police report:
http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/gates_incident_report_redacted.pdf

So the police respond to a possible burglery and the man refuses to come out and answer the door.
Then he starts yelling at the police acting all hostile when all they want and must do is make sure he is ok, not harmed.
If he just answered the door and acted normal everythings ok.

Now even the President who admits he doesn't know the facts is calling the police stupid and strongly implying racism..

THE PRESIDENT???????? Involved in this.
Wow.
I wonder how those cops feel. Seems obvious they were just following procedure and doing there jobs correctly.

This whole piece of garbage is just another democrat media smokescreen designed to take the peoples minds off the real issue while attempting to make whites feel more guilty and blacks more angry.
And here the presidents even promoting it.

seriously, get the fuck out while you still can.

A Cambridge police sergeant in the area in an unmarked cruiser heard the radio call indicating there might be a burglary in progress. He responded.
The woman who had phoned police was standing on the sidewalk. There was no one attempting to get in the house at that time but the front door was open.
The police sergeant to talk to the woman. He then went up on the porch to determine what had happen. He said when he approached the door he could see a black male standing inside. He began to speak with the man, explaining that he was investigating a break-in and asked him if he would step outside.
The man inside refused and said, according to the police report, "Why, because I'm a black man in America?"
The police officer went inside and asked the black male to produce some identification. The man refused to produce any ID and engaged the sergeant in a conversation which quickly escalated into a shouting match in which the black male charged the sergeant with being a racist. "You are a racist cop," he told him.
And the sergeant said, "No sir, we are simply trying to determine what has happened here because we received a call that woman observed someone attempting to break into this house.
Professor Gates, the black man in question, would not cooperate. It was indeed his house but he had refused to identify himself.
As the verbal confrontation with the Cambridge police sergeant escalated, Professor Gates said, "You don't know who you're messing with. You're gonna be in a lotta trouble."
At that point, Gates picked up his cell phone and calls, according to the police report, an unknown, unidentified number and asks, "Can you get me the name of the chief?"
So the sergeant finally asks Professor Gates to step out on the porch because the acoustics in this enclosed space are bad and he's having trouble reporting what's going on his police radio to Cambridge dispatch. He's made them aware. Other police officers have arrived at this point. There are seven civilians out on the sidewalk watching, so Professor Gates and the sergeant walk out on the front porch and once again the sergeant requests identification.
Well, finally, Professor Gates does give the sergeant his Harvard University photo ID. When the sergeant sees the ID, he calls the Cambridge dispatcher asking to have a member of the Harvard University police force sent over to assist him in this matter --clearly, he didn't know who Professor Gates was.
Professor Gates continued to yell that the cop was racist and he starts yelling to the assembled people on the sidewalk, "This is what happens to black men in America. You see how they treat black men in America? You see how he's treating me?"
Throughout this loud verbal confrontation, the police sergeant finally says to Professor Gates, "Sir, if you do not stop shouting and cooperate, I'm going to place you under arrest for disorderly conduct."

THE PRESIDENT???????? Involved in this.

He was asked the question at a press conference and as he says in the video he considers this person a friend what's the big deal, the press know this so it's obviously going to get asked. Now, what would it say if he didn't answer the question?

This whole piece of garbage is just another democrat media smokescreen designed to take the peoples minds off the real issue while attempting to make whites feel more guilty and blacks more angry.

If there's evidence to prove on the contrary, then it is an issue and one in which a president should get involved in. Especially this president.

Isn't this just something to get angry about for the sake of getting angry? There's no real story here and from what I can tell. Obama answered a question at a press conference, I'm sure much more important questions were asked, but I guess his answers to those get shunted for a non-story as always. He admitted he didn't know all the facts and maybe if he reads over what happend he'll change his mind.

I don't see what the big deal is.

You must be really happy now.

But would you think that the story would have happened the same way in the house of a white professor?

I guess not.

This guy was already a racist, trust me. He's about on the same par as Rev. Wright.

I watched a show he did for PBS back in the 90's where he insisted that since Egypt is located in Africa, that means the pharoahs and the people who built the pyramids had to be black and the only reason we think the Egyptians were brown (if we're going to assign colors) is due to the white mans eternal efforts to deny the black man a place in history.

He's a piece of shit in my opinion and I have no problem accepting that he was the one who turned a routine investigation into a volatile racial issue.

You are right.
there isn't a story here.
But then why is it been in the news for 5 days? why is it now the top story? And why is the president getting involved and siding with the man(without even knowing the facts) who was at least by the police report very hostile and disorderly?
I know the answers, do you?

Si if it was his house why would he just not give the officer ID? Some people have to pull that fucking race card whenever they fill like it.

Any story can be in the American news media for 5 days: Britney Spears shaves her head, some Backstreet Boy comes out of the closet, Heath Ledger dies, Anna Nicole Smith dies, etc. are all examples of overhyped stories that would have gotten little to no press coverage in other countries but get huge hype in the U.S.

And like someone pointed out, the President is getting involved with the man because he knows him personally and the news media wants his opinion. The black prof. is a noted scholar so it seems logical that the President would take his side, seeing as he has high respect for him. I'm pretty sure he would have done the same for Tom Wolfe.

That being said, Boston is notoriously (and unfairly) known as being one of the most racist cities in the U.S. after Chicago. An opinion article by the NY Times asked what is the most racist city in the U.S. and Boston kept coming up: http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/22/what-is-the-most-racist-city-in-america/

I thoroughly disagree with this since I think it is more classism and elitism than racism, but others disagree. It is ingrained in people's minds that Boston is racist (by many who live there and many who do not) and so there isn't any surprise that they'd jump to the conclusion that Boston police officers were being racist.

Well what the press calls "news" is always a little off.

Why is the president involved? Because he's the mans friend and was asked a question. :dunno:

If the professor would have just shown the officer ID instead of assuming the officer knew who he was and where he lives this would not be a big deal. Once again some thinks they are above everyone else.

Terrible comparisons.
Those people are US celebrities and many people are interested in them
Thats why it makes the news.
And what should we expect from A president?
Maybe side with law enforcement? Or at least give no comment until they know what really happened (or in obamas case , decide to know what really happened).

Ok so your a cop and you respond to a possible break in.
you see a guy inside who matches the vague description you have recieved.
He tells you "go away you racist white cop".
What do you do? Just leave?

Oh and I forgot, Boston is full of racist white people, thanks for reminding me.

Any WHITE person in a black person's eye site is considered racist. If you want to see real racist go to Kosovo and look at the ethnic cleanising that is still going on.

I guess you didn't read where Gates gave him his school ID?:dunno:

But the officer still insisted on harassing a 5'7, 150lb, 60 year old greying man ,who is walking on a cane, by calling the Harvard police to come over even after he has given his ID & continuing to question Gates as if though he couldn't possibly belong there.

Obama was right for saying the officer acted 'stupidly' & the DA also thought the officer's arrest was baseless simply because the Professor asked for his name & allegedly blew off steam in his own home.

Man can't speak his mind in his own home without being arrested? As we all know Cops never lie on police reports
What peace was Gates disturbing in his own home? There were no complaints from neighbors.:dunno:

I only vaguely heard about this.Actually saw in a link here to another story a pic of him after being arrested at the BBC website and recognized him instantly, wouldn't have remembered his name but would have known that face.He is someone very well known (must have made dozens of appearances on national TV in the US).Guess the cop don't watch serious TV with harvard historians talking.American Idol and 24 probably more his speed.:dunno::D

He seems like a Spike TV kind of guy:D

I have seen Gates in countless places & was really fascinated by his 'Wonders of The Afrcan World' documentary.

As a poster who values your opinion could you read up on the incident (there are various online articles) & tell us what you think.
Arrest of a 60- year- old hobbled man was unneccessary to say the least.

Dude...read the articles before you post.

He refused to give his ID at first saying "Why? Because I'm a black man?" and then called the cop racist. All of that was before he produced any ID.

The neighbors did complain. It was the frikin' neighbor who called the cops saying someone is breaking into the house next door.

If Gates indeed provided his I.D., then yes, these are stupid cops. Goes without saying, I would think. :dunno:

I don't know much about this story. But I know I've had to break into my houses on various occasions. I actually had to take part of my door apart the last time - and I thought this place was burglar proof! But if a cop had shown up, once I provided my I.D., I'd expect him to carry his ass off my property toot sweet.

Not all cops are dumbasses or assholes. I have a few law enforcement people in my family. Some are cool. Some are on a power trip. It's the ones who got their asses kicked as little kids or teenagers who usually get on the power trip, and go on to do the absolute dumbest things imaginable. IMO, most cops are just people trying to do a tough job. But you'll always have Cartman types attracted to a job where someone gets to be a big man with a gun & a stick: "You will respect my au_thoritiiiiiie!!!!!"
