Alright, all that's left is the end of the Ducks/Oilers game, and nothing of consequence is going to happen in that game, so here are my year-end predictions:
Western Conference:
San Jose vs. Colorado - San Jose in 5 games. I wonder whether Peter Mueller will be healthy or not to start the playoffs because he was on a monstrous tear before he got injured. Either way, I don't think the Avalanche have the firepower or the experience to keep up with the Sharks, as bad a playoff team as they are.
Chicago vs. Nashville - Chicago in 5 games. I don't see Niemi playing that well in the postseason, but the Predators are probably the least skilled team in the playoffs.
Vancouver vs. Los Angeles - Los Angeles in 7 games. Luongo has not been good at all leading into the postseason (although he played pretty well against a mightily struggling Flames team yesterday). The Sedins are sick, Kesler and Burrows are awesome, but their defence is very shaky right now and the amount of goals they allowed the last several games of the season reflect that.
Phoenix vs. Detroit - Detroit in 6 games. I would've said a Detroit sweep, but Bryzgalov is so good he'll probably steal a game or two. Detroit is one of the best teams in the league right now, and if it weren't for a poor start and injuries, they would've probably gone in as the fourth seed or maybe won their division. Now that they're healthy, I see them as the best in the West for sure. If Jimmy Howard continues to play as well as he has, that is, as this will be his first playoff experience.
Eastern Conference:
Washington vs. Montreal - Washington in 4 games. The Canadiens are nowhere near capable of competing with the Capitals. Halak's good, but he isn't that good, so he'll probably get scored on quite a bit.
New Jersey vs. Philadelphia - New Jersey in 6 games. Philadelphia played very well against the Devils this year (5-1-0), but they have major goaltending issues and haven't played too well leading into the playoffs.
Buffalo vs. Boston - Buffalo in 4 games. Boston doesn't have what it takes to score on Ryan Miller too many times, I don't think (unless they're shorthanded, in which case they'll score three).
Pittsburgh vs. Ottawa - Pittsburgh in 5 games. It's too bad the Senators have to face the Penguins in the first round and not the Devils, which is what I was hoping for, because they really don't have a team that can compete with the firepower and savvy of the Penguins.
Second Round:
Western Conference:
San Jose vs. Los Angeles - San Jose in 6 games. I still think San Jose is a bad playoff team, but they're still loaded with talent, and I don't think the Kings have enough to overcome it.
Chicago vs. Detroit - Detroit in 7 games. I will love it if these teams meet. Two original six teams in the same division. It would be a great series too, but the Red Wings have major playoff experience and, in my opinion, an advantage in net.
Eastern Conference:
Washington vs. Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh in 7 games. These two teams match up pretty well offensively, an edge to the Capitals, but on defence and goaltending, the Penguins way outrank the Capitals. The Capitals have no good defensive defencemen, and unless Theodore plays like he did with Montreal back when he won the Hart Trophy, they aren't going to be able to stop the goals from coming. The Penguins have stepped it up in the playoffs time and again the last two postseasons, and they'll have to again to beat the Capitals again.
New Jersey vs. Buffalo - Buffalo in 6 games. Ryan Miller. Need I say more?
Western Conference Finals:
San Jose vs. Detroit - Detroit in 6 games. The Sharks might be a little bit more talented, but it's only a little bit, and Nabokov has a history of failing to step up in the postseason, as do all the Sharks for that matter. This is where their talent won't be enough to get them through. The Red Wings are an awesome team and they have a plethora of playoff experience.
Eastern Conference Finals:
Buffalo vs. Pittsburgh - Buffalo in 7 games. Ryan Miller. I will say more, because if this happens, it will be an epic series, I think. Miller will probably have to face 40+ shots a game and be AMAZING in order to win this series. Timely goals from Jochen Hecht too.
Stanley Cup Finals:
Detroit vs. Buffalo - Buffalo in 7 games. Ryan Miller. He's that good. Does anyone know how home-ice advantage would work in this scenario? Because Detroit finished with more points, but Buffalo won their division, I would assume Detroit would get the advantage, but I'm not sure.
Now, what I would like to see happen would be a Vancouver vs. Ottawa Cup Finals with Ottawa winning it all.
Hart Trophy - Ryan Miller (Buffalo).
Vezina Trophy - Ryan Miller (Buffalo).
Calder Trophy - Tyler Myers (Buffalo). (although I think it should be Jimmy Howard)
Norris Trophy - Duncan Keith (Chicago).
Jack Adams Award - Dave Tippett (Phoenix).
Conn Smythe Trophy - Ryan Miller (Buffalo).
