I guess you didn't read where Gates gave him his school ID?:dunno:

But the officer still insisted on harassing a 5'7, 150lb, 60 year old greying man ,who is walking on a cane, by calling the Harvard police to come over even after he has given his ID & continuing to question Gates as if though he couldn't possibly belong there.

Obama was right for saying the officer acted 'stupidly' & the DA also thought the officer's arrest was baseless simply because the Professor asked for his name & allegedly blew off steam in his own home.

Man can't speak his mind in his own home without being arrested? As we all know Cops never lie on police reports
What peace was Gates disturbing in his own home? There were no complaints from neighbors.:dunno:

does the school ID show his home address? its a school ID for the school not his state drivers licences that has his address on it.:dunno: So I can break into ANY house and when asked to show ID just show them my military ID and then expect the cops to leave. The cops are not stupid, if the ID did not have an address on it I would have asked for his drivers licences, but that is just me.

Also the cop is just doing his job and this guy calls him a racist. How about I walk in to your place of work when you ask me if I need anything I just respond screaming and yelling and calling you a racist and see how fast I get tossed out.

I just love how people place the race card when it will benefit them. Just another left-wing college professor thinksing he is better than the system.

Dude...read the articles before you post.

He refused to give his ID at first saying "Why? Because I'm a black man?" and then called the cop racist. All of that was before he produced any ID.

The neighbors did complain. It was the frikin' neighbor who called the cops saying someone is breaking into the house next door.

The neighbors didn't complain of someone 'disturbing the peace'(the trumped up charge Gates was arrested for) & Gates actually went & personally thanked the neighbor for looking out for his home.

The point is he gave him his ID ,but the cop still questioned a 5'7 150 hobbling man & then wanted to call someone else over for verification after Gates had given him the ID.:dunno: The cop was angry/vindictive because the guy dared ask for his name & badge number(which the cop refused).

The President & the DA(who immediately threw out the charge) thought the arrest was 'stupid'. Me too.

Disturbing the peace is a crime generally defined as the unsettling of proper order in a public space through one's actions. This can include creating loud noise by fighting or challenging to fight, disturbing others by loud and unreasonable noise (including loud music or dog barking), or using offensive words or insults likely to incite violence.

Sounds like that is exactly what he was doing to the officer

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama said Wednesday that police acted "stupidly" in the arrest of prominent black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. and that despite racial progress blacks and Hispanics are still singled out unfairly for arrest.

"This still haunts us," Obama said.

He is the President of the UNITED STATES, not Black America. This country has turned the coner towards a fate that is going to destroy it.

It's unfortunate that some people feel that America is in its dying days. Personally, I have more faith in the inner strength of the United States of America than that.

A lot of people mistakenly believe that what brought an end to the greatest empire of all time, the Roman Empire, was a bunch of barbarians with painted faces charging through the gates of the city. That's the Hollywood version. No, what actually brought an end to Rome was the lack of will within the Roman people to (truly) be Romans any longer. They lost faith, first in the Republic, and then in the Emperor and the state. If America is as weak as some seem to believe, then we won't be destroyed... we'll just cease to be. But if our Republic is as strong and resilient as I believe it to be (revolution, civil war, world wars, depressions, etc.), then this too shall pass.

The same heat that melts butter, tempers steel. The men and women of my father and mother's generation were made of steel. If the U.S. is now made up of butter, then we will melt. And IMO, that's how it should be. I don't believe in rewarding weakness based on past history or a legacy of (supposed) manifest destiny.

The President was not speaking for Black America nor was the White D.A.(I assume he's White;))who scoffed at the unecessary arrest , but they WERE speaking to common sense.:wave2:

Why all the America 'destruction' hyperbole.:1orglaugh

I whole hearlty agree with you about America's inner strength, but where are we going to get that from. We are rasing a generation of "me" they want everything but are unwilling to do the hard work to achieve such goals.

At the core, it's up to each and every mother and father to raise their children with whatever values they feel are important. And hopefully we don't burden our children with whatever personal prejudices we might have - and that applies to all races, religions and both genders. I believe that our society has deteriorated in some ways and advanced in other ways. But as people lose their sense of personal responsibility, we very well may become weaker. But if we become weaker, we've done it to ourselves. We will have to allow it to happen. No different than the ancient Romans.

The "me" generation(s) has been developing since the end of World War II. Personally and nationally, we have consumed and lived for the moment. IMO, that will be one of the positive things that comes out of this Great Recession: we can no longer use our houses as ATM machines. We can no longer use credit card advance checks like paychecks. Maybe having the latest & greatest of everything, at the expense of having some future reserve savings, isn't such a bright idea. Maybe the CEO that runs his company into the ground won't expect to be paid a bonus, as his company enters Chapter 11. Maybe we'll figure out a way to eliminate, or at least reduce the number of companies that if they fail, they won't pull down our entire economy. Now that we've learned what definitely doesn't work (the creation or fostering of one economic bubble after another), maybe we can have a two (or three!) party solution to some things that will work better.

".....and nothing anybody can say will change my mind."

That about sums it up.

The man demonstrated that he was at his own home. If the cops are protecting and serving then that should have been the end of it. Hilarious to watch all the conservatives who are constantly going on and on about how they just want to be left alone in their homes and not have Big Government intruding, suddenly we get a neck-breaking little switcharoo !!!

I've been locked out of my house before on several occasions and had to "break in." Never had the rollers called on me. Maybe his neighbors had a vendetta against him, I don't know. Fact remains, this looks like a publicity stunt from a publicity whore. At least that's what it looks like to me.

You think he called the police on himself?

I have a hard time figuring out the entire truth on this one. It's just too hard to know the truth considering there are some conflicting reports on what happened. I also don't trust the cops to just take their side of the story. However, from what I have heard it seems like he probably did overreact,...but overreacting isn't against the law. In any case the police are also supposed to be held to a higher standard, they are supposed to be the better person, and the officer probably should have calmed the situation a lot better. Arresting him was pretty unnecessary, especially after they learned that he was indeed the owner of the premises. What does that mean, that he was arrested because essentially some cop got his feeling hurt or was irritated by him? That's unacceptable, even if he was potentially acting like an idiot.

The one and only.
Police followed procedures. The man tried to jimmy the door open so they asked for ID. How does he respond? By refusing and calling them racist. For fuck's sake, not everything needs to be about race. Just show them your driver's license and use some common courtesy. If he does that, we're not reading about this story because the police would have been on their merry way. They don't need to see it because you're black. They need to see it because it looks like you're breaking into a home. What a dick head! He brought this on himself and I have no sympathy for him. I'm not saying he should have been arrested, but he has no one else to blame.

It's really tiring to hear about how America isn't progressing in terms of race. It's a two way street. Blacks have got to stop playing the race card every time something negative happens to them. It can't always be about that.

He did produce ID showing who he is and was arrested anyway. Is that procedure?

What does that even mean “having it both ways?” What “way” was the professor trying to “have it”? He was in the privacy of his own home. Produced an ID, cop made him go out on the porch, and then arrested him for disturbing the peace.

I am not saying the professor wasn’t out of line for yelling but should he get arrested for it? You are extremely naive or dis honest if you think that race had absolutely nothing to do with him being arrested.

your right he showed his College Id, college ID's DO NOT have his home address. All they have is the university name and his picture so that is why harvard police we called as they would have his home address.

He was arrested for disturbing the peace, tell you what go outside and start yelling at random people and when the cops show up call them racist and see how it turns out. you would be arrested for disturbing the peace also. His neighbors actually the right thing and was watching out for his home when he was away from it.

Apparently stupidity comes in all shapes and sizes.

No opinion from me on this one, I know the what law and the circumstances dictate in this situation.
Nuff said!

Terrible comparisons.
Those people are US celebrities and many people are interested in them
Thats why it makes the news.
And what should we expect from A president?
Maybe side with law enforcement? Or at least give no comment until they know what really happened (or in obamas case , decide to know what really happened).

Ok so your a cop and you respond to a possible break in.
you see a guy inside who matches the vague description you have recieved.
He tells you "go away you racist white cop".
What do you do? Just leave?

Oh and I forgot, Boston is full of racist white people, thanks for reminding me.

Dude, you obviously didn't read anything I said. I should have kept away when you wrote "he's racist and nothing you say can change my mind". Basically, this is a rant-post, which is a thread started by the OP for the sole purpose of ranting, rather than discussion. I steer clear of these pointless threads because nothing comes out of it. So I say, good day, sir!

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
You are right.
there isn't a story here.
But then why is it been in the news for 5 days? why is it now the top story? And why is the president getting involved and siding with the man(without even knowing the facts) who was at least by the police report very hostile and disorderly?
I know the answers, do you?

This has been on the news for 5 days? I watch the news almost every day, sometimes twice, and the first I've heard of this was when I saw this thread on FreeOnes.
