brothers, oh yeah, oh yeah
Yes, America's children
Are askin' ev'rybody some questions about how it is
Yes, America's children
Are makin' it hard to look them in the eyes
America's children
Are makin' it hard to live lies, you know, whoa, it is
And America's children
Are diggin' that ev'rywhere children
Are diggin' we live on the earth
We live on the earth, we live on the earth right now
Yes, and it's right on, children of the earth, and it's right on
Children of the earth, and it's right on
Children of the earth and it's right on, right on, yeah
This is what has made our nation free
For life is change
And only blind men cannot see
The new order is upon us now
It is the children
They have the wisdom to be free
All are strangers, all are friends
All are brothers

how about we use our troops to secure our own borders and yes the US is going into serious depression, how many of those troops would be needed to secure the southern border I wonder

That is a bad idea because the military isn't trained to be a police force, that's not their role.

Stop it everyone....just fucking stop it.:mad::mad:

I started this thread in an effort to promote national unity in a time of great shared national tragedy and all you partisans have hijacked it and turned it into yet another "your side sucks" thread. There are already a million of those on this forum so please go argue your incessant finger-pointing divisive self-righteous bullshit on one of them please.

Man we are so fucked....:(:crying::(

I am sorry. Let's a Freeones group hug.

I blame the right.

Complete snoozefest. Get back to work asshole.
Yeah...if he did what you suggest...there would be those babbling about how he didn't even come out to address the situation.
Also WTF with the cheering? Wooooohoooo Arizona U!!! Isn't this supposed to be a funeral?

It wasn't a funeral. However, even with funerals..there is no specific tone it must take. Some choose to mourn a death...others choose to celebrate a life.:2 cents:

'Not Sure'? Exactly.

It was embarrassing. And I am sure.

Bingo. And all the people booing Jan Brewer made me think that it was a heavily Democrat event. Not to mention the odd cheering during what's supposed to be a memorial event.

I wonder how much spending cuts Illinois did (particularly the city of Chicago) to go along with that tax hike? When you are controlled by a political machine, the machine tries to bleed you 9 times before it thinks to cut down on resources devoted to itself.

I didn't watch, but I'm not big on speeches. I was also very disgusted at how the liberals in the media as well as some Democrats tried to pin this on non-liberals not 30 minutes after the shooting. Everything has since been reversed on them and non-liberals have been vindicated. But now the left is using it's sheer force in numbers in the media to disguise all that and say "it's not about party or ideology" where were they 30 minutes after the shooting?

None of this will bring back a 9 year old girl named Christine Taylor Green or the other 5 people that were killed.

Are you aware that we are in an economic depression and have been since 2008? If we bring 150,000 Americans home, where will they work? Do you have a job to give a veteran?

Just want to put this out on the forums: Veterans don't need jobs, they don't need to be taken care of. They need to be shown how to take care of themselves and how to be productive members of society. Way, way, way too much of the after-service contact the government has with veterans is to roll them up in a system where they are dependent on the state for the rest of their lives.

We could cut the number of homeless vets if the military was mandated to enact meaningful separation training. This needs to be taken care of during the separation process, not after a veteran has been discharge and put back into the civilian world.

Almost all the branches of the military do a terrible job of preparing veterans to live independently, that needs to change.

Re: Obama's Speech Tonight

Well, Bush rose to the occasion when he addressed the nation following the horrific events of September 11, 2001 and look how much of a stinker of a potus he ended up being.

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
While I don't think he doesn't care, I think this was viewed by his staff, and advisers, as more of an opportunity for him to get some points back from the American public, and they worked real hard to make him look better then he really is. I think the whole presentation was designed to make him look far more selfless then he is, and I think he's using this tragedy to help his image, much like others will use it, to try and whore their own political agendas.

:cool:Well, the man's duty is to address issues like this. The only way we can know if he will exploit it like GWB did of 9/11 is if he makes this incident his middle name like Bush and Giuliani did.

I highly doubt Obama will be mentioning this even 2 weeks from now let alone 4 years from now like Bush and Giulani were of 9/11 but let's see.

I'll be looking more closely at his actions, then his words. They count for much more, to me. We'll see. In all fairness, Bush was evil...Obama is just conniving.

True. For all of Bush and Guiliani's spouting on 9/11..the effect of it was to get us into Iraq, allow Bush to exceed his constitutional authority in usurping the law and to get re-elected.

But I doubt Obama has ambitions for all that....not even to "take our guns away".

Oh fer cryin' out loud.

This was to have been a silent event...Pres. speaks everyone listens, not cheer like it's a damn ballgame.

Says who? Tirdent? Then if it was, Trident (and others) would be panning it for how lame it was with a lack of empathy, emotion or reaction?

There is nothing wrong with cheering for parts of a speech people approve of....no different from when people cheered GWB for his bullhorn sermon on the mound of WTC.

At least Obama didn't quip jokes like Bush did as he stood on smoldering remains of Americans yet to be recovered from the site.
